Thank God these two ladies found this baby before he/she froze to death. What is wrong with this girl? All she had to do is walk into a hospital, fire station or police station, hand them the baby, and leave. It's that simple. She should be charged with attempted murder on this one. There is no excuse for leaving this baby out in the cold. She is selfish and stupid.

I imagine that she hid her pregnancy from her parents so she probaly panicked when she went into labor and was not thinking straight.I bet she just wanted to ge rid of the baby so no one would find out about the pregnancy.See this is what happens when you dont have a open relationship wih your kids. She probaly was afraid to tell her parents she was pregnant.Thank god that the two women found the baby before she froze to death.

The mother should be charged with attempted murder. A 17 year old is an adult and knows that a baby cannot survive in a shoe box on a porch in this cold of weather. There are safe Havens!!!! FOR A REASON.

Maybe she didnt know about the safe haven law. I think they should let the teens know about this law at school. So this doesnt happen as often.

Who cares if she knew about the law or not? She was willing to risk that babies death in order to avoid getting in trouble. I don't care what kind of relationship you have with your parents, that is just plain evil.

Shaking head ...... It doesn't sound like she was mature enough to make any kind of decision ...... from using birth control to risking a life by placing a human in a shoe box. It could have been worse - she could have placed her baby in a trash bag and then a dumpster. It's too bad she didn't take the baby to her local hospital to drop off and be protected by the safe haven law. Community North and Community East Hospitals aren't that far away from Lawrence - but maybe she couldn't get there - maybe she doesn't drive - those who do drive would tell. Glad to hear the baby is doing well at Riley.

She knew what she was doing was wrong. If not, she wouldn't have tried to hide from it.

You are right i knew this girl personally and she was afraid of tellin anyone about her baby people continually asked her if she was pregnant and she always claimed she was just getting fat.

I am glad mom and baby are both ok. I think teenagers need to be educated about the law. I bet most don't have a clue. I know she did wrong-but I still feel for her. She most likely went thru birth by her self(!) and was scared to death and not thinking strait.

This only further proves that she was more concerned about herself than she was about the baby.

Nah - still disagree overall. She was probably more afraid of getting in trouble from someone in her family - not mature enough to see this baby as another human being. Sounds like she was in denial during the pregancy too. When she gets older and more emotionally mature, her actions will probably hit her like a ton-of-bricks, and then she'll have another issue to deal with.

I agree that she should understand there are consequences for her actions, but lean toward education rather than punishment. I also feel that since she is a minor, the parents should face consequences also. They are still responsible for her actions and obviously had their own parenting issues as she managed to get pregnant and hide it. Parents might become more diligent if they were held responsible.

Just wondering if you knew her personally, what do her parents think now that they do know about the baby? Are they going to try to get custody or just let the baby go to adoptive parents? I would choose the second if I were them. Thet obviously had no relationship with one daughter, why would anyone want them to raise another child to do the same thing when they are grown. I hope they go for just letting the baby go and not fight for rights.

She probably reported it because she was probably in a lot of pain and discomfort. Where did she have this baby, anyway?

The girls nationality has nothing to do with it. "SHE WAS IN SCHOOL". She made several bad choices. She is still a CHILD, 17 is not an adult. 18 by law, is considered an adult but that doesn't make you any more resposible than you were at 17. Why is it that by law you are an adult at 18 and anything you do is looked upon as an adult except drinking you can't do that until you are 21. Why? You are more mature and hopefully more resposible. EDUCATION is what is lacking our YOUTH. IN ALOT OF AREAS.
