Duh. That's why we have the Safe Sanctuaries program, Meathead.

I had to look up where Rossville is. In rural Kansas, like everywhere else, the dangers of sexual assaults of children come primarily from relatives and persons known to the child like ministers, teachers, etc.

The Methodists are probably more successful than some other denominations in protecting children because we don't put a lot of stock in pastoral authoriteh. We recognize that pastors do not control folks' lives and do not require they submit themselves. Teaching kids to say "No!" and resist inappropriate overtures from adults and older kids is the most effective thing that can be done to protect them.

Except for all the UMC pervert "authoriteh"s that molest children.
"Meanwhile, another United Methodist church in Tennessee is reeling after its youth pastor was indicted on charges of sexually abusing three young boys over a period of several months in 2000 and 2001.
Following an investigation by the Department of Human Services, 33-year-old Curtis Hudson was charged with one count of child rape, three counts of rape, and seven counts of battery by an authority figure.
The charges stem from sexual misconduct allegations lodged by youth at First United Methodist Church in Jackson.
Ben Boone is superintendent of the Jackson district of the United Methodist Church in Memphis Conference. He says the church already has policies in place to deal with sexual misconduct.
"We've had policies within our annual conference for the last few years dealing with safe sanctuary, providing safe places for our children and youth," Boone says, " the United Methodist Church has a policy in our Discipline that gives us guidelines for dealing with issues of sexual misconduct."

Seems the only SAFE sanctuary in the UMC is to be far away from the children, eh Roovert?
One case from 2001? Every church should have a good a record as that. If that's the best you've got to attack the UMC, it ain't anything.

Who?

UMCers are seekers. My critics lack intellectual rigor so I doubt the denomination would appeal to them. Most would prefer being told what to think.

From the Missouri Conference, the Methodist policy on Pedophiles:

"Assuring the safety of children in our care, our facilities and our programs is a sacred duty. We must weigh that duty in the balance with what often seems the conflicting value of participation in the life of the church by a convicted child abuser."

"Recent studies suggest a low likelihood that pedophiles can or will change."

None. But at the UMC they turn Pedophiles into Lay-Speakers and Sunday School Teachers for the kids.

Every time I've investigated a case of child sexual assualt the family rallies behind the offender. They cannot believe he did it and find some way to blame the victim.

The UMC policy is pretty much standard. Convicted sex offenders are like everyone else persons who can benefit from ministry. Prudently, the UMC and other denominations don't allow such persons to teach Sunday School and so forth.

It appears Jerry and the other ignorami who know nothing of this issue assume there are no sex offenders whose victims were children in their churches, but, of course, there are, probably on the pew right next to them. When 1/3 of all women and 1/4 of all men report having been sexually assaulted as children, how could it be otherwise? Most such incidents are never reported or investigated criminally or by child protection agencies.

Actually, you've described two simeultaneous phenomena which are unrelated. All churches have "short eyes" in the clergy and the volunteers. Just like the Boy Scouts, schools, etc. Gun afficianados go to gun shows and rifle ranges, because that's where the guns are and where they're used. For the same reason, those who offend against kids go where they are.

The Catholics got a bad rap for their handling of such incidents because they covered them up and reassigned the offenders to other parishes where they offended again. Other denominations also have them in their midst and address the issue also. There is no church body at all which is unaffected - and of those that are, in many cases the victims' outcries go ignored.
