You spelled family wrong in this forum and the Richlands forum genius. It must be such an important aspect of your life.

The only thing diminishing the coal industry is corporate greed and low demand for the archaic form of energy production. The world is moving on, and anyone who refuses to move on with the rest of the world is a victim by their own choice and no one else's.

The politicians that have sold out manufacturing jobs are Republican there chief. They outsourced jobs to Asia, Mexico, and South America where there are no labor unions and they can pay people very little on the hour.

And if you can't even spell the word family, how in the hell do you expect anyone to take anything that you say seriously? The notion that just because this is a public forum, we should just take a steaming dump on the English language is alarming.

If this area's way of life is solely tied to a low skill job that destroys the environment, I really don't think that I would proudly flaunt that. People that want to work find a way to work....even if it involves moving to an area with more jobs or furthering their education to broaden their options.

Making assumptions about me is childish and ignorant. I work my ass off every day and I pay much more in taxes than most people earn in this place. I'm no wealthy and neither are my parents. I am a middle class taxpayer that votes for candidates that have the best interests of the American public in mind, and not the best interests of Corporations and special interest groups. 33 nations to turn against us? PLEASE cite your source on that nonsense. The bible network and Glenn Beck are not considered news. I can see why you are afraid of classrooms now. Classrooms contain factual information, which is something that apparently scares the shit out of you.

And who the hell invests money into anything in a place that you have to drive to the next county to get a minimum wage job. That is a bad personal choice, and hey, you are the party of taking personal responsibility for your actions, so deal with it. If you want to stay in a place like this and complain about being poor, and make excuses about why you can't be successful because you bought a house and your kids are in the local 3rd rate schools, then have fun being poor.

You are a real piece of work....your opinion is what is wrong with this country....do you sit in the dark or does coal keep your lights on and your ass cool in the summer and warm in the winter. 1 typo (not a misspelling) in a litany of comments, you can have that one. Hydroelectricity has provided me with electricity the vast majority of my life. Natural gas costs less and isn't as environmentally costly. Does asking me to give my name so some coal miners can make empty threats make you feel like an American badass? The problem with the country today is that people allow excuses to block success. There is always a way to win, but you have to look for it, and you have to be willing to do what it takes to get there. People who sit around and bitch and blame the President (instead of the greedy corporations) when they could be putting that energy into starting a career, or hell at least working two jobs, those people are the problem with this country pal.

The greedy corporations want more money and NO regulations. Believe me they don't give a rats ass for their employees, they get a few employees killed, they just fill the positions back. They also fully understand the law of supply and demand. What I hate is them playing with employees lives, by laying them off until after the election with the HOPES of them voting for Romney. There is not a coal miner in United States that makes enough money to be consider in the middle class according to Romney.

YES I will be voting for Obama!!!

Who gives a rats ass about spelling or grammar. The fact remains that if it weren't for coal and the rewards from it, then the lights in this country would still not be turned own. Right wing blow hards like the self righteous one posting here about moving on probably believes that we would be fine without the invention of the wheel. Go one week without electricity, phone, and your ride. Then tell us about moving on. Coal is what keeps your lights on, cooks if food (if you're capable) and provides the ability to build that high $ ride you have.

You realize that coal is not the only source of electricity, right? Natural gas costs less, and if it replaced coal; it would significantly reduce the cost of electricity for consumers. What kind of dumbass concludes that I would think we would be ok without the wheel, when I am advocating new technology and more efficient means of producing electricity. I imagine you probably don't think grammar is important when you can't even piece together a rational f'in thought. You solidify your status as a complete douche if you conclude that I am right wing after reading my posts.

It is apparent that you are a young uneducated individual that lacks the appreciate for what got you were you are today. My father gave his life in the mines and the fact that you are so disrespectful to what and who made it possible for you to turn out to be a snotty nosed brat pisses me off. You are probably one of those brain dead idiots that doesn't have a clue of the principles this nation was founded on. I have an idea, leave go some place that agrees with your "forward thinking" and let us hillbillies be. We're happy with our way of life, if we weren't then we'd leave. Take a hint.

Well I'm from this area and I happen to agree with WTF's forward thinking. It's time that our area wake up and realize that just bc a mines shuts down, doesn't mean that we are going to be without electricity. I mean come on, do you really think that our lights might go off??? Wtf?? And also I hear so many people talk about loved ones dying in the coal mines, seems to be a pretty good assumption that for safety reasons you wouldn't want more people doing down into these death traps. It is time that our part of the country move into the 21st century and embrace these alternate forms of energy. The majority of our problem are small minded people who are ok with a sub par way of life, but the good thing is that the way of life I just described is slowly dying off, giving way for the free thinkers to ease their foot in the door just a little bit more.

I am probably more educated than your entire extended family combined. I have worked since I was 14 years old. I worked two jobs to put myself through four years of college. I know a lot about hard work, and a lot more than you about what the founding principles of our nation are. That is one of those forward thinking things that you are taught in college... foundations of government and society. Just because you are 'hillbillies', does not mean that you are somehow entitled to live in an area without rational thought and without people who use books for more than beer can coasters. Take a hint, it's the 21st century and progressivism is even saturating your 'hillbilly' territory.

FYI... My wife and I both have obtained a master's degree, our siblings are equally educated. I have extensive knowledge of our great nations history. My issues are with the younger generations way of thought. It is undeniable that our lives and economy are infinitely better today than they were twenty years ago(sarcasm). Society and the free thinkers have deviated to far from the standards that have made us successful as a nation. I can only assume that your parents never taught you that if it's not broke don't fix it. Innovation applied to the industrialized portion of life yes but not to a way of life that has paved the way for an entire nation. If it were not for coal this area would not be what it is today, hell you probably wouldn't be here. Really not a bad thing if you consider the above ignorance state from the other contributing parties.

"If it were not for coal this area would not be what it is today"

Is that a good thing? Is it possible that if coal mining didn't exist here that the area may have become more educated because the reliance on low skill work that requires no post secondary (if it even requires secondary) education would not exist? Is it possible if the population here was more educated, and lacked the abundance of bigotry that consumes some here, that the area would be attractive to various industries? If it were attractive to various industries, maybe industries would operate here, creating jobs, which would create a need for more retail and fine dining. Most areas outside of this little bubble figured out decades ago that mixing money and stupid people is a bad idea, that is why businesses that create jobs avoid places packed full of stupid (not formally educated) people.

Furthermore, the ideology of if it isn't broke, don't fix it is what halts progress. It halts technological advances and paves the way for holding on to archaic values that reduce the value and competitiveness of a society.

It is obvious that you are clueless about you community. If coal mining did not develop the area then there would be nothing here. Lear and Alcoa tried it here didnt happen. This area is ideal for a plant of this nature. Educated or especially skilled labor is not needed, additional $10+/hr is considered a decent wage for noncollege educated people.$20 or more per hour in the mines is more than many college grads make in this area. Do you think Old dominion would have invested millions in this area without doing appropriate research? There are people far more intelligent than you investing in coal in our region than you. Really??? Think about.

Hey guys, there was a deadly solar energy spill outside! Let's all go play in it. Haha. Seriously. Can anyone say that about coal smoke or an oil spill? Coal made this area. I can admit that. But time to move on. Alternate forms of energy. Advancement. New technology! The future gives me a woody every time I think about it. Perhaps if we had actually taken the time to invest in alternate energy forms, the fallout from so many jobs being lost would not have nearly sucked so badly. Close a coal mine in Germany, lose 40000 jobs. Open solar city at Gelsenkirchen, gain 72300. I put those numbers into a calculator, and it makes a happy face. WTF your arguments are valid and it is a shame that our area is stuck in the past. But hey. Starve or move on.
