Geez...can't there be ONE thread in this Forum that doesn't have bickering in it.

Back to the topic at hand...it doesn't appear the Blue Angels will be at this air show??? Did I miss something? Also, until I glanced through the article, it hadn't occured to me at all that these air shows had stopped due to 9/11! It makes one wonder how many other things were affected that we don't even consider?

I'm just glad to see they're back!

Agreed Blech - it went astray when Redneck stepped in - I remember the air shows from when I was younger. Were the blue angels here?..or am I remembering that from another place in my life.

The thread could have been interesting but the first smartass reply by Redneck doomed it from the start. Then a few airshow replies, then he must go on and on about how he so smart and how stupid everyone else must be, then a little nuzzling up with Renee and here we are. You are correct, every topic turns to shit.

Isn't He the superior one preaching down to the rest of us about that very thing?

If he replies to this I already know what he will say, so predictable.

Anyone remember the Airshows in the mid '70's when the Blue Angels were allowed to fly everywhere during practice? Flying over Latrobe low and fast shaking buildings and homes and even broke a few windows in town. Loud as hell too. Loved it!

Redneck is evil?

Andrea is Renee?

Renee is Cybil?

Does that mean Cybil blows Jagger?

Yes, Latrobe used to host the "Blue Angels" and that was a spectacular event for little Latrobe. I took my mum in 1998, and we had the best time, and I have fabulous -- black and white -- photos of her in a straw sunhat, in a lace shirt, with the wrinkles of her then, 80-year-old face opposing the other textures.

Redneck, this is funny.'Hope my "big fish small pond" remark didn't bother you. You know I love your writing style and wit.
I read every post as if the writer has a little smile on his/her face and is givng a little nudge with an elbow. But when a poster becomes very descriptive and terse with derogatory comments and sarcasm, then I take it a bit more seriously. It all depends on the past performance of the poster also. Some are worthy of more merit than others, but for the most part as in the case of the recent banal challenges...well...I'm not getting too concerned about it.

The approach to the runway is right over my house, and they'd fly so low, I swear, they'd brush the tops of trees...

Yes, it just goes to show how insecure and predictable the majority of posters in here are...one little comment about airheads and the natives get enraged. And people think FWR needs counciling...

But I guess you knew that already since you knew what I was going to post.

Is that a Zen thing?

I don't know if this is true, but I heard that was the reason that the Blue Angels didn't return. Their routines were too low for this area. I remember one of the planes banking above my house. I could see the pilots helmet and inside the cockpit.

The Thunderbirds had a more compatible show for the area that had the option for a high or low set of maneuvers. Cloud ceilings and topography influenced what they did.

There was also a scheduled appearance from Canada's Snowbirds, but it got cancelled when one of the pilots was killed in a car wreck coming from a party at Rolling Rock.

Those pilots are fearless! I was always amazed to see the show, albeit at the Moline, IL airport, very similar to Westomoreland's. I'm actually surprised there aren't direct flights since Arnie used to go to the Classic there...I think it was once called the Ed McMahon Classic??? Tiger even played that course in '95-ish era.

Unreal a pilot was taken out by a local (or took himself out???)...what a waste of talent! What year was that Red???

The airshow will be great yet, still not the same without the top guns!!!

I think it was in 1988. The pilots name was:
Capt. Wes Mackay,#8, Lead Solo,
killed in a motorcycle accident after an
air show in Latrobe, Pennsylvania,
1988, age 28.

I think he hit a tree on the way out of Rolling Rock club where they were the special guests at a dinner party. I don't think alcohol played into it as much as his unfamiliarity with the road where it happened.

Their performances were then cancelled.

It wasn't a motorcycle, it was a small white car. Hit a tree. High speed.

It happened after the show, so it wasn't canceled.

Thanks for the info! I wasn't thinking alchohol would be involved in the crash...those pilots most likely aren't alchys, needing precision that most of us could only dream about! What a shame though...what a waste!

As an aside though, he probably saw 5th Ward Resident at the club and got out as fast as he could! No wonder he was driving too fast! Can't blame the lad!

I wasn't sure about the vehicle. I cut and pasted what I found on a search. But I'm pretty sure the 2nd day's (Sunday) show was cancelled.

I did not move here untill October of 2000 and I watched several BLue Angel airshows at Latrobe airport from the grassy knowell in wimerton, so I believe your dates are off. Just my 2 cents.
