I think there are several ways that Textbooks could be made affordable.

*Using previous edition textbooks that cost 80% lower than current edition, but contain only 5% difference. Publishers should not be allowed to publish new editions until there is considerable advancement in the area,
*Using OPEN source textbooks that are available for free. Faculty should take these effort.
*Ask students to price compare across 50+ online website before buying, renting or selling. Websites like UsedTextbookPrices.com are free to use and provide instant price comparison for new, used, rental and international edition.
*Promote use of International Edition textbooks, which are cheaply available online. UsedTextbookPrices.com compares international edition prices if any are available online for a specific book title.
*Promote students to buy textbooks from other student. Win win situation for the selling student and the buyer students.

Perhaps you should stop visiting this website then.
It gets much, much worse.
You should see the tattered remains of my hometown forum...in a few weeks you won't even recognize your own forum.
Allow this thread to die and so shall the threat.
