We keep hearing from a few religious extremists that hurricane Katrina was God's punishment of New Orleans for hosting 'Southern Decadence'.

One has to wonder why the portion of the city that is generally perceived as being the most gay-friendly, where this celebration takes place, received the least damage.

Either God has bad aim, or just maybe it had nothing to do with 'Southern Decadence' at all.

I have to wonder about those who believe that God is up in heaven looking for someone to "smite."

Growing up in a devout Catholic Christian home, I was taught about how deeply and perfectly God loves ALL of his people; that only good things come from the One who is perfect love!

Wake up, my dear Christians. Behave as if you are followers of the Christ! If you do, there will be no room for judgement or condemnation of others. Fix your own life, love others, find God!

WOW, if God was pissed at New Orleans for Southern Decadence, then he must have been ACREMONIOUS at the Bush family in 2004 and 2005!

I mean, look....7 hurricanes hit FL in 1 year, 1 hit N.O.....so perhaps god was MORE pissed at Gov. Bush than anyone else!

HMMM, maybe he's mad at florida in general, or could it be that florida just keeps getting in the way. silly state, dangling all that way out into the gulf, like that.
not that New Orleans has a lot of Saints( no pun intended), but when god has gone out of his way to destroy a city there usally was nothing left. And sent a few warnings first usually with prophets, before the fact, not after. We dont need to point fingers and say
god is punishing you, we need to lift each other up, and hopefully go on to better things instead, and i think that god would be a lot more pleased with that.

hmmm...or maybe bad things dont come from God, but from Satan. Remember, the world is Satan's, and the world is under Satan's control. wow, you guys have no faith in God... you seem like the kind of people who would get mad at God if they don't win the lottery, or if their great grandmother died. Grow up, if nothing bad ever happened you would complain that your life is boring.

you were duped by the catholic church. the catholic church doesn't push a vengeful wrathful g-d because then catholic's will have fewer children and give less money

and the funny thing is, mardis gras is a roman catholic event, that for the past 50+ years technology has pumped up into what it became, combined with sport, gamblinmg & prostitution

consider that katrina occurred after occurred after the tsunami of 2004, which incidentally was predeeded 40 years earlier by the good friday quake/tsunami in alaska, that makes it the first official 'wrath of g-d' event on this nation after a 40 year period of judgement

perhaps next years hurricane season will be tempered accordding to how messed up this years mardis gras was

so did g-d punish us? you bet He did!

Well Olivia...you are patially correct...scientifically yes that was what happened, but what took place after that was God decided he had enough of the crap going on in New Orleans and reached down and flushed that toilet.

If god punished New Orleans for it's decadence and corruption - why is a certain part of Washington DC still standing? Why is it that the parts of Florida most affected by the hurricanes in the previous year where mostly those lived in by so-called self-described value voters? How come the "gay" part of New Orleans was the one least affected? Why did god seemingly strike the poor and disenfranchised instead of either the LGBT community or the the weatlthy pseudo-religious bigots?

I am missing the consistency in this idea of god striking New Orleans as punishment.

listen, bobo... get a grip. there is nothing that goes on in new orleans that your 'god' doesn't condone... afterall, marde gras is a roman catholic (christian) holiday. what has been dubbed as decadence is simply a celebration of life which your 'god' also condones...

what took place afterward was simply the ineptitude of your government and your bumbling and bungling politicians who have better places to spend the money such as on ilconcieved wars... it seems a bit ironic that yoru federal gov't. can afford to spend billions of dollars per day on an illegal war when they can's spend a few million one time on the defence of new orleans agaisnt a natural disaster that they knew was coming more than a week in advance.
