Cheyenne/Reydon Bear football?

Just wondering if anyone has ever considered starting a football team in the Cheyenne/Reydon schools? I know that neither school has ever had football before, but with the number of boys that are there it may be a good thing to try. I know there were 2 full Jr. High basketball teams last year and your baseball teams seem to be full. I think football would bring a lot to your school, maybe even some new students. Just something to consider....

All I know is Mr. Butler said they had the money to do it (build a football field) but for some reason or another it didn't get done. But now I'm hearing the school is broke because of oil fields drying up or something like that.

Well, I know the oilfield slow down is hurting everyone but Duke started its' team totally on donations. They raised like $27,000 in just a very short amount of time. I don't live in Cheyenne but my son may move there if there were a football team. It would be fun to watch a friday night game again! If this is something your son would enjoy I would encourage you to see if it is possible, you never know unless you ask right?

Well, how many boys are willing to go out?

If there are 40 or more, I would say go for it.

Are there younger kids in YAFL or similar? If not, get them in now. If parents are willing to get behind a YAFL league, and support it, and take their kids to those games, the school-board will use that as a level of interest for high school sanctioned (OHSAA) football. If not, I would advise the school-board to pass.

For the first three seasons they could play their home games either at Sayre or Elk City, just play there (at say Sayre for example), when Sayre is playing a road game that Friday.

If, after the conclusion of the third season the interest is still there, and high, then author a bond to build a stadium in Cheyenne. If the parents are willing to author, pass, and fund a bond bill for a stadium, that's what needs to be done. Otherwise I would advise against spending the money.

After all that, if the interest is still there and high, I would ask Everett Dobson for his support.

WARNING: New programs like this usually have a long time of getting their butts kicked, so know upfront that it will be a long hard road, and play for the fun of playing football, not to go to state.

I would love to have played football when I was there, but we didn't have enough enrollment to get them to try it. I think I would have been a good rover/strong safety/corner back in the day....

40? I would say that would be impossible in a town the size of Cheyenne unless you are counting junior high and high school boys. Does Elk City even have 40 boys on their team?

Of course it would take years to get good at the game, they would very likely lose all of their games for at least the first 3 years. Everyone would have to be aware of that for sure. This would be a learning process for all involved.

Maybe the school already owns some land that could be utilized for a field and the shop classes could build some bleachers for a stadium? Just a thought.

Have you ever been to a tryout in Elk City?

"Go out for football" and "Making the team" are two different things.

If Cheyenne/Reydon can't get:

10 seniors
10 juniors
10 sophomores
&
10 freshmen

...who would be willing to try out for the team, then I would say "pass."

If you can't get that level of interest up front, how is it going to look in mid-November?

Even if we are talking about 8-man here, you need 25-solid bodies at the start or it will be hard to finish.

Ideal 11-man roster is at least 2-deep, that is 44. Go ask the Elk City football coach how many boys tried out this year.

So, you had better have 40 enthusiastic bodies on August 1 if you want to field a team. By December 1 you'll be lucky to have 20 healthy ones left that are worth anything. If they can't get 10 from each class, it isn't worth attempting it.

Remember, you have to "build" a program, you have to have 10 (average) from each class, or you'll have 25 seniors and a team that gets injured off the field the following season. The seniors all graduate and then what are you left with?

If you don't have a JV squad, you will be in deep trouble very quickly. So, yes a MINIMUM of 40 who are willing to go out for football. If not, I would tell the school board to say, "no." And, it would be preferable to have 15-per class or 60 total at the August 1 tryouts.

Snyder is about the same size school as Cheyenne/Reydon, how many on their team? 35 kids, and I bet around 50 tried out. So, yes, 40.

Woah... why the hostility?

First off, most of these small towns don't have "try outs" if you are interested and have the desire and grades to play then you are on the team. I am perfectly capeable of reading, I figured anyone who was commenting on this site would realize how these small schools fill their teams. Guess not?

I would imagine a town of Cheyennes size would be an 8 man team, I know they have more kids than in the past but as I said earlier I don't live in Cheyenne or Reydon so I am not sure what their classification or student body count is.

Finally, if no one ever asks the question nothing ever changes. If the numbers are there and the parents are willing to try to get things started then why not try? I do understand that the numbers are the most important factor, I have been around football all of my life and have seen what injuries and graduations can do to a team. I was just asking if anyone thought it would ever be possible, and what is the harm in asking?

Cheyenne would be smart not to start a football team especially an 8 man. Simply because it would be pretty embarrassing to them to lose to Shattuck 97-0. Most people would want to quit the team if that happened and I don't think that they could rebound from that. However if they had just enough to start an class A team they could play Snyder, Cordell, and some of those guys. But definitely do not start class C or even B for that matter. (No offense to Cheyenne or Reydon but I know from past experience, Proud Hobart Bearcat)

I grew up in Cheyenne born and raised there, moved after highschool. I think it would be great to have a football team. Never really understood why they didnt have one. You guys would probably be in Class A, playing Sayre, Cordell, Snyder, Walters, BFDC, Mooreland, Hooker, Minco, Hinton, Apache, Carnegie, Hollis, and Mangum. There are some pretty good teams in class A, you'd have to play 11 man. Would love to see it happen.

As a Grad of 1979 in Cheyenne, I think its a great idea, a town without football in OK is a disgrace, I use to go all the way to tuttle OK to watch them play football a very small town in those days but let me tell you a few years ago they had a heisman winner that played on that little field, and losing is part of winning, let um play they will only be kids once

Now Thrill be nice. There is no sense in this, unless the proper procedure and people are gone through and it is decided to have a football team everyone on here is wasting their breath and energy. Parents in Cheyenne are going to have to be the driving force in this if they want their kids to play football. Until that happens its pointless. Don't wait for things to happen (they won't) Make things happen.
