I hope you don't go to England any time soon. While my hubby's mum was still alive we used to go there like every 2 years or so. All meals have a service fee tacked on for the wait staff. Tipping is not expected, but no one ever turned down the extra pound coin I would throw on the bar or table, if they were REALLY doing their job well, I'd give him or her a five pound note.
A waiter is looked at as a real career in Britain, as it is in Europe. In this country, you included, many think of a waiter as a kid in college or struggling actor or someone NOT talented or smart enough to get a REAL job. I got news for you, I consider anyone who gets up every day, deals with strangers and provides a service a true full citizen and he or she has my ultimate respect. This could be a salesperson, a fire fighter, a doctor, whatever.
of course, a meal there is going to cost you at least $40-50 that would cost you half that in the USA. Would that be less offensive to your delicate demeanor? Letting the restaurant pick up the messy tipping action and charging you more, then giving it to him or her?
Yes, I'd much prefer Britain's system.

Now, I am TRULY confused. That makes you complicit in the whole tipping game, enabling the restaurant and its staff, so to speak.
Correct, I prefer the employer to pay the employee.

I'll pay the employer.

That's the way it should be.

Sorry, but no one is entitled to a tip- gay, straight, or otherwise.
I'm sure you'll agree however that since that customer knew the waiter is gay and was disgusted over it he should have chosen a different waiter. While it would have been discriminatory to choose a different waiter who is straight it is the lesser of the evils. He had a gay waiter working for him hoping to get a tip and then dashed his hope all to pieces and was even blunt and blatant about it to the waiter as to the reason why he wasn't tipped. He sought out to cause the waiter emotional harm out of hatred for him and all who are like him. He's a bigot!

I agree waiters and waitress should be paid a decent wage, at least a little more than minimum wage and the customer may throw in a tip if they want but not have it be expected. Somehow restaurants get away with paying less than minimum wage and have the tips compensate for the rest. I don't understand why and how they are exempt from paying minimum wage unlike other types of businesses but they are.

For those who are saying the guy was within in rights not to tip maybe so but why did he chose a gay guy to be his waiter when he could have discretely chosen another person to serve him who he would have been happier with. He used this situation to punish the man because he is gay. This is immoral, unethical, un-Christian, and un-American. It's blatant discrimination! I would have had more respect for a person who chose another waiter (as discriminatory as that still would have been) then to use this situation to gay bash. The customer is a homophobic bigot! Yeah he has that right but that doesn't mean he IS in the right. The restaurant could also refuse service to someone like him especially after what he wrote on the ticket. I hope they tell the man not to come back. If they are as intolerant of bigotry (toward and from employees and customers) as they say that is what they'll do.

But, if you know you have no intention of tipping someone from the start because you don't like they are gay the appropriate thing to do in that situation is discretely ask for another waiter or waitress to serve you and not write anti-gay things on a ticket. Gay people should not have to be subjected to that, no one should. People shouldn't have to wonder whether they'll get a tip or not because they are black or the customer suspects they are gay when all a white person who appears to be heterosexual has to worry about is whether they gave good service.

True, but what THOSE idiots were obviously too stupid to consider is that a) unless he came out to them, which is highly unlikely, they were just using stereotypes to decide he was gay and b) suppose the straight waiter was married and fooling around outside his marriage? They wouldn't know that any more than they'd know anything else to judge the wait staff on.

The reason they stuck with the "gay" waiter is because they were obviously looking for someone to use as a scapegoat to "prove" their love and devotion to their hateful god by hurting someone else.

All I can say is, someone's got a reserved seat in hell and it's not the gay waiter.

They're not exempt from paying minimum wage. If servers don't make enough in their base pay plus tips to equal at least whatever minimum wage is, they restaurant has to make up the difference. In most restaurants, though, that's an extremely rare event.

It's the same for farm workers. They often get paid a dollar or two an hour plus a certain amount for each bushel or row or pound or whatever. Basically it's piecework--the more you complete, the more you get paid. But if the worker doesn't produce enough piecework to get to minimum wage, the farm has to make up the difference. But, again, that's pretty unusual. Most of the farm workers *I* know make $15-$20 an hour because they're good at what they do and the farmers appreciate it.

Talk to that idiot Ronald Reagan. He's the one that came up with that restaurant wage. Oh... he's dead. Good!

Do you think people take a servers job for fun? Do you think kids fresh out of college think, "Gee... Now I can begin my career as a server!" People take serving jobs because they need the money. I seriously doubt if it's ANYONE's first choice of a job. They depend on their tips to pay their rent and feed their family until they can find something better.

I wonder how the servers in your fantasy restaurant with no tipping, feel about having an 8% tax deducted from each check, but receive no tips to offset it. That must be really fun at tax time. Imagine how much a meal would cost if the owner paid his staff regular minimum wage. And let me remind you, minimum wage is poverty level wages... they even qualify for food stamps. One in seven Americans get food stamps

Let me repeat. One in seven Americans receive food stamps.

Highly profitable business pay such low wages that the government has to subsidize their employees with food stamps. It's wrong. Refusing to tip your server will not change ANYTHING.

Tipping your server won't change anything EITHER; in fact it will only ensure the inequities in pay continues.

Why should it change? Most people don't mind tipping. It's considered good manners and a mitzvah.

People were complaining about the difference in minimum wage for those getting tips.

If you want to keep that difference, that's fine by me.

As I keep saying, what a waiter is paid is between that employee & their employer.

Some people actually worked for no pay, just tips, for a long time until the law was changed. The restaurants screamed that they would have to close or lay people off if they had to actually PAY their employees. And it did squeeze some businesses out. People shouldn't have to work for free just because it's the only job they could find.

Change in a system comes from the top down.

While I do agree with you...

That the customer here was a jerkwad douchefaced buttmuncher...

And was merely looking for any reason to torment a fellow human being...

Using gay in this case as their excuse...

I do question your whitie hetero comment...

Let's see what I have been judged for in my life...

Yankee
Fat
Skinny
Male
Longhaired
Bearded
Not in a suit
Chauvinist
Pig
Whitie...yes I have been denied work because I was whitie
Couldn't speak spanish to my boss
Poor white trash
Jew...then Catholic...then Atheist
Talking back when called a Jew...said I was raised catholic
Accused of staring at a woman's breasts while she was weaing a hooter's shirt...

The list goes on...

I was told at civil rights marches in the 60s that whities like me wee not welcome...just twice...both were black males...and was quickly told by others around that were not white to ignore the ignorant...which I did

I've been fired so my boss could hire an illegal for 50 cents an hour less than he paid me...

And he was paying me less than minimum...

I may not know what being black is like...

But I do know what discrimination is...

And being refused a job due the color of my skin and my sex...

Life is tough out there...

For all of us...

Now we're seeing the new elitists emerging...

Sorry...didn't mean to babble

I never said that white and straight people never faced discrimination but will say it would be very rare in most of society to be discriminated against because one is white and/or heterosexual.
