WHKY News reports Granite Falls police are investigating the rape of an 83 year old resident of a local nursing home which occurred Sunday or Monday. This is disgusting! I hope they catch the guy. Nothing upsets me more than abuse of the elderly, children or animals.

Why do nursing homes let themself get understaffed or staffed by unqualified people? Is there a good nursing home anywhere? Did no one "back then" plan for their older days so they would not have to go to a "nursing home"? What is the problem with the older than me generation that there is always so many problems with their care?

jackson; it happened at brockford, people need to get a list of her aligations and her fines she has had to pay just to keep her door's open since jan 2008 and they would re think that decision of placing a loved one in her hands.

from my understanding it was a resident whom lived there and was left alone to roam the halls of a locked unit, while staff stood out side smoking, the lady has been taken to the hosppitol and it is confirmed it was a resident who should not have been on her hall to begain with.I have heard horror stories of that place.no way i would place my family down there.that mrs barlow should have to be a resident in one of these places and let her get treated like she treats her residents and staff I had a cousin there app 3 years or so ago and we could not even keep clothing for him,it was alway's lost or stolen.and i believe this is the same place where the resident left app a month ago and was gone 6 hrs before staff realized it.

Uh, Brockford Inn is ASSISTED LIVING home, hence they should not have a locked unit, I don't know of any assisted living homes that do. Camelot, on the other hand, is skilled nursing, and I know for a fact that they do not have a locked unit. The only ones I know that have locked units in the area, and are skilled nursing facilities are Conover Rehab and the main Lutheran home on Springs road in Hickory.

fuzzy wuzzy, speak for yourself, b/c if you have ever worked or know someone who has worked in a nursing home, they are severely understaffed, and the employees are worked ragged to try and care for all the resident's needs--

I think Shaire Center has a locked unit for their patients with dementia who might wander off.
Are they sure this was a rape or was it an assault on the lady? My only remark is what is this world coming to, there are a lot of sicko people out there?

When I worked for the Shaire center back in 2001, they had the skilled nursing side, 60 residents, and the assisted living side, 60 residents. They did not have a locked unit then. They may have changed it since then, but I don't think so...

Are you blaming the woman that got raped for not planning, years ago, not to have to go into a nursing home?
I plan on going into a nursing home when I am too old to care for myself, as to not be a burden on my children, who have a life of their own.

These places are understaffed and have unqualified people because these jobs SUCK. The pay SUCKS. The work they have to do SUCKS, the benefits SUCK, the hours SUCK, they work all the holidays and people get burnt out on these type jobs quickly. I'm sure people will say well, find another job- but it isnt always that easy. From my understanding- alot of these places are'nt even getting cost of living increases anymore- therefor- the pay sucks even worse.

Oh, now I think I know what ol' fuzzy wuzzy was talking about locked units. Yes, the majority of the nursing homes do have a security system in place to try and prevent residents from wandering. A person has to know the code to hit on the keypad to get in and out. Many times those systems fails because well meaning visitors, not knowing that an elderly person is a resident, might let them out erroneously. I have seen it happen a few times, or the resident is not confused enough to be able to decipher bthe code to get out, because they watch people entering the codes in the keypad. Some staff members give the code to regular visitors and family members, and code becomes well known. I worked in one nursing home where they would change the code once a month. True, it was a pain in the ass to the staff members, having to remember new codes all the time, but it must be instituted to try to ensure each and every resident's safety.

fuzzy wuzzy, if you want to retain that warm, fuzzy feeling inside, I behoove you to take action. Start writing Congress about your concerns, and don't forget to include how poorly all the employees of the nursing homes are treated, overworked and underpaid. They do have to be qualified in order to work, they have to submit to background checks, and it is true that maybe someone sometimes falls through the cracks.

You're probably one of those fools who calls Raleigh at least once a week to complain about frivolous stupidity, like not having preferential care to your loved one. If you feel that way, you should take your loved one out of the said home, take them home and take care of them yourself, and see how hard that is taking care of that one person, let alone many. Or scrape up some money to hire a private sitter, that you have scrutinized yourself.

Oh, and BTW, Camelot does have security cameras all over the place.

They have a specialized unit now for alzheimer's residents. They just developed it a few years ago. I think they are the only nursing home around here that currently has one, but I don't know if it's locked or not (would make sense if it was though)

No, I'm not blaming her, but things like this should make people stop and think that they cannot depend on "nursing homes" where things like this happen. There are probably very good homes, but they are probably very expensive.

I believe the "nursing homes" get good pay for keeping these people. Why don't they pay more and hire more people so that the job will get done? If an owner of a home can Pay OFF the State in fines, why can't they pay better wages? Is it a fact that they could, but won't?

brockford inn has 300 hall locked down and uses it as dementia hall. shaire center has b hall locked as well for dementia residents, brockford is an assisted living /mental/altimers ward she dont care who or what she takes in.
her motto is if you get a check and can pay 1200.00 month to stay here then she will put a number on you and roll you in a bed, she goes for weeks at a time without ordering diapers/depends/etc and staff and family buy soap there is mold in the shower on 200 hall so thick it want come off,she tells dss that her whirlpool works.it has not worked in 5 year's.so residents bottoms have to be loaded down with cremes because they are so red and iritated from one soaked diaper a day.that ole woman will have a hard old life for the way she has treated her residents, but for those of you wondering? she takes in homeless, mental illness pts straight from frye south and broughton, and she takes in assisted living,as well as dementia residents and mixes all these poor people up on these halls .that are rarely checked because she want pay staff, so yes the pay sux,the place sux and the owner definitly has no compassion for your loved ones, they are a number and a pay check for her.she buys old food from salvage stores instead of buying real food, check her out at dss,im sure he has a big long list on BROCKFORD INN, they also will hire anything that walks in off the street, go see for yourselves!this is how the elderly lady was asaulted she had her on a hall with a mental resident.

the staff is over worked and underpaid! and she could care less about your loved ones they are a pay check to her.call dss ask for mike phoenix and ask him for the number or web sight to check on aligations from just brockford inn alone since april of 2007 to now she has had well over 75 cases app 45 were found to be true, and she paid 100.000 fine in feb 2008,she paid a big law suit just a few months back for alady who 3rd shift took out to smoke at 1 am forgot about her.she had diabeties and she was found near dead they called ems she had a double dose of insulin because they asumed that was all that was wrong with her, however ems reported to dss a body temp of minus 80 upon arival she had almost frozen to death in jan of this yr,family sued and won, then feb 2008 a man walks off makes his way to the bank, draws out money gets a ride to florida suffers a stroke while on the bus,ms barlow refused to help the family get him back home when it was her staff who did'nt notice him gone until several hour's had passed, may 2008 resident whom has a stroke cant speak found in whitnel in a hover round ,been gone more than 4 hrs no one knew he was gone, just last month man walks to lenoir gone 6 hrs before reported missing! now do i need to go on? or do you want to check this out for your self, that place is nasty under staffed and run down, your loved one is a pay check to this old woman who lives in a mansion.staff all to often buy's soap/shampoo/lotions/etc just so the residents can be clean!

better yet if you know someone who works for granite or lenoir ems just ask them the conditions they come and finf residents in and carry them out to the hospitol near dead because they have been given the wrong meds or too much ot to less insulin. just ask around my story will check out and it is the truth.we went from dec to jan with no diapers depends etc we were using one depend and doubling up sheets at night to try and keep them dry,all day they sat with a torn pull up between there legs on a pad, want proof call gentiva ask them or again call for the number to check out her aligations, and reports.they ate vanilla wafers for snack for almost three months solid because she bought stale ones from a salvage store, and this is what they ate for snack every single day and night same orange wafers same stale wafers and limonade without sugar,
