Looking to catch a mess of bluegill and other sunfish.

I have access to a couple of secluded spots on Anacoco creek.

Where are some other good areas to catch em' from the bank?

You can catch a bunch of pan-fish at Alligator Lake with small pieces of hot dogs.

Wow, I haven't been to that lake in years. I thought it would be fished out.

I thought so too but maybe they go to Catfish Cove since you would have to go through the gates to get there from post.

Sorry! I even catch a bass sometimes. I use purple and pink pretty lures for the bass and my husband laughs at me.

I would go to toledo bend. the bluegill there are plentiful and they can get pretty big, i prefer to use live worms, brim love them and they stay on the hook longer than crickets and attracts them more than jigs or lures, probably the best way to catch big bull brim is put a cork or bobber on your line and set the depth to about 3-5 feet, ive observed that the bigger ones prefer deeper water away from the schools of their smaller family, another method ive seen used is put bread in the shallow water to better seperate the big ones from the small ones,

Great info, thank you. I'm thinking about hitting the Sabine river where the generators flow. There has to be some big gills in there.

Have you ever been to the Blue Hole? It's just southwest of south fort. It's in the middle of nowhere, and there is this algae in the water that actually makes it look like a tropical oasis, but it used to be infested with snakes. The last time I was there was probably around 2002, but it used to be a hidden gem for my dad and I. We could perch jerk for hours and in between we'd catch a few 3-4 lb catfish and a few decent sized bass we'd throw back. And just to be clear I lump all the pan fish in the same group, so by "perch jerking" I mean we'd catch a nice mix of blue gill, crappie and perch. At least 15 or so a piece just over a couple of 3 hours. I never found too many places that were more fun than the Blue hole for that sort of thing in or around VP except for a few private ponds. It's a lot of fun to take a kid there for an early experience because they'd def catch enough not to be bored. It is beautiful scenery but again, watch your step around that water because on more than a few occasions we had a cotton mouth rob our stringer. This place stayed stocked from 94 to 2002 and most times we'd be the only people there, but I haven't been home in a long time so.......

I have heard of this place! Never could find it though. How do I go about getting there? I'm very familiar with the area.

Man Jimmy it's been so long since I've been there so forgive me if I screw up these directions, but I'll do my best. Pretend you are at that shop rite, right there in Pickering on 171 (or lake chuck HWY), from there go straight up 10(Pitkin HWY). You need to follow it about 5 miles or so until you hit "Lookout Road",(this is about a mile past the Texas Ave intersection and about a half mile or so past where you'd veer south toward Pitkin).... Now from there my memory is absolute fog. I can tell you that if you're doing the speed limit it will take almost 15-20 minutes from that shop rite. Also when you hit lookout road, the Blue hole will be on your left. There is a sign, so if you drive around that general area, I don't think you'll miss it. Back in 2002 it was off limits to military vehicles but there were still some (very few) training exercises going on in that area, it would have been rare to actually see any training happening though. It should still be open to the general public... If you ask anyone that works out there for Cubic or Environmental, I would have to believe they could get you there pretty easily if you just give them this info. I hope this helps you and good luck!
