So,they refuse to use Martin Luther King Day as a makeup day for our kids in school, but they will gladly take away Presidents Day! Let me get this straight, we are forced to celebrate a day strictly because a man is African American, but our kids can't celebrate the founding Fathers of this nation? Oh, I forgot, our Constitution now means nothing to Obama, but the color of someone skin sure does. I am in no way racist, but I find that this is a racist day made by our nation and an ignorant decision made by our school board. RIDICULOUS...we NEVER missed school for MLK Jr. day when I was a kid!

Better point to me is why is school not scheduled on either of those days to begin with? It's not like they are major Federal holidays like Memorial Day, etc. Plus, we know there is going to be bad weather around those times anyway.

I certainly agree with you! Instead of taking MLK Jr. and Presidents day both, they choose to take away part of CHRISTmas break and summer break. DO they not plan ahead when making schedules for such snow days? They know it will snow, and school will be missed. Why not allow so many days for these snow days from the beginning...if they are not used then school can get out earlier instead of in mid June!
State Law

It's state law in Kentucky that public schools are not in session on MLK Day. There is no such law either way about Presidents' Day, so any local school district can go or not that day.

I was wondering when some of the very intelligent, tactful, tolerant Grayson County residents were going to start up this particular conversation.

I believe this was a state law long before Barack Obama ever took office. Although I'm not particularly impressed with EVERYTHING the guy's done, I fine it very interesting how every problem that crops up or everything people are dissatisfied with in their lives somehow becomes Obama's fault. How is that? Perhaps someone could enlighten me...

Presidents day was created to celebrate George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. It's not a catch-all to celebrate every US president ever. MLK Day is not really a celebration about a person more than a civil rights movement, although it is traditionally centered around that person. Perhaps that will help explain the law. I don't claim that it makes a whole lot of sense but it does make some.

As for "CHRISTmas".. Come on people. You do realize that Christmas was origionally a pagan holiday that Christians took over to bolster their numbers and try to push out the paganism, right?

Powers to be declared if schools are in session MLK Day they would loose federal funding. I think this is a nationwide law. I agree the same respect should be given to President's Day.

Why Obama? It was the same with the presidents before him. I agree kids should get presidents day off from school but Obama didn't do it.

It's all about money. The kids have to make up way to many days. Fall break, spring break, holidays. It's so F'ing stupid. I hate our government and the way it runs our school system.

Our two local newspapers are about as dependable as this topix website. You can't really believe anything in either one. By the way, there is school in Grayson County on Presidents Day...believe it or not.

MAYBE ONE OF YOU THAT IS SAYING THAT IT IS A KY STATE LAW THAT SCHOOL IS NOT IN SESSION ON MLK DAY!!! i HAVE SEARCHED THE INTERNET AND KY STATE LAW PENAL CODES AND CAN'T FIND ANYWHERE THAT SHOWS THAT IT'S A LAW THAT SCHOOL IS NOT IN SESSION. I DID FIND THAT THERE WAS A LAW PASSED MAKING THE DAY AN OBSERVED HOLIDAY BUT NOTHING THAT SAYS SCHOOLS HAVE TO CLOSE. CAN ANYONE CLARIFY THIS OR WAS THAT JUST ANOTHER COMMENT WHERE SOMEONE HAD A CASE OF THE BULLSH**?

I HAVE NEVER BEEN RACIST BUT I THINK THIS IS A BUNCH OF BS. I GET THAT BLACK PEOPLE WANT TO OBSERVE THIS HOLIDAY AND THAT MLK WAS A GOOD AND DECENT MAN BUT LET'S BE HONEST HERE. IF THE KIDS HAVE A LOT OF SNOW DAYS AND NEED TO MAKE UP DAYS IT'S POLICY THAT THE NEXT OBSERVED HOLIDAY BE TAKEN AND SCHOOL BE IN SESSION SO WHY SHOULD IT BE DIFFERENT FOR MLK DAY? I DONT THINK THIS HOLIDAY IS ANY MORE SPECIAL THAN PRESIDENTS DAY OR ANY OTHER OBSERVED HOLIDAY THAT THEY TAKE FROM THE KIDS AND MAKE THEM GO TO SCHOOL IN AN EFFORT TO GIVE THEM WHAT LITTLE BIT OF SUMMER VACATION THAT THEY GET. I AM ALL FOR EQUALITY NO MATTER WHAT THE SKIN COLOR BUT THS DOESN'T SEEM LIKE EQUALITY TO ME. IT SEEMS TO ME THAT THIS COUNTRY IS PLAYING FAVORITES. DOESN'T REALLY SEEM LIKE BLACK PEOPLE ARE HAPPY WITH EQUALITY THEY WANT TO BE TREATED AS THOUGH THEY ARE TOO SPECIAL TO GIVE UP THIS HOLIDAY WTF!!! YES ITS A SPECIAL DAY FOR THE AFRICAN AMERICAN RACE BUT THEN WHO IS MAKING BIG DEAL ABOUT RACE? SEEMS LIKE ITS THE BLACK PEOPLE WANT A LITTLE MORE THAN EQUALITY, SPECIAL TREATMENT IS NOT EQUALITY!!!!

Try looking in the federal laws or on the kentucky department of education. I do remember one time we had school on that day--one of few counties--and the county got chewed out. Perhaps you need to call the Board and ask them.
