There was no grocery store when we moved here and we knew that, and that was okay with us. Thats why we moved to a small town like RC. But we have lived here 10 years, and were never told we were getting a grocery store. But, from what I understand, there are some people that did like that small town feel and they were told by city government that we would be getting a grocery store. So they decided to settle here. I understand why they would be unhappy about that, they feel (and probably were) deceived.

Yes, there are people unhappy here, and there are people that are very happy here. I might not like everything that goes on, but my kid goes to school here and loves it. We have been happy with the schools and the teachers for the most part and I like the fact that there are numerous people that know my son, and that we have a good group of kids his age with good parents. I know that if my son does something wrong, I am going to find out. The people we have dealt with since we moved here
are all supportive of one another and watch out for each others kids. Thats what I like. I have been one of the lucky ones that has not had problems with their water bill, so I have no complaint there. I think you can find wrong in any city that you go to. In my opinion, best thing to do is go to the neighborhood your interested in and talk to people. Those are the people that you would be dealing with on a daily basis. Watch how people interact with others and their kids. Ask about the school and teachers. Topix is one way to find out about the town, but dont let it be your only way.

Good luck to you!

WOW!
Let me say first, that this is not the only site I have been reading for information about the community. We have visited Royse City and liked what we saw and the people we met. My first duty is to ensure there are good schools for my kids, a good churh for the entire family, and that it is safe. Second, my husband is a former city council member (6 years) and we know that it is our job to be involved to make a difference in the community.
And third, we have worked in Frisco/Plano for the past 9 years and want out! Yes, everything is close but there are so many people, cars, etc. Driving 10 minutes to the store does not sound like a hardship to me. It takes 10 minutes here just to get through all the lights.

My only statement directed at Floyd personally was that I did not think topix is an accurate representation of the views of RC residents as a whole. Paul (Hidden Creek - BTW - I live in Hidden Creek too and all of my neighbors love it here), why are you attacking me? Because I have lived here 30+ years and love this town? Because I defend the fact that this town is not a bad place to live? I know school board people, city council people, and others who have been here for a long time. None of them would attack any of you the way you attack them. Brutally honest? Honesty is based on fact, not personal opinions and to suggest anything written on topix is pure fact is ridiculous. As I said, words spoken out of anger are unproductive and should be beneath any rational, intelligent adult. Apart from you.
I love my neighborhood, but I hate the people that run this town including the council, mayor, city manager, and edc director.

Wife and I moved here over 15 years ago for a better place for our daugher who is now 18, about to graduate with honors and has had nothing but a positive experience in RC schools. Since we've lived here, we have never had any burgleries, have great neighbors!, visited several churches when we moved here and while all were good, settled on one where my daughter could get involve and learn and grow. As for our council, i am sure like any city, not everyone is going to like their decisions, and not every member will MAKE the right decisions. So goes life. But to compare to FW where we moved from, this is next to heaven. Plan on staying after she heads off to college. Come on down and visit when we are having a holiday thing downtown. You will find nothing but a bunch of families, kids, fun and home town entertainment.

Lee - my friends live in McKinney and do nothing but complain about traffic and other issues as well. They are looking here in RC. My brother lives in Rowlett, just off of Dalrock and he hates their city council, as well as traffic. We do have problems, don't get me wrong. I guess when I read what everyone is writing, I just don't feel we have it as bad as they feel we do. I too love the schools and churches. I have raised three children in these schools and have been pleased with their education and athletic endeavors. Good luck on your research!

My wife and I moved end of last year. We knew there was no grocery store in town. We moved to Hidden Creek and could not be happier. Only one complaint and it was stated earlier the water bill is high. I do enjoy not hearing the lovely boom of some young kids car stereo no sirens. I try not to get into the politics but all and all it is a very good community. Go live in most cities in DFW and you will appreciate this town a bit more.

Kevin, your very lucky Hidden Creek is a very nice subdivision with an active community association and spirit.

Unfortunately, many of the newer housing developments were thrown in and the builders ran as fast as they could. I blame the city to some degree for not getting better concessions from the builders (trails, trees, etc,)., and requiring that they stay through a certain build out number.

Sincerely happy for you that your enjoying the area.

We have been thinking of moving to Royse City in the near future. We have a young family and will be very involved in school and community activities. However, many of the posts on this site have caused us to re-think our decision. We are looking for a small town with good values and where everyone knows and watches out for everyone else. Where all that matters is that you love the holy spirit, no matter which church you choose to do it in. Were we wrong to think we had found such a place in Royse City?
I have wonderful neighbors. We reside in a respectable subdivision primarily, because of our stakeholders. My biggest issue is with the people that run this town, e.g., our city management, and the lack of code enforcement, additionally; we have experienced zero quality economic development to offset tax burden on residences. We have very few services locally. Between these two vital areas, we risk becoming a less desirable city, if they do not get their act together. I'm not impressed with the current city manager, he has received a lot of bad press and has gained little support from the public, the same applies to our EDC Director, and Mayor, I have heard that some of the council people need to go. They are wasting council seat (space) that could be filled with people that are more ambitious, innovative, creative, and courageous who can lead the city with a culture paradigm shift from the backward hill-billie era to more progressive sophisticated mindset.
There is no accountability in city hall. However, if you find the right neighborhood and you expect very little from your city government in return, then you will probably like it here.

Note these KEY WORDS/PHRASES:

Respectable subdivision (?)- Subdivisions are just housing tracts. Some are built for people with money; some are built for the rest of mankind.

Stakeholders - Please don’t aim your stakes at my heart.

Less desirable city - We are ALL less than desirable here, see?

They, their - Someone else should take responsibility, the poster won’t.
I’m not impressed - The old “We are not impressed”

Bad press - There is other press?

I have heard - Oh?

Wasting…space - Space is at issue in the city council?

Could be filled…ambitious, creative, courageous - Do we have any nominations? Do you picture yourself as a rising star in city politics?(“City” is a visionary term here…Royse Town would seem more appropriate.)

Culture paradigm shift - Hasn’t this puffery of expression died an ugly death? I want you to get off the paradigm and do something about cleaning up this town. I will supply the garbage bags.

Backward hill-billie era - Wouldn’t that be the Billie Holiday era? Or is it just a spelling and/or drinking problem?

More progressive - I’m sure you meant liberal or socialist.

Sophisticated - It’s sophistry you want? Manhattan is a bit north and east. Just get a subscription to the NY Times. Try the crossword.

Mindset - In this case, it must be an oxymoron.

Right neighborhood - Yes, of course. How silly of us to occupy all these wrong ones.

Wow, you really impress me, "DPD". You offer valuable information, we are so lucky we have you to ridicule every remark, response, or opinion. Quite frankly; smartasses like you ruin the community forum for the rest of us with your childish postings.

Oh. I didn't realize...excuse me, Your HOA-ness,(may I call you that?) I apologize for my lapse. I never exactly graduated from Harvard. I undeservedly “took up some space” there, in the early 60's. Card games, alcohol and girls - my triple major. Dropped out of college and, being of draft age, ended up enlisting into military service for much of the remainder of that little non-war in Vietnam (more cards, girls, booze) but I, as always, digress.

Hmmm. Oh yes, I was apologizing. Well, it all comes down to humility. I flunked both Humility 101 and obedience training. The teachers didn't like me; the dog ate my homework. But I've learned a lot since then, and I can get up at least the appearance of humility. A full-bore groveling just isn't in me unless I'm in the presence of someone like Your HOA-ness. I'm really, reeeeaaalllyyy sorry and humbled, now. You have invested in this community you dislike and you deserve to be served properly, now that your money is on the line.

We can start by razing everything you hate to look at.(Excuse me...could you spare my barns and my house? Do you really hate all those farm animals? Okay, okay...just asking. "HONEY, call the demolition people - we need to do some serious remodeling!")

Next, we can run off all these unsightly locals (these "hill-billies") who mindlessly hang around, whittling sticks and spitting tobacco all over the streets. Uneducated, uncouth, uncultured.

And the trees are blocking the view of the interstate, so they have to go. We can put up some more subdivisions where all that clutter was and we’ll only have what’s sophisticated, ambitious, creative, etc. More houses like yours, Your HOA-ness! How cool is that? The drive from Dallas will be so greatly improved that thousands will flock in to add to the cultural paradigm shift. I, for one, will be gratified, knowing that the stakeholders are enriched by all the changes. Grocery stores, parking lots, mega-stores and nearly identical brick homes, stretching from Ft. Worth to Greenville. Inspiring.

Oh crap...I've gone sarcastic again. I hate it when I do that. I had resolved to be repentant, give up childish smartass postings, and to be thankful for the advice you so kindly bestowed. Forgive me. I’ll surely do better next time you folks want to insult everything you didn’t bring with you from wherever it is you came from, Your HOA-ness.

Crowell, I respect your opinion. You've been in business here long enough to know a few things. I'm giving the current city government a bit more time before passing any sort of judgment. The problems they inherited are not easy to fix. The last batch of electeds really did some damage, but at least they kept Chief Tom on the police force. Royse City isn't alone in problems, of course; this same scenario is being played out all across the country, town after town. I love this place, despite the problems.

Thanks everyone for the honest feedback we were also thinking about moving to Royse City area but have changed our minds based on the cities negative reputation and your input.

Appreciate all your honest comments without sugarcoating.

Royse City is God's little gift to Texas. Great schools, great little town atmosphere, water is clean, people are friendly, town is clean, Mayor is the best we ever had and I hope he runs again and again and again.(NOTE: His wife keeps him in line as well!)Streets need some improvement, but they do what they can with the money they have. As we grow, so will our town's assets. Police Chief is also the best we have ever had and that cannot be said enough...the one prior to this was....well let's try to be positive here. However rumor has it that Chief Shelton may retire next year.
