Your statement is ridiculous. Here is a link with race statistics.

Did you say you work in the correctional system?
Your link doesn't support you. However, this one contradicts you, at least thru ten years ago.

60% of those in prison, probation or parole are white.

I already said why I was concerned. Starving prisoners are MORE DANGEROUS FOR THE GUARDS!!!
... I'm not talking fancy diets, I'm just saying feed them adequately so they don't riot out of desperation.
Nobody is "starving" prisoners. Your very use of the word is ludicrous.

I agree with you CyBear, there are so many convicts who commit crimes just to go back to prison because they can live better in prison... Cable television, drugs, good food, a free gym, and a warm place to lay their heads at night for free, and who pays for all of this? All of us hard working tax payers who work hard to take care of our own families.

im no where near a liberal. im anti abortion, anti gay marriage, i go to church on sunday, and own several guns. im for closed borders, and anti illegal immigrant. now conservatives generally have morals, unlike the liberals. so that being said, i do not believe in putting guards at risk due to not taking care of the human beings that made the mistake of engaging in criminal behavior. you treat a person like an animal, i know from experience that he will act like one. you treat a criminal with respect and give him an education, he just might get rehabilitated, and become a doctor, or lawyer,or garbageman, or he could become a preacher like my pastor...who by the way does not take a dime from the church, rather he works in a book store. yes my pastor spent years locked up and is covered with tatoos and you would probably be put off by his appearance, yet he is a way better man than most of you haters

first of all you know nothing about prison. a tooth brush lid full of weed costs twenty bucks in prison. the food is not good in prison. they actually do not get to watch anything they want in prison, the television is censored. many prisons are not warm, and prison is most definitely not a very safe place to be, i guarantee you very few people are actually trying to get into prison. only the few who have been institutionalized.....a result of our broken "department of corrections", that does not correct anything.

Lest you think that it is brutal murderers, rapists and armed robbers in prison exclusively:

NORA ANDRADE-Nora has been in prison since 1987 for killing her batterer, who had abused her for 13 years.

GENEVIEVE "TOBY" YNINGUEZ-Toby was abused throughout her life, physically, emotionally, and sexually. She faced an abusive relationship for eight years before she killed her abuser. She has been in prison since 1984, and is now a sixty-six year old grandmother.

HENRIETTA BRIONES-Henrietta has been incarcerated since 1987 for a second-degree murder conviction for killing her abuser, who was literally twice her size (Henrietta was 5'2" and 115 pounds, while her abuser was 6'4" and 230 pounds.).

VALERE BOYD-Valere was held at gunpoint by her abuser on July 27, 1985. He threatened to kill her, attempted, and almost succeeded. She was convicted of second-degree murder and was sentenced to 15 years to life plus a two-year enhancement for her use of a firearm.

FLOZELLE WOODMORE-Flozelle pled guilty to second degree murder on May 21, 1987 for the death of her boyfriend Clifton Morrow. During the course of their relationship, Clifton stabbed Flozelle, pushed her down a flight of stairs, forced her to have an abortion, repeatedly beat and threatened to kill her, and emotionally abused her in any way possible. Flozelle has been incarcerated since 1987, when she was only eighteen years old.

Larry Peterson spent more than 17 years in prison for murder and rape before DNA testing led a judge to overturn his conviction.

There are many more stories including juveniles.

Sometimes appearances are deceiving. A little more investigation of the facts before categorizing everyone.

Maybe this kind of treatment is more of what you are asking for?

JACKSON, Miss.(AP)-- Adolescents at two Mississippi training schools have been hogtied, shackled to poles, ordered to exercise at odd hours and forced to eat their own vomit when they get sick from the exertion, a U.S. Department of Justice report says.

Young people aged 10-17 are sent to the training schools after facing repeated charges for property crimes or other offenses. The Justice Department report said 75 percent of girls are committed for status offenses, probation violations or contempt of court. Most boys at Oakley, near Raymond, are in for property offenses, low-level drug possession charges or auto theft charges.

It said boys were sometimes punished by being forced to run around tables for hours with mattresses on their backs.

"Girls are punished in the military field by being forced to run with automobile tires around their bodies or carrying logs," the report said. "Girls reported being forced to eat their own vomit if they throw up from exercising in the hot sun."

Justice Department workers also found unsanitary kitchen conditions at Oakley, including mouse droppings and cockroaches.

From Consistent:

(fools that do not realize that they are "One New Law Away" from being Imprisoned too!!)

You have no idea the reality of that statement.

People need to wake up and see what is really happening.

obviously most of you morons do not know anything about prisons. or the people in them. not all people who are incarcerated tend to act like rabid animals. there are a few that do. yes the inmates are guilty of a crime, however, if you treat them like animals they will all start acting like animals, leading to harm to the prison staff. many people i know who have been to prison are now doing great things. they got educated while in prison, and returned to society. they became counselors, lawyers, doctors, and even my pastor, who now reaches out to homeless people, so that they do not end up back in prison......quit being such haters.
Even though I don't think prison are or should be the life of luxury, I agree with this statement. If you show a prisoner no respect as a human, no matter their crime, they can turn that whole prison into a riot. All it takes is one strong minded one, to convince the others to do it.
I know what it's like on both sides of the fence, I have alot of family in corrections, and I was incarcerated. It's not great in there, but I do think alot get more comforts than they need or deserve. It has been eleven years since i served my time, and i can honestly say, i haven't had so much as a parking ticket since. Fact is, prison will work for some, not for all. I have seen some get released, only to be back in the next week. I asked one woman why , her answer was simply, there was nothing out there( in the real world) for her.

Paul is right, in a prison setting you have people that work there to keep the peace and to protect society. I am one of those people. Without televisions, decent food, educational opportunties and recreation, prisons would be killing grounds. Not inmate on inmate, but inmate on staff. On a typical day I am the overseer of close to two hundred inmates. I am lock in with them. Imagine if these guys are pissed off daily, who would be the one they come after. You guess it, me a husband, father, worker, retired military and college educated.
Weel, me being college educated, has enough brains to know not to work there. But, you should use the equipment given to you if things get out of hand. Taze 'em, beat 'em, kick 'em, I don't care, they are all animals and are there for a reason.

Jail is jail you are there for your punishment it is not to a layed back type of place. I feel that all inmates should at least be responsible for some of there food or work to get it. They are in jail were your freedom is stripped and you have access to nothing. So let them work for it there are plenty of jobs in jail that pays and you will not go hungry. It's jail not paradise!

You're correct, I know nothing about prison, but I do have cousin in the "Pen", who deserves to be there because of a senseless murder he commited, and I also had a very close family member murdered who was shot and robbed coming home from a second job trying to support his family, the person that shot him only received 20 to 40 years, both should have received a sentence of life. You act like these prisoners should be treated with respect and dignity, I don't think so, people are sent to prison to be punished, and if a prison guard is afraid of his or her's environment, then I would suggest another choice of employment.

You are very correct.
Do not lump all people together.

However the thread is about jail. Others did
go off the track and dig deeper into the penal
system.

With your awareness regarding these cases,
one would hope that you are an advocate
towards true justice on any of their cases.

Of course, my guess is that these convicts
are minorities and of poor or no resources
to advance or fund their cases.

Do they not have appeals?

Or are the prosecutors that much better than
the defence?

Money can buy justice or freedom, it seems.

O.J. Simpson comes to mind.

first, i must say i am sorry to hear about the plight of your relatives, however you must have enough sense to know that not everyone in prison is a murderer, rapist, or pedophile. there are many that are in prison for non violent offenses, who can be rehabilitated. i never said that prison should be a nice place. prison should be a punishment, and losing one's freedom is a punishment, i can tell you from my own personal experiences with the department of corrections. today i am a decent law abiding citizen. all i am suggesting is that people are fed a decent meal, and are kept safe from physical harm, and offered programs to better themselves in order to reduce the recidivism rate. these conditions make it better for the guards while the criminals are incarcerated, and safer for us on the outside, because instead of running a gladiator school, they are running a correctional facility, where prisoners get counseling, drug treatment, and education.

As long as Justice can be purchased, and some "Groups" get a pass (see article on Lakeville Mom baby killer), there is no point to discussing the way Humanity treats those we imprison.
When/If the "Justice System" becomes "Just", then a discussion on they way to treat "Criminals" will be useful.

Our system is so bastardized today, that it is inhumane to treat "Criminals" in a way that we wouldnt treat a Pet.
Intentional cruelty is a crime if done to your "Kitty". But some ignorant posters advocate treating fellow human beings worse than an animal!

The truth is that the vast majority of those we imprison dont kill their own children.

Is their a more heinous crime????
