My child is in middle school band and is contemplating high school band. However, I have not heard very good things about the band director there. I am thinking of letting him attend Butler County while living with his father as I understand they have a great director there. Can anyone help me out?

I/we personally think he stinks pretty badly! He doesnt support the students and leads more on the fear of upsetting the upper classman rather than rewarding the best students. Our son was in band last year and stayed frustrated at him all year long. He is a nice man but as far as pusing the students to better themselves, it doesnt happen.

My daughter was in the grayson county band. She loved it till Keys got there. Then she just quit.It was her Junior year. She couldnt deal with him.Treated the students like little kids not semi-adults.I would choose Butler County if I was you.I do not know much about Butler County though.Good Luck on your decision.

I am in the band and it was much better before Mr Keys got here. Opie is right. It is frustrating all of the time because upper classman get everything and many times dont deserve it. One of them is even a punk and a bully and Mr Keys knows this and does nothing about it. Sure glad he leaves next year. The hardest workers are not given a fair chance nor are they made to feel a part. I can see why your daughter quit. A friend of mine was in the Cougar band and has moved to Butler County and does state a huge difference in the two directors. He loves it there. Hope this helps.

you all are stupid. Keys is the best person ever. He doesn't treat students bad at all. I've had him in class, and he has helped me out with a bunch of stuff. You all need to get your facts straight before you start talking crap about people

Hey Yup! he is different as a teacher in class than he is as the Band director! I didnt say he was bad, just not the best. Did you know he didnt even go and support his band students that went to state? He made them find their own way as well as pay their own way there! Now tell me how that is the best person ever? That is like the football coach making the team go to state and then he stays home and gives them no support! I'll bet the other directors were there with their students!

Yes, this is the actual truth. My child is in the band and stays frustrated at Mr Keys all of the time. As an undergraduate that works so very hard at being her best, she then goes to band only to find Mr Keys refusing to have chair competitions that would place the upper classman at a lower level where they belong. He is so afraid of upsetting a nondeserving student that he overlooks the deserving ones because of their grade level. It is also the truth that he didnt take/go with his 3 students that went to state competition this past weekend. I am also told he didnt even tell them in person good job or congradulations for a job well done. I suspect it is because they are underclassman.
So I realize this is long way to answer your ??(Just Curious) however, I would never tell a parent to have a child go and live with the other parent only for band; but I would at least suggest to meet with both directors personally before making your decision. Hope this helps....good luck

"Band Parent"she then goes to band only to find Mr Keys refusing to have chair competitions that would place the upper classman at a lower level where they belong.

1.The reason we dont do chair challenges yet is because NOT EVERYONE IS ABLE TO DO BAND ALL YEAR so we wait until the chair auditions would make a difference before doing them (aka spring semester)
2.He did congradulate the three students that made the all state band (2 seniors and 1 sophomore) in person, on facebook, and at the christmas concert and he couldnt pay for them getting there because it's STUPID to get a bus (which WE have to pay A LOT for) for three students, plus i know for a fact we did pay for registration for all three students
And to just wondering- the band director should not influence your choice of the band your child joins, the actual band members should be the main reason
We would love to have your child in the GCHS band next year
(ps to everybody) the only things upperclassmen get to do is be section leaders(because they know what they are doing and how to teach it) and collect/give out trophies at the contests(it's their last marching season and they've worked for 4-5 years for this band so they deserve it)
Mr. Keys is a wonderful band director, he works us as hard as he thinks we can handle (most people could handle more but there are certain lazy people in the band that gripe and complain when asked to actually work hard)

I like Mr. Keys just fine. I will agree that we haven't done as well since he started, but it's not because of what HE does, it's mainly due to the recent competition rule changes that put GCHS
Band at a disadvantage. Please, don't be hatin on Mr. Keys, he's a great guy.

I was in Band when Mr. Keys started and let me tell you I really didnt like him..he does pick favorites and most upperclassmen that he just lets be section leader(s) dont know what the hell to do..I will agree that some underclassmen should be section leader cause they work harder and practice more than the upperclassmen. Most of the upperclassmen arent worried about band, just getting into college. I think Mr. Keys is an alright guy but not the nicest and I felt that he really didnt care about our school at all

I dont know much about the chair placement information discussed here, but as a father of one of the students that went to state, I am fully aware of some of the other facts. Myself was to be out of town and her mother was scheduled to work on the day of the State competition. My daughter approached Mr Keys requesting if he would be able to take the students, otherwise she would be unable to compete....."oh well!" was his response to her. She was so very disappointed and frustrated with him. So WHAT the band cant afford a bus, he does have a vehicle and could have taken them as a way to support them in this big event.
I canceled my trip and did not leave town in order to take her so she could compete.
Furthermore, the band did not cover their entry fees like they did for the regional competition as she paid her own way for it.
And as for the personal congrats to her from him....didnt happen either. Yes at the concert in front of everyone, but not on a personal face to face basis. This also disappointed her.
My Keys is a very nice gentleman and is easily approachable at any time. I do truly beleive that he cares about the students, and we cannot expect anyone to be perfect.
I agree in that the decision for band shouldnt be solely based upon the director, however, I do wish you the best on your decision. We support the Cougar Band in more than one way, boosters etc and suspect you will one day do so as well.
Happy Holidays to all!

Did you consider that it's not feasible for a male band director to take a small group of students (at least one female, according to above posts) on a trip like that? Do you know how easily he could lose his job/career if someone suggested that anything inappropriate happened?

Yes, it would be great if they felt like he supported them enough, but you can't really expect him to personally provide transportation to an optional event like that.

To each their own, but my son is not an upperclassman and Mr. Keys treats him wonderfully and with the upmost respect!!! My son admires Mr. Keys. Furthermore Mr. Keys has been very encouraging to my son and we would not trade him for any other band director in the world!!!

GOOOOOOOOOOooooOOOoooo Mr. Keys, U ROCK!

If you are taking advice over your childs future from this website maybe you should go to Butler Co. It would seem that if you have any questions about the band or problems with what Mr. Keys does you should address it with him. He has always had an open door policy with me and has always tried to answer my with all honesty. Sometimes the answer is not what I want to hear, but that is part of it.

As far as the quality of the band; there has never been a great band at Grayson Co. The have been some that have been OK. I think some of us have pride in being a part of the band in the past with it being good. We may have fond memories of the bands we were in in the past, we may have fond memories of the directors we had, we may still laugh about the things that happened. That does not mean it was "good". It just was.

Once again, if you got problems talk to Mr. Keys. If you got problems show up to the booster meetings. And don't believe everything your kids say. They (like their parents) usually hear what they want to hear not what was said.

Have a great Christmas.

Keys lacks a lot of knowledge when it comes to being head director. He has plenty of assistant years. But its a different ball game dealing with this type of program he has in front of him in GC, not a great group of kids to work with as far as excellence goes, whether it be concert or marching band. They lack passion, keys cant create that for them, but he has a voice and a brain so he is capable of motivating them, he just doesnt go about it the right way. Its just one of those things that will take him another 3-4 years before things start to be clockwork and start to come together where it needs to. Goodluck gchs band you guys work hard. Ive been there and put the time and effort in. Its a great experience, never give up on what you do, music is a beautiful talent to have on your side, dont waste it.

Your band director must be a good motivator,be devoted, and willing to work as hard as the students toward building a reputable band. This jerk-off is none of the above. And to you Dazed and Confused there certainly have been some great bands. Check back at the bands acomplishments under Mr.Ashby.They were known and feared at all competitions region and statewide.
