We recently moved here several months ago. Has this town and state always been so closed off to outsiders? What is with all the different churches, do people start fighting and go an open up a new church? Why do the local business's seem to gouge the military when so many are owned by ex-military, even the big stores, wal-mart and lowes have different pricing than other areas? Is everyone here "kin" to each other? My husband and I love it here even though Leesville seems so far behind the times. Something just appears a little off in a "Stepford" kind of way. Suggestions are answers anyone? Did we move to the twilight zone of corrupt law and government?

That's a pretty substantial allegation to make. Can you back it up with proof and/or examples? Do you know of specific instances where military personnel are charged more than civilians are charged for the same thing? It would seem to me that if the military is being gouged, then we all are being gouged, since we all shop at the same places. As for WalMart and Lowe's having different pricing than other areas, I'd love to have an example or two of that, also. I imagine that, for the most part, Lowe's and WalMart's pricing is dictated by corporate headquarters. After all, WalMart didn't become the largest retailer in the history of the world by letting each local manager set his own prices!

now now B it was a good question and from the way the news is and whats going on people are going to look at that way and yes you know that there are some stores that don't like the military or more like don't go out of thier way like they do for locals i see it a lot.

for the most part yes this state is very closed off even thought it does not say it is but look at the way this state is treated by the Fed's and that is why.

As far as Wal Mart and Lowers its not the prices its the people who work there some are very feirndly while others are just don't give a shit i got a job and thats it.

It's funny the ex military that own stores here sometime do look down on soliders but for the most part it is rare, I know that when I moved back to Leesville I was treated like military trash until I told one person in Wal-Mart who I was and who my family was and they changed the way I was talked to then I just stop going to the place and it has closed due to lack of customers.

As far as the Churchs I see the same thing there are a lot of good churches around here you will just have to look I stay out of th big ones as there is to much gosup in them and I go to church for a message not who is screwing who in town or passing keys around(inside joke).

Could say more but would bring the meaness out of some if I did lol

And I would be tagged as talking about the grandfathers again (inside joke again)

dear seaman, you moved to a state known for crazy politics and maybe a little closed off(research david duke and edwin edwards) my family was accepted quite nicely when we moved here by most, but every now and then it shows a little. There is a whole bunches of churches and i would be safe to assume some have been started out of ......disagreements with others (we will call it that). the "gouging" you refer to needs an example. lets say wal-mart or lowes sells plants.... a fifeteen gallon live oak is 169 dollars, i know a place that sells them everyday for 55 eight miles from leesville, so yes i believe on some things (plants) you might be being gouged. can't speak for other businesses. yes, everyone here is "kin" that is from here, those that aren't are "kin" where they are from. yes, leesville is behind times and my new stepford wife comes with a remote. you have sucessfully moved to the "twilight zone" but most of the law is not corrupt and the government will always be ....... shall we say stinky?

it may just be me but i thought seaman would be a man, are am i talking to a gay couple..... my apology if i assumed wrong.

Sea Man-
Being a military transplant myself I can understand where you are coming from but I can also tell you that the positives of this town far outweigh the negatives. Yes, this is a very close and tight knit community but once they get to know you, you are family even if they don't particularly like you and they never turn away a stranger in need.
As for the price gouging, I have to disagree there. In fact, local rates for good and services here are generally lower than in most city areas. I konw because I have worked in the community and compared with cities like Lake Charles and Alexandria.
Regarding the churches in town, yes there are a lot of chruches but that's because this is a very spirtual and faith driven community. Even the bar hoppers on Saturday are usually in church on Sunday. Take from that what you will, but it's the way Leesville has worked for a while and the Earth hasn't opened up and swallowed it yet.
Finally, the disagreements here are vocal and direct because that's how we do it here. We get to the point fast and say what we mean. Ask BEMBH and IPLO- we don't agree on much except that we each have the right to say what we will when we like. Coming from a big city background, I have found living in Leesville a blessing and I hope you do too.

Welcome to Topix and Leesville. Feel free to jump right in and get involved. Oh, and bring your helmet and pads- it can get a little rough in here ;-)

I will try to respond to all post later. To busy laughing right now and have to take care of the little SEA-MANS. I am not offended by the jokes (Troyanacoco) and do need some trees.

Rkeeton, thank you for the caring response. Miss the city life too! The church thing is obvious.

Bemhb, I stick by my words. The military here as well as other bases, appears to suffer from the effects of guaranteed stable monthly income phobia.

Hope to hear from others.

Your just gonna have to except the fact that the sole survival of leesville is based on fort polk, and military men and women get a constant paycheck bi monthly, so it's not so hard to believe that were going to take your money, it's a fact of life. I don't know you so I'm going to use you, and cut my friends and family a break our income is far less than yours so it's you who will make up the difference in the prices. That my friend is small town economics 101

No prob and its good to see you have a healthy sense of humor. You'll need it in here lol

Troy and IPLO crack me up all the time and I think Troy is right: we should have a big Tpoix cook out and we'll all wear silly masks to "preserve our annonimity (sp?)

I will wear my Boba Fett helmet (Yes, I am THAT much of a geek.) I would wearmy Darth Vader one but then you all would accuse me of being Mayor Rose :P

SEA-MAN, read all the posts on Topix concerning the civil service board, and your question, "How corrupt is Leesville?" will answer itself.

And it seems to be getting more corrupt by the day....

let us get going out here at the nursery and say about........end of june, first part of july and the nursery will have a topix party. we will supply the eats and drinks and i can probably get a cajun friend of mine from down south to play his accordian with his buddies. i don't drink, not from lack of trying, but everyone i know does so hope yall would be okay with that. can't wait to turn seaman loose, it will be fun to see seaman on the dance floor. i am not a good dancer so i hope i dont get seaman on my foot.

seaman,i do think hero of war is pretty close on the small town economics. pretty much why we dont follow those guidelines, but the only way to know for sure is come out are call and see if we are different.

rkeeton, if you wear darth vader i'll wear a nurses costume (for 1 hour) and put pictures on topix. i am sure this would get people together for a topix party!
