Yes that is the truth our schools our going way down....when the leadership is bad, we lose all of our good teachers and administation. I hope something is done to clean out central office and get rid of half of these principals.
Brady Thorton, was the best thing going at the high school... So sad

You were misinformed regarding the Spanish hire. All teachers must be certified, and unless the person is grandfathered through under older regulations (which likely wouldn't be the case for a new hire), certification means a degree in the field, plus successful completion of a subject exam and a general teaching exam. The only exception to that rule would be if the person is emergency-certified; a designation that only lasts for one year and is only available after the school has searched for and found no one qualified, and only then if the district gets approval from the state. Even in the case of an emergency non-certified exception, that person must be eligible to work in the U.S. and must pass the same background checks as any other school employee.

You mean Paul Blackhurst, the school police officer? To my knowledge he is not, nor has he ever been, a Spanish teacher. Regarding the two teachers who have left (one solely Spanish, one Spanish/French), I was not under the impression that having either of them leave was any great loss. One of them left rather than being asked to leave, because she refused any and all assistance in improving her teaching (and her teaching was definitely in need of assistance). If you don't believe me, ask any student who had her in their French or Spanish classes.

To all of you who seem to be worried about the mess at ACHS and the loss of Brady Thornton, never fear.....you still have Ronnie Fields leading the way and "taking care of business". Baaaaahaaaaa!!

Paul Blackhurst DID teach spanish so get your facts straight. and if you are talking about Hoglen she was not a bad, teacher she was not fired or asked to leave she went to a better job because she hated the administration and thier lack of consistancy she taught in Europe were students respect teachers and it did not help that a special ed teacher did not like her and was trying to always get her trouble and Doyle was a wonderful teacher and person she is now at Paul Dunbar making much more money than she did in Anderson County, Is it just a coincidence that so many people from Arts and Humanity are leaving? or could it be they are tired of the way they are treated? Also "You heard Wrong" some FYI All of the good teachers ARE leaving. Kathy Pirat and Chris Webb the two best math teachers gone... Higgins best science teacher gone... Tabitha Doyle gone....Karen Lacefield Best art teacher gone... Prost gone... Turner gone..Carlton gone.. Rucker gone... Leslie White gone...Alice Brown gone... Sutherland gone...Brady Thorton Best principal..gone why are all these wonderful teachers leaving... because of poor leadership. Ask any teacher at the high school and they will tell you just like they have told me.

First, "I know", if you go back and look at my posts, you will see I was correcting a factual misinterpretation regarding certification, not commenting one way or another about the administration. I personally am NOT a fan of the administration, and I was in a position to know until I too sought alternative employment, and I know plenty of people in the building, including every one you just named.:)
Now, again correcting some errors: Chris Webb is still teaching in the building. The man has umpteen years and is eligible for retirement, but he is still teaching physics part-time next year. Misty Higgins got a job paying twice as much in Shelby county working in central office. Rucker got his principal's certification and there were no open principal jobs in ACHS at the time, so he went to Shelby county.
Now, all that said. I DON'T disagree with you about the administration. Some of the people who left or chose to retire when they did were probably influenced by their dislike of some changes within the building. My primary problem with all of these threads on Topix is that there are STILL GOOD PEOPLE IN THE BUILDING. Yes, a number of good teachers have left. In many cases, they have been replaced by promising young teachers who will be just as well-liked within a few years. A number of veteran teachers are still there, and putting up with administrative changes because they love their kids and want to do the best teaching they can. Does the administration need shaking up? Probably. But don't confuse the administration with the entire school and its staff. There are lots of people in that building still busting their asses to do their best by their kids.

It seems to be that decisions made in hiring the wrong people and not being able to keep good teachers are in keeping with the normal flow of things at the ACBofEd; the way they have been at least for a while. It will always be that way as long as residents and parents do nothing. Employees griping and parental grumbling is of little or no consequence.

the joke is what they expect the students to carry with them, i mean your telling me every class has to have a 3 ring binder, folders and all that crap to pack with them. and dont dare go to a locker and be tardy cause you wont get into the classroom!
it is ridiculous. plus expect the parents to take out a loan for a calculator for one class, it is the most obsurd thing i have ever heard.
