Merging with Westmoreland and Frick has been a disaster, This was supposed to be a merger of equals. The Westmoreland hegemony has hurt Latrobe in a number of service reductions and resources.
Latrobe Area Hospital was sold out by the prior administration receiving golden parachties. It could have maintained its autonomy with the support of the Foundation and the Mellons.

It would be impossible for Latrobe Hospital to have remained on it's own. Government reimbursement does not keep up with inflation, and the Affordable Care Act cut payments even more.

Unless a hospital is paid Rural hospital rates, it's very difficult to pay for all the things a 21st Century hospital needs, and stay autonomous.

But, don't blame the Administration. Regardless of what they may or may not have received due to the merger, it was the Board of Directors that made the decision. Administrators are only employees. Perhaps they influenced the decision, but they didn't have the power to make the decision.

You mean Latrobe Hospital could have remained an independent hospital if they had been willing to lose money and rely upon being supported by charitable organizations? Those charitable organizations would first have to want to prop up a losing business, and in today's healthcare environment that could cost a considerable amount of money.

Sorry, but that wasn't going to happen. It was either become part of a larger health network or go out of business. Even now, it's not looking very good for Excela. They're likely to be bought up by someone larger before too long.

The poor service of this Excela system almost cost my wife her life. If we would have listened to Excela she would be dead. We will only go to Indiana Regional from now on. They were fantastic!
And I know that Latrobe could have remained on it's own. I used to work there.

I wish they would have at least kept labor and recovery. Westmoreland is the worst hospital to have a baby at. Even worse, it's an 8-12 mile drive from Latrobe to greensburg... Some things should be kept local.

Has there been an uptick in babies being delivered on the side of the road by policemen, or in taxi cabs since they moved it?

Of course there hasn't. Why must you be such an a-hole to everyone on here? It was a comment about the services rendered at LAH. don't be a d1ck.

Jefferson Regional Medical Center, Butler Health System and Indiana Regional Medical Center, and Conemaugh have maintained their independence with thin operating margins
St. Clair Hospital, The Washington Hospital, Jameson Health System, Sharon Regional Medical Center and Monongahela Valley Hospital have done much better.

Latrobe had a few bad years and panic set in. It was like Jim Lee CEO of Gulf Oil selling out
to Chevron because of oil trader Slim Pickins!

From an IT perspective, Latrobe was far ahead of Westmoreland!

I think Doug Clark really though it was a merger of equals. However, that did not materialize!

What is "parachties"? What are they used for?

Golden parachute is an agreement between a company and an employee](usually upper executive) specifying that the employee will receive certain significant benefits if employment is terminated. Most definitions specify the employment termination is as a result of a merger or takeover.

Executives at Latrobe did quite well when Excela was created!
