Ted, Do you remember if Steve Stewart had family in Syracuse? He was released in '66, and continued to write to Linda Fairbanks for a while afterwards. Linda was still there when I left in '67. I know you were in B Bldg by then. Were you in contact with her after you went to B Bldg? Do you know when she was released? I'd love to get in touch with her. I just wish more of our classmates would use this forum.
I know he had family in syracuse.. but after crane hill he went to a foster home in skinnyatlas(not the right spelling but hopefully you get the drift),the only person I kept in touch with when I went to B building was a girl named Debbie carpenter... we used to write letters back and forth...

I remember Debbie. She was your girlfriend for awhile in the beginning of '66. At least she thought so. Debbie could be a bit of a bully. She, Linda, Donna Knapp and I hung out together the summer of '66, then Debbie left later that year. I think Donna did too. That left Linda and me. I made other friends with Barbara Owens and Mary Melphi. When you and Debbie wrote, was she stil at Crane Hill? Do you remember Steve Carey? I had a crush on him that year. Do you know what his story was? Did he have family?

Steve Carey had dark hair and glasses. He had an overbite (buck teeth). He was a skinny kid, and a popular wanna be. You and Steve Stewart were the popular boys. As soon as you left, he managed to get Linda to go steady with him. I guess since she was popular, he thought that would make him popular too.

to dawn thomas. crane hill never was on river rd.
but some time in the 80s are so it was relocated to part of E building from what i was told. there
was also a riot that happened there. cause of mass
mistreatment there. the state police were called in. i got this infermation from fred buttinshine who i used to visit some times over the years after
i got out. i also visited some outher employees to
after i got out. including some of the teachers there. iv kept a friendship with some of them. cause they ware kind of like family to me. When I
was there. the buttinshines. both betty and fred
were good to me when i was there

to any kirkbride building fans. out there. iv discovered that new york also had two more kirkbride styl hospitals. they were the manhatten and kingsbore psychatrice centers. there kirkbride
buildings were torn down way back in the erly
1900s. check out the asylum projects .com web site. there may be mere institutions that had these
types of buildings on there campuses. in case anybody is wandering why im fasinated with these
building. is because a lot of them were quite builtiful structures. they were almost castle like
buildings. with a lot of arcatectral detail that you
dont find on most modren buildings today

if you check out the kirkbride building website. you will find that there were 3 styls of kirkbrides
the first generation was a continuase building.
they looked more like a fortress. the later styls were the ones im fastinated with. they were more
ornate and there ward buildings were saperate. but connected with inclosed passage ways. to me the two most spectacular ones were in buffilow ny
and danvers ma. they were gathic desine almost
looked like churches

these buildings had spires and towers and the
bay styl windows. i also like the way that a lot of
them disgised there window bars. having muti paned windows the bars looked like the lower sash of the windows. the patients could open and
close the windows with out being able to escape
thrue them. crane hill origenaly had mulipaned
windows on the building if any one remembers there was one window on the second floor. that still had the bars on it. it was in the main stair well
on the second floor. i hated the fact that we couldnt open the windows any time we wanted to
cause they had detention schreens on them

alther the bars that crane hill had oridgnaly ware
more comspeculise. then on some kirkbride buildings. an effort could have been made to acomdate both security and looks and comfort. but it was cheaper to put new windows on it. and
put the scheens on the inside. and anouther thing
is that most asylums built in the 1900s had dormitorys insted of bedrooms. agine that was cost drivin. in the old kirkbrides they had bedrooms. in the few asylums of today they are back to bedrooms insted of dorms

Dawn, if you need any insight for your book, I'd be happy to help, I have my records which "enlightened" me greatly. Talking to someone else about this might prove to be good therapy.
