Latrobe does NOT need another art collection, when kids in the school district don't eat breakfast before school, then are served head start cupcakes and cheap juice at school (parents too lazy to get up); people are hungry; elderly are isolated; just another STUPID idea by Latrobe's STUPID MD wives and attorney wives.

A foundation decides to donate towards something it sees as worthwhile. If you have a problem with it go earn millions of dollars and donate to a cause you deem worthwhile.

The Mellon Foundation was asked for the 1M by the new non-profit set up in Latrobe to promote the school district. Does a school district really need a non-profit to promote its well-being? Isn't that what the Superintendent is for? the PTA? the already existing organizations? the teachers? the administrators?

I suppose if kids left Latorbe and were able to think clearly and not use "younz" and double-negatives, and were able to multiply, add, subtract, and divide, I'd feel better about art.

Rural Latrobe does NOT need another art collection, but the Mellon Fund has money to burn, sooooo...a few MD wives and attorney wives now feel a lot better though.

I am asked for donations by numerous groups each year and I make a personal choice to donate to those that I feel deserve my support. The Mellon Foundation did the same. I do not bash the charity of others nor the choices they make in the giving of their money. They earned it and they can spend it as they choose. It is a shame you feel the need to bash those who have made a success of themselves.

That word "bash" is so SW PA.

I am not criticizing the Mellon Fund, you nimrod, I am criticizing the stupid need for a museum quality storage and display area for an unneeded art collection at the elementary school.

Latrobe's MD wives and attorney wives feel a lot better about themselves now that they've gotten the go ahead for a second useless art collection.

Why don't they start an art museum downtown, you know, in the GHOST TOWN of ol' Latrobe, and take the high school art collection there?

You know what's funny?

I studied art & architecture at the college level and I think this is all stupid, when kids don't have enough to eat locally and people are in need in serious ways in every age group in Latrobe.

But, let's hang cheap art at the high school and elementary school; that will sure make the dump of Latrobe seem a lot better off, right?

“That word "bash" is so SW PA.”
Given that we live in SW this would be called normal.

“I am not criticizing the Mellon Fund, you nimrod, I am criticizing the stupid need for a museum quality storage and display area for an unneeded art collection at the elementary school.”
Name calling is a great way to show your intellectual superiority

“Latrobe's MD wives and attorney wives feel a lot better about themselves now that they've gotten the go ahead for a second useless art collection.”
The art collection is used by various class within the school. Since it is used it is not useless.

“Why don't they start an art museum downtown, you know, in the GHOST TOWN of ol' Latrobe, and take the high school art collection there?”
Because it was started by high school teachers with the purpose of bring art into the school. Student Council purchased many of the pieces of art for the high school. It is school district property and belongs in the high school.

“You know what's funny?”
I do not

“I studied art & architecture at the college level and I think this is all stupid, when kids don't have enough to eat locally and people are in need in serious ways in every age group in Latrobe.”
Does the study of art and architecture at college give you the right to tell others where they should donate their money? School lunches and breakfast are free to those in need.

“But, let's hang cheap art at the high school and elementary school; that will sure make the dump of Latrobe seem a lot better off, right?”
Do you have a price list for the artwork to know it is cheap? I can’t answer your question as Latrobe is not a dump.

Really?

Could you explain what you by that?

Marie Antoinette Syndrome is a sudden whitening of the hair. The event that named the syndrome was the observation that the hair of unhappy and ill-fated Queen Marie Antoinette of France turned stark white the night before her execution in the French Revolution.

The reference was made to the comment Marie Antoinette made regarding the destitute people who had no bread to eat. She said, then let them eat cake. Do I need to further explain the correlation to this thread? I'm pretty sure one person got it.

I am a GLSD graduate, who never had a class about the art collection or any instruction about the art hanging on the walls. About 6 students from the senior class bought the "class painting" and that was it. The MD and attorney wives got a big -- blow up their skirts -- and they went home feeling that they were really useful in the area, when their husbands were the ones making the family continue on.

Latrobe is a dump; have you no eyes? have you never traveled to beautiful areas of the United States?

The art collection is worth $2,000,000. Why don't you find out how many paintings are in it? The collecting of art started in the 1930s, I think, so 1-painting a year was collected since then.

Let's see, that's about 80 paintings.

That's about $12,000 per painting, but who's actually doing the appraising? the insurance company? In that case, the paintings are worth an average of $1,200 each. Pumped up prices for insurance policies.

There's something weird about the focus on the art collection.

These MD and attorney wives could really be helping poor kids, yet they self-aggrandize with these STUPID projects to make "their kids" school district seem like a private school that they either 1) couldn't truly afford, or 2) couldn't get their kids into.

Why not put the money into another art teacher and more art classes?

Just saying...

Which will change students' lives:

1) cheap art hanging on the wall? or

2) several loving and talented art teacher?

No, I am expressing a philosophical opposition to spending $1,000,000 on yet another STUPID "decoration" for a town that's already failed, financially, and has a population of mostly poor people, in case you've not read the demographic information.

A second art collection is not what the school district needs.

How many students out of every graduating class, take a course that "uses" the art collection?

What's wrong with using the art collection at the Louvre? the Musee Dorsay?

Who in the hell wants to study the crap that Latrobe High school students purchases with the $600 that they raised? You know, the 6-rah rah yah yah students, who just love their high school life in Latrobe?

The world's greatest art collections are all on-line.

Who's really the backwards Latrobean, who doens't get that the greatest pieces of art are available for students all over the world -- via that old-fashioned technology called:

-----the Internet.

The problem with using the world's greatest pieces of art from the greatest collections, is that the teachers would have to understand these period pieces.

Stupid Latrobe, goes DUMBER even further with the $1,000,000 wasted from the Mellon Fund.
