Lynne Goughler, you are absolutely correct. You may be one of the few people anymore who actually understands the purpose of the census. But I doubt that those who have been criticizing Rep. Bachmann care much about the true purpose of the census. Their hatred for her (and her worldview) is so visceral that smearing her is all that matters, even if they have to misrepresent what she says and why.

It is possible to disagree and criticize a person without hating them.

It takes a lot of energy to hate someone. I don't think Bachmann is worth the expenditure of energy it would take to hate her.

I'm just glad she doesn't represent my district.

And no matter what original reason there was for establishing the census, the fact is that it does ask for a person's race etc. SOMEONE must be collecting that data or they wouldn't be asking the questions.

I'm merely surprised that Representative Bachmann has finally realized there's a census. It's always been intrusive, there have always been concerns as to "why" some of the information is "required". I'm glad she's finally managed to stir herself and get an idea as to what the peasantry are faced with. I'm just sorry she and others of her ilk have finally become aware of it at this late date.

You go, girl.

“Are you serious?”

Eugene Chatelaine, you compare Ronald Reagan, a two term President's death to that of a JFK Jr. a spoiled playboy who's only claim to fame was his famous parents and to a child molester singer/dancer? You are clearly clueless!

I don't understand the lefties being in a tizzy over Bachmann's refusal to play along with the government intrusion they've labeled as the census (well, of course I really do, but you know).

I thought you lefties were all in full support of civil disobedience? She's doing a great service to her constituents by calling attention to this mockery and misuse of a constitutional provision. Thanks again, Michele!

When Bachmann reports the double digit number of persons in her household will she also include the voices in her head?

So, I am assuming that Rep. Bachmann chose to pay the $100 (or less) fine. I notice that, nowhere in this legislation do you find words like "shall be guilty of a misdemeanor," or anything similar. I agree that providing deliberately false answers should be punishable, and I notice that the fine for that behavior is substantially higher, as it should be.

The information you supplied is helpful, but if anyone is attempting to infer that Rep. Bachmann is now guilty of some sort of criminal act, well, hogwash.

I am the writer of the July 8th Franken article. And I would like to respond to Meg about Mr Franken. I would only be surprised if he acted civil for the next 6 years.
He is a dedicated liberal and YES he will promote the liberal agenda. This will certainly represent only half of this state. I am reminded of Nancy Pelosi's statement that "We WON!" when asked about her partisanship. The current administration is showing its inexperience and it is killing our economy. This is not good for MN nor AMERICA. Polls are already showing that people are waking up from the spell Obama put over them. Within the next few months the moonbats will be calling for change alright. Franken will only hasten this call.

The sad thing is that you're probably right with your "few monthes" timeline. The problems this country is facing are huge and complex and built up over a long time. But of course the American public wants them fixed Right NOW!! I wish people could grow up and be patient and give the guy a chance, ofr heavens sake. It might be years before some of these solutions take hold - and thats not a failure, it's just life. It would be the same for Republican fixes too.

I'm not sure the form has enough space for triple-digit figures. This may be a problem for Bachmann (R-Crazytown).

Elaine Volkert asks if "someone can tell me what government runs more efficiently than private business could"; she then goes on to list a fair number of items that government actually does run more efficiently than private business could, including the military, schools, social security and medicare. Of course, she fails to understand that there are no proposals for "government-run health care" on the table - none, zip. What is being proposed is a public option - a choice of public insurance - in addition to the choice of private insurance, for people who either cannot afford private insurance, or who are excluded from private coverage because of preexisting medical conditions. People who choose the public option would still be able to choose their providers - an option, by the way, that is not always available with private insurance, which may limit coverage to in-network providers.

I do live in the sixth district, but, she lost in the city in which I live, so, I don't have to feel too embarrassed by her. Frankly, as a member of the minority in Congress, she is fairly powerless right now, and she does serve as a great source of amusement.

Bob, they pretend to be 'pro-woman' as long as the woman in question obediently toes the liberal line. As soon as she has the audacity to speak for herself, it's open season. Liberals are bereft of gentlemen and awash with cads

It's not audacity; it's insanity. Bachmann is known around the world for her bizarre behavior. She is an embarrassment to this beautiful state.

When it comes to being known the world over for bizarre behavior and embarrassing Minnesota, Bachman's an amateur comparen to Frankentard. Franken is, after all, a professional fool.
