I think I am the neighbor of a (the) couple involved, but we are lacking details of what actually happened.(I was searching the 'net to see if I could learn more, and found your post.)

We know they were out on their Harley cruising the hill country and that they were in an accident near Leakey. The wife died at the scene and the husband is in critical but stable condition at a San Antonio hospital, and he is not conscious.

We are absolutely devastated.

Can you tell us what you saw? The police are not sharing many details, but made contact with us yesterday trying to locate next of kin, which we've been assisting with. Anything more you tell us about the circumstances would help.

I rode up on the accident on 337 right outside Leakey. There was EMS on the scene. A white Harley was on the side of the road looked like it was broadsided. Man on the ground with oxygen not moving. Another person covered by fireman's coat I assumed deceased. Saw 2 pickups at the scene but they did not have obvious major damage. It was an open area and did not seem the place you would expect an accident??? I rode by quick, that is about all I know. I just starting riding again and seeing that scene was horrible. I am very sorry for their loss. I just had my wife with me on a 3 day trip to Fredricksburg and cannot imagine her lying there on the ground. Pls post if you hear more and I am so sorry for you, their friends and family. Looked like they were enjoying the beautiful day on their bike as we all were.

I can not thank you enough for sharing what you saw, it has helped to put some pieces together, we were so lacking in the accident details. I am sad to confirm that this indeed is the accident in which our neighbors were involved. We were told tonight that it was a single-vehicle (motorcycle) accident, apparently they lost control... suspecting some sort of malfunction or debris, animal, etc. We were stunned to learn it was just them involved... the husband is an accomplished engineer and pilot, and very, very thorough in equipment check. The hope (???) is that it was a freak accident that they could not have prevented. Hope to learn more at some point, though I guess it matters little now. We have gotten conflicting information at different points since this ordeal began, but this is what we were told tonight.

The wife was pronounced at the scene, consistent with what you saw. I pray (and pray) that she didn't suffer. I fear her husband's suffering is just beginning - physically, emotionally, and spiritually. I can hardly bear it.

We drove to San Antonio tonight to see the husband and he is in very, very bad shape. We were told around midnight last night that he was not expected to live, but the news is much better today. He is unconscious (not comatose) with many broken bones, severe facial fractures, and bleeding on the brain, though his vitals are very strong. He's responsive to pain stimulus, and he actually squeezed my hand several times, which I want to believe was in response to me talking to him, but which may be only reflexive responses or reaction to being in pain. The greatest worry at the moment is the bleeding in the brain... the intracranial pressure had been good but then increased this afternoon, but then reduced to normal levels again this evening when they sedated him. I'm personally glad that he's not conscious, but of course we are terribly worried about his brain in particular. If he lives, he faces one hell of an uphill battle, and we pray his mind at least will be unaffected.

I confess it feels a little weird to share these details on a forum, so I am withholding names. But I'm so glad I found your post, and thank you again for your response. I humbly and earnestly ask for your prayers for the recovery of the husband, and for the peace and comfort of both families. This couple was in no way careless, and they are truly some of the most exceptional individuals I've ever known.

I have and will pray again for them. Again VERY sorry. From the scene it is hard to imagine what happened with no others involved. Only other thing I can think of is the road surface seemed new, as in new asphalt. Maybe some of it was loose. If you hear more pls post. I hope the man recovers and that he can find a way to go forward without his wife.

take care

An article appeared in the Austin paper today, giving more detail, and indicating that the husband, not the wife, was driving. Apparently lost control on a sharp turn and ran into a concrete barrier, both were thrown.

Here's the article:
----------
Crash kills Round Rock woman

A Round Rock woman was killed and her husband was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident Saturday near Leakey.

Jake Sanchez, a Department of Public Safety senior corporal, said the accident happened just before 1 p.m. on RM 337, about three miles from Leakey.

Sanchez said 71-year-old William O'Neal was driving the motorcycle eastbound with his wife, Lisa O'Neal, as a passenger.

William O'Neal attempted to take a sharp left turn, but the motorcycle skidded sideways, hit a concrete culvert and ejected both riders.

Sanchez said both were wearing helmets.

Lisa O'Neal was pronounced dead at the scene, and William O'Neal was hospitalized with critical injuries.

----------

Bill's condition is unchanged: critical but stable, still unconscious. Prayers again much appreciated.

Up late working and took a couple tangents and ended up back here.

Wanted to close the thread by noting that Bill died on December 10th, having never regaining consciousness. He was mortally brain-damaged in the accident, though his vitals were very strong for a long while. He was 71, but didn't look a day over 60, and could've kicked my butt without trying, he was in phenomenal shape.:-)

My husband and I miss them both terribly, couldn't bring ourselves to celebrate Christmas even, we were in such a funk. I take great comfort, though, to know that they're together in heaven with the Lord. Wanted to say thank you to everyone who offered their prayers, they are very, very much appreciated.

My best.
