Research indicates that Caldwell has rich deposits of gold. Why do we not hear of any being found?

Gold has been found in Caldwell several times but mainly in the early part of the 1800s. In fact there were several mines and even an attempt to dredge lower creek when gold dust was found in it according to some Caldwell county history. North Carolina had the nations largest gold deposits prior to the California gold strike of 1849. Most all gold mining was done in NC prior to that but then it was forgotten about after California hit it big. Emeralds are another big thing that was found in NC. I think the most ever found in one place in the world is Alexander County.
