Who remembers when people use to street race all down 321

I remember in the early 90's when people raced this side of the I-40 bridge down by Melton Hill. There was an area where you could park and watch the race. The road is still there but trees have grown up to block the view. I used to have some good races at the Eaton crossroads stoplight heading towards Melton Hill. I took out a GTA TA, Monte Carlo with an LT1 and 5.0 coupe through there. The coupe missed a gear and got me the second time. I was running a 90 GT at the time with exhaust, basic bolt ons, and a 3.73 gear. I also got into the scariest street race of my life on the other side of the dam close to the rock quarry heading towards LC. Running wide open against an early 80's body(damn sure wasn't running the 305 those cars came with) El Camino. Crested the hill and Hwy Patrol was in the medium shooting me doing approx 110 mph with the bowtie back 4 cars in the other lane. I didn't lift until I approached the curve where you take the hill that goes past the second way into Friendsville. The Camino did. He got nailed and I hid out in Friendsville to avoid the Motorolla. Back then (Spring 92) there was no Pellissippi Pkwy so I had to sneak back onto 321 later. I still had Blount Co. zip up on me just before Regas West but I had broken contact so all he could do was run my plate and follow to the DQ where he turned and went home. I didn't drive that car in Blount county for months after that. Luckily I had an 86 IROC that took over while the 5 liter stayed in the garage. : )

Darn I like this thread. Just remembered trying to watch a race out by the dam during the same time. We couldn't seem to get the contestants together. I wound up down 11 between Loudon and Sweetwater getting pulled over with 5 or six other cars. Here are these guys obviously driving fast cars at 2:30 am and popo can't find anything to keep us on. I only remember a pretty black GT 5.0 that belonged to a guy named Reuben and a nasty Chevy II Nova (maybe a 64) running a strip gear. The fastest street car back then was probably Henry Bluford's 5.0 coupe. Seems like Lyn Gurley built that car in Knoxville at Gurkey's Performance. That period from 87-93 was a really cool time to have a V8 mustang. They were cheap, quick, and most importantly there was an aftermarket to take them to the next level and beyond. The mass air made mods so much easier after 89.

I remember racing coming out of oak ridge. Starting line at the bridge that goes back to lenoir city. Racing down gallaher rd before it got 4 laned. Going about time the cops had shift change. Trying out the new asphalt when they built the new elementary school. Guy standing in the new turn lane which was the finish line with a video camera. No doubt about 2am on a Saturday night lol. Stopping at old exxon tallking up a race before going to ferry bridge to pull off a quick race before cops showed up. Lol.

Martel stright was the best place to race around 1:00 AM.
