My husband and I have a Utah concealed carry permit. We took our class at the Rocky Mountain Gun Show earlier this year. I have to say I'm getting quite upset with other states suddenly deciding our classes just aren't good enough. I felt the class was very thorough. On the other hand, if states are dropping us because the classes aren't intensive enough, maybe we should add a practical shooting session to the training. We already have to prove ourselves for hunter safety. I think the classes should still be held at the gun shows like they are now, but when people are done with those classes they should need to complete the training in a practical shooting location like a shooting range or something similar. The cost, however, should not increase it already costs an arm and a leg. It seems those of us who already have our CC permits could take an amended course that includes the practical shooting session. Places like Browning Arms and Impact Guns would be good locations. We've already paid our fee, so this extra training should only cost us our time. This is a simple solution. Communication should be open with the other states to make sure all their requirements are met. We need to get the most bang for our buck. All we want is a decent law abiding society. Look at Sweden, every house has a gun and look up their violent crime rate. It is the job of every citizen to protect the community!

I believe this is a golden opportunity for the NRA to help institute a new hunters safety program that has a hand gun safety training component added to it. In order to hunt game animals in Utah you have to have a hunters safety tag before you can get a license. They could require you to have taken a hunters safety course with hand gun training added to it. Thank heaven we are not looking at it like we are hunting humans, but the human safety component is the same. I believe it would not hurt to err on the side of safety training. The concealed weapons permit class I attended did discuss safety but did not do any supervised loading, cleaning, firing and unloading of the weapon. Having been raised all my young days on a farm and doing a lot of varmint hunting and target shooting as I grew up, handling a gun is second nature. My father was very strict about safety and was at my side many times before I was allowed to use the gun by myself with friends. On one particular hunting session we had a city slicker friend come out and go hunting with us. He was getting ready to slide the gun into the truck and I asked him if he had unloaded it. He said he had and then slid it into the truck. Bam the thing went off putting a hole in the door. I was just going to step around and open the passenger door but stopped to talk to one of the other guys for a few seconds. I narrowly missed getting shot. Some people do not have any idea how quickly a fun time can turn into a tragedy. If people are coming here to get a permit because it is easier; the State should not let money determine the policy. I think in a Governors meeting they should get together and solve the situation.

I am suprised that there was no mention of the idiot, who had to have a conceal carry permit who in the gun show shot off a round into the floor right before the 13 crew came through. My only hope is that this fool loses his permit and gets some serious consequence. He is an embarrassment for those of us who want the right to have the permit.
