Get the sorry ass School Board Members off of it. They and their families are bleeding it dry. School Board Members ARE NOT FULL TIME EMPLOYEES (and possibly people on other county boards, etc). If you are not a Full Time County Employee, you have no business having the taxpayers payinng the Employer's Portion (if not the whole premium) of the premium for you and your family members' coverage.

Well, for one, those who have multiple jobs within the school system should be kicked to the curb! We don't need part time employees for full-time positions!!!

Hell No someone elected to the School Board is not earning the Insurance Coverage are getting. They are paid way too much just for being on the board, but their crooked asses voted to allow them to ride the County Insurance at the taxpayer's expense. They need to buy their own Family Policies from a Private Insurance Company and quit soaking the taxpayers. Uphold them if you like, but your ass will pay for it with higher taxes along with the rest of us keeping thier sorry ***** up.

Ok, you say they are paid way too much for being on the board? What is their annual salary to serve on the school board, this is an elected position.

I know I would not do it for less than $25,000 per year.

NO Crown Vics are NOT necessary the school board needs to be buying Nissan and Toyota like DMME is buying. They cost lest and last twice as long. Save the TAX PAYER some money. I don't have an issue on how many they are buying just what they are buying.

Everyone else is being forced to make due with less. The government should be no different. With all the jobs lost in this county it's no wonder there is a deficit. They need to have less people and less money to spend just like the rest of us. And I pay for my own healthcare. So should they.

I'm not a teacher or a county employee but I know for a fact each and every county employee has a co-pay on their health insurance, it's not FREE by a log shot. With the LOW PAY teachers receive in the county at least their insurance should be free. I fully understand the teachers leaving to work in Washington and Scott Counties. Who really gives a rats ass it's only our children?

Please share with all of us in Russell county how you would fix this deficit "Fed Up". I have lived in this county for almost 40 years. I attended school here for 13 years in Russell county. Our teachers taught us arithmetic in elementary school. So prove them wrong by telling all of us how we can do more with less. Less jobs=less taxes paid. Taxes pay for government jobs. Please tell us how we can sustain more and more and more money in Russell county with less and less and less paid in. Enlighten us.

Don't blame the school board blame the people of Russell County!!! Remember back a few months ago when the school board wanted to close several of the schools in the county and there was such an uproar. If people would have kept their damn mouth shut and the schools would have closed, we would not have the upkeep of the school, would have fewer teachers, and fewer principals.

2011-12 School Year

Belfast Elk Garden Elementary (2 schools) 175
Castlewood Elementary 510
Castlewood High 449
Cleveland Elementary 130
Copper Creek Elementary 123
Givens Elementary 77
Honaker Elementary 673
Honaker High 478
Lebanon Elementary 332
Lebanon High 696
Lebanon Middle 330
Lebanon Primary 331
Swords Creek Elementary 125

Look at some of the grades by school unreal low enrollment.

If everone in the county would have kept quiet, how many less school board members would there be? Or cars as mentioned earlier? Not a damn one. We have $$$ to payout and $$ set aside to spend. The thread started over paying benefits to part time personnel including board members. What part of deficit don't you understand?

There would be NO LESS school board members each district elects a board member to the school board just like they do the supervisor a total of 7 on each (school board and board of supervisors). These are elected positions, I guess the charter of Russell County would have to be changed to elect 5 total or would you want 3 county wide making the decision.

YOU are right on $$$ to payout and $$ to spend that is WHY we need fewer schools. Cleveland Elem school Grade 2 10 students, Grade 3 13 students, Grade 4 16 students, Grade 5 9 students, Grade 7 13 students, some of the other schools are almost as low.

Agreed. So many families have learned the meaning of a word or teachers taught so many years ago. A word that escapes most of the government of the United States. A word that will solve the deficit here in Russell county. LESS.
What I heard

From what I have heard the problem is not just too many schools there are too many personnel in the school system, instead of having separate classes for special needs or slow learning children they have all these aides sometimes two to a single class room along with the teacher, the school system has gotten to big to pay for itself, the teachers (although I agree need to be paid a fair wage) are given these bonuses from leftover budget money that is added on to their current salary a salary that has to be kept up every year after that by the county
a good place to start

is to get rid of the "buddy/family" plan. Get rid of all the friends and relatives of the local cliques who are employed merely because of who they know or who they are related to. You have uneducated spouses of board members and other faculty and the friends of so and so employed at the taxpayer expense adn these people really could be done without.
If anyone wants to see what is really wrong with Russell County-take the time to sit down and draw out a chart of all county agencies showing who is employed by each agency and what the salary is -then start cross referencing who is related to whom and your conclusion will be "OH MY GOD-WHAT A FAMILY TREE". All you have to do is research a little to see who is related to whom and who is friends of so and so and of course who is doing whom. There you will see why the county is broke.
