local contractor

Hey, folks. If you incurred hail damage from the march 23 storm, the 6 month time limit is approaching to recover the replacement cost portion of your insurance claim. Many insurance companies will not release that portion until you are under contract for roof, gutter or siding replacement. Ask your neighbors for referrences of local contractors who have performed repairs to their houses, get an estimate and contact your insurance company. If not done in the time limit you will have to pay the difference out of your pocket for necessary repairs. Also if you settle for the actual cash value and do no replacement your insurance will not pay for future damages from another catastrophe. You generally have 2 years to make repairs, but the claim for replacement cost must be filed in the 6 month period.

I will tell you who not to use... Idiot company's workers tore a canvas awning, broke a dish tv receiver, broke a leaded glass window and destroyed my flower garden.

Right now we have Piper Brothers Construction working on our roof. Because of this extreme heat they are only working 1/2 days. They say that is for the safety of the guys as well as to keep the shingles from getting marked and scuffed after they get too hot. They are here at 6 am and out by 11. So far... their work is wonderful. All quality materials and so unbelievably careful and clean. They just finished the back of the house and asked for a clean rag... they just washed the gutters!!! They said they made a few marks on them (which I couldn't see), but they washed them off. No nails, no shingles strewn, no garbage...nothing anywhere! After we contracted with them... we only waited a month for them to come back and start the job. So far we are very pleased.

I forgot to mention that you deal with a white guy through the whole process.... Then a bunch of Hispanics show up and toss crp all over you yard. I've been taking photos of everything they have left behind, including some huge metal like hinge sitting in my flowers.

OMG Andrea...Paff is one of the first I passed up on the assessment/bid level. Their sales guy, Steve, was personable enough and great at his job but...

After a bit of research, I passed on Paff!

If you can go back to the roofing threads, I posted comments there. I felt something was shadey with them. AND, they were twice as high as any other quote even using the same Xactimate (or whatever it's called) software used by my insurance company. I checked both line by line.

I had too many questions that got "smoothed over" without actual answers and it raised the hairs on the back of my neck. I tried to give out the info, sorry if you didn't read it!!!

Aspen and Olde Glory have been doing work in our neighborhood. So far... everybody seems pleased. A friend is thinking of going with Aspen... I really would rather people go with our locals. She said Aspen says their workers get W-2's so they are legit and also they have a Jeannette office. I told her to ask how long they were in that Jeannette office and how long they plan to be there. Curious to see what the future holds. I don't want to see anybody's money wasted.

I didnt read it. The thing is, my daughter used Paff with no issues. So I figured they would good. But, I have about 20 photos of various damages done in and around my property that prove otherwise.

What does the workers being Hispanic have to do with anything? A bunch of white guys could have done the exact same thing. Would you have complained as much then?

For what it's worth, I am having Aspen do my roof. I've talked to the salesperson several times and have tried to find holes in their claims, materails used, methods, and follow-up if something happens (like a leak) after they are done.

Other than using non-English speaking workers, I can't find anything wrong with the company. They worked on other homes that I have seen. The work is well supervised and I have seen/heard no horror stories like ArtGals.

Local contractors are not suffering from a lack of work, so I'm not feeling guilty about that. And any contractor, local or otherwise can screw you over after the job is done. Even big names like ROTO-ROOTER for plumbing to name just one I'd never call again. I once used a local independent contractor for a big job. He took his time and seemed to be doing a good job. About a year later when water started coming in through the walls from the bathroom he did, I called him only to find he wasn't in business anymore. Luckily for me Erie Insurance put him back into the business of paying for his mistake.

All I can be sure of is that you can't be 100% sure of anybody to do a good job. Unless you want to do it yourself...but there is that learning curve.

I complained when I worked with a company who sent all mexicans because when they messed up they didn't understand my english. Maybe that is what she is complaining about.

So, if you're upset enough, why not just call their English speaking supervisor?

Roofer, I am entitled to be a little upset by the fact that the crew they sent me had no way of communicating with me regarding the fact that they broke my DirectTV dish, my window and my canvas awning. I tried to call the supervisor and kept getting his voicemail. Finally, after hours, he returned my call. So, if you are a company and you are doing business, be honest. Tell your customer that you are going to subcontract out to a bunch of Hispanics. I wouldn't have been half upset if he would have just been up front with me.
