Will anyone get any money from St. Joe? I played on Leadwood chat dump as a kid and have been sick most of my life. I always wonded if the Lead had anything to do with it.

I played on the slime branch, slid down the shady side all summer; I played in the ditches in front of my house where the diamond drills spent a lot of summer time, and I walked the road at the dam and pulled cattails for crafts. We grew our veggies, grapes and strawberries in the soil at the foot of the slime branch. We made tea from Sassafras growing in the yard. When it rained we played in mud, let it ooze between our toes. We hung out our laundry down wind from the mill. My experience is just the opposite. I am 63 years old and have been blessed with good health so far. My mother who was born and raised in Leadwood is 83 and so far is in very good health. My Great-Uncle who was born and raised in Leadwood, who worked for St Joe Lead Co. until he retired, was still cutting his own grass at age 90 and enjoyed good health all of those years. My great grandmother lived on West St. until she was past 90 years old and died of a heart attack. She never saw a doctor or entered a hospital, I don't remember her being ill. I am not saying lead concentration is not hazardous to health, but I know all of my family was in the thick of it during the years when St Joe Lead Co. was underground and crushing--and pumping underground water full of waste and minerals. I sometimes say I wonder what the reaction of a geiger counter would be if I walked past.
