SHOW PAYS TRIBUTE TO COUNTRY MUSIC'S BIGGEST STARS

Tuesday, June 17, 2008 4:43 PM PDT

There aren't many people who would pass up a marquee announcing “Charlie Daniels - Shania Twain - Faith Hill - George Straight - Gretchen Wilson - Live in Concert.” Tickets would be pricey, yet sales would be brisk. But would it happen? Highly unlikely.

Well, Barrie Cunningham of BC Entertainment, decided such a show shouldn't be an impossibility. Or at least the nearest thing to such a show. And Cunningham knew from where he stood. A long time tribute artist who has made a living portraying Neil Diamond, Cunningham has seen how audiences take to hearing songs sung in a voice and style that reflects their favorite artists.

So Cunningham set out to put together a show of his own-a show that featured some of the best of the best in the world of tribute performers. When the auditions ended he came to the conclusion that country music was fertile ground for such a show. Fans were loyal, artists were plentiful and staying power is money. Thus, he lined up performers he could be proud of and created “Superstars of Country Music”, a show he brings to the Riverside Resort June 18-22 and 24-29.

Salutations
Tribute shows are playing all over Laughlin this time of the year. Tonight and tomorrow (and June 24-29) there is a salute to country stars Gretchen Wilson, George Strait, Shania Twain, Charlie Daniels and Faith Hill, with talented performers taking turns to turn up the heat on hit tunes made famous by the celebrated originators. "Superstars of Country Music" is at Don’s Celebrity Theatre at the Riverside Resort. It all gets underway at 8pm. Tickets are $30. There’s a free-of-charge tribute to The Drifters at the Avi’s Arroweed Lounge tonight and tomorrow. The original group charted with nearly 20 hits including “Up On the Roof,”“There Goes My Baby,”“Save the Last Dance For Me” and “Under the Boardwalk.” The Avi show goes on from 7:30 past midnight.
Also, coming up July 2nd through the 6th is a tribute to Kiss, when "Kiss Army" invades the Riverside Resort.

SKYNNYR LYNNYRD PERFORMS TRIBUTE TO YOU-KNOW-WHO AT RIVERSIDE

Tuesday, July 29, 2008 4:47 PM PDT

Free Bird!”

There isn't a rock concert, garage band gig or roadhouse catfish bar where someone hasn't yelled out that request. And if you are a rocker worth your hair, it has to be part of your arsenal for you are measured on how well you can play that classic Lynyrd Skynyrd anthem.

“Free Bird!”

The yelled request has since become a standard joke but the music behind it hasn't. In fact, the Lynyrd Skynyrd sound and aura is going on as strong as ever.

The powerful combination of weirdly spelled words struck a nerve with rock fans in the late '60s, early '70s-particularly Southern rock fans who believe Ronnie Van Zant and his band mates defined a movement as well as music. Their distinctive three-lead-guitar trademark and edgy combination of country, southern blues and British rock left its indelible mark. Lynyrd Skynyrd is to rockers what Jimmy Buffet is to parrotheads and anthems like “Free Bird” and “Sweet Home Alabama” still resonate today.

With all the tragedy surrounding the original Lynyrd Skynyrd, it is only natural that other bands would come along and try to pay tribute to all things “Free Bird.” And so they have-with one such band going by its own set of weirdly spelled words-Skynnyn Lynnyrd-making its debut in Laughlin for shows in Don's Celebrity Theatre within the Riverside Resort on Wednesday, July 30, through Sunday, August 3.

STARSHIP STARRING MICKEY THOMAS IN
CONCERT AT TROPICANA EXPRESS
Mickey Thomas is the owner of the soaring voice that jet-propelled Jefferson Star-ship throughout the 80s. Heck, his soaring voice jet-propelled the Elvin Bishop Band to fame in 1976 with his compelling lead vocals on “Fooled Around and Fell in Love.” In both cases, it was Jefferson Starship and Elvin Bishop who were the recognizable names, not the man behind the voice, Mickey Thomas.

KID ROCK IN CONCERT WITH REHAB AT THE AQUARIUS OUTDOOR AMPHITHEATER
Kid Rock has spent as much time in supermarket tabloids as he has on the music charts. From skirmishes with Tommy Lee at the MTV Video Music Awards last year to an altercation at an Atlanta-area Waffle House, the skinny Detroit kid's antics and over-the-top personal life (with ex-wife Pamela Anderson) have often overshadowed his talents as a singer-rapper-songwriter.

DIERKS BENTLEY IN CONCERT AT HARRAH'S LAUGHLIN

Tuesday, March 31, 2009 5:30 PM PDT

Not so many years ago, Dierks Bentley was singing for tips in Nashville Second Avenue bars while soaking up country music history at his day job working in the video tape library of the former Nashville Network. Today, he's among the most successful and relevant country singers in the business.

They say Nashville doesn't work like this anymore-that talented artists with no connections don't stand a chance. But Bentley proved that Music City's engine still runs as a place for education, inspiration and validation.

Critics find him credible. Fans pack his shows. There are few new artists recording hits today that can say the same thing.

Bentley's kind of country has never been straight-up-the-middle. Instead, the Phoenix, Arizona native grew up on a potent hybrid of honky-tonk, bluegrass, singer/songwriters, classic country and modern rock and roll, forging his own sound along the way.

Incredible show!

BEACH BOYS IN CONCERT AT AQUARIUS

Thursday, May 7, 2009 10:53 AM PDT

With the “Weekend of Wheels” coming to town, the Aquarius has booked a classic band to match the classic cars. With a litany of car-themed songs, like “Fun, Fun, Fun (‘Til Daddy Took the T-Bird Away),”“Car Crazy Cutie,” and “Little Deuce Coupe,” The Beach Boys captured the spirit and feel of the Southern California car culture as much as they did the surf.

Still do.

The Beach Boys are still at it in the form of original member Mike Love and longtime member Bruce Johnston backed by a variety of relative newcomers. And for their shows at the Aquarius, one of those newcomers will be actor John Stamos who will sit in on drums.
