Israeli Troops Kill 2 Palestinians in Nakba Clash
RAMALLAH, West Bank May 15, 2014 (AP)
By MOHAMMED DARAGHMEH Associated Press
Associated Press

Israeli troops shot dead two Palestinian teens in a West Bank clash that erupted Thursday after Palestinians marked their uprooting during the Mideast war over Israel's 1948 creation, a doctor said.

Three Palestinians were wounded, one seriously, when Israeli troops fired to disperse stone throwers near an Israeli military checkpoint in the West Bank, said Dr. Samir Saliba, head of the emergency department at Ramallah Hospital.

Saliba said those killed were 15 and 17 years old and were shot by live rounds in the chest. The seriously wounded protester was also shot in the upper body, he said.

Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said troops broke up a "disturbance" in the area, but did not use live fire.

The Israeli army, which also was present, said security forces attempted to disperse a demonstration of about 150 protesters with "riot dispersal means and rubber bullets." It said it was still investigating.

The clash came just hours after Palestinians marched in the West Bank and Gaza Strip to commemorate their displacement in the Mideast war over Israel's 1948 creation.

THIS IS A PRIME EXAMPLE OF A FORMER "ETHICAL" ISRAELI PRIME MINISTER

Ehud Olmert sentenced to six years in Israel
Israel's former prime minister becomes first to receive prison sentence

By Robert Tait, Jerusalem

3:00PM BST 13 May 2014

Ehud Olmert, the former Israeli prime minister, was given a six-year jail sentence on Tuesday for accepting bribes in a property deal that the presiding judge said made him tantamount to a “traitor”.

It was the first time in Israel’s 66-year history that an ex-premier had ever received a prison term and came after a long corruption probe that had transfixed a nation long inured to political graft.

The allegations against Olmert, prime minister between 2006 and 2009, concerned a block of flats known as the “Holyland” built in Jerusalem’s southern suburbs while he was the city’s mayor more than a decade ago.

The complex, featuring residential properties in a stilt-like structure on a prominent hillside, has become infamous as one of Jerusalem’s ugliest landmarks.

A court in Tel Aviv last month convicted the former prime minister of accepting bribes of more than £96,000 to facilitate the development

Arab-Israeli jailed in Egypt to Netanyahu: If I were Jewish, you would fight for me

By YASSER OKBI, JPOST.COM STAFF
05/15/2014 18:44

Ouda Tarabin, a Beduin serving a 15-year sentence on charges of spying for Israel, accuses Netanyahu, Israeli gov't of discrimination, racism.

Ouda Tarabin, an Israeli Beduin jailed in Egypt for the last 14 years, wrote a letter to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu this week slamming his government as racist for failing to successfully intervene on his behalf.

"I am Ouda Tarabin, an Israeli citizen, and your government forgot me in an Egyptian prison, where I'm being held for no reason. Had I been Jewish or Druse, you would have fought for me," Tarabin wrote. "Unfortunately neither you nor your government took care of me because I'm an Arab."

Israeli president says Netanyahu torpedoed peace deal

Shimon Peres says two-state solution was agreed before it was ‘ended’ by Netanyahu

LAST UPDATED AT 12:51 ON Wed 7 May 2014

ISRAELI president Shimon Peres said on Tuesday that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu deliberately destroyed a peace deal that had been reached covertly with the Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in 2011.

In an interview with Israel’s Channel 2 news, Peres said that “almost all issues” had been resolved in a series of secret meetings held in Jordan.

As the deal approached completion, Peres said that Netanyahu told him to wait three or four days for a better deal to come along, The Times of Israel reports.

What does it say about Israeli society and the system of government when a prime minister is convicted of taking bribes?

There will always be a few rotten apples. But the Holyland case, and many other instances of bribery at the upper echelon, show us that the corruption spreading in the government is part of the system that allows politics to control the economy.

Former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert had partners: mayors, city council members, the city engineers, cohorts on the planning committees and wheelers and dealers. But Holyland isn't alone at the top. Every day, incidences of destructive corruption in the public and private sectors are discovered, from IDB and Hadassah to many municipalities and even the Keren Kayemet and the military chief of staff (all allegations, of course).

Corruption has become a national plague, an integral part of the Israeli regime of concentrated power. Knesset members and the government bureaucracy have gathered immense economic power. They gouge most of the population for taxes while exempting their cronies. They grant the inner circle monopolistic rights worth billions.

There are a few honest people among them, but is there any chance that anyone from that crop won't become infested, that an open door won't tempt thieves? Certain politicians and bureaucrats and their friends who serve the tycoons allow them and their huge companies to steal billions from hundreds of thousands of families who can barely stretch their budgets to the end of the month.

Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.
A list of "pigocks" ("havasim" in Hebrew, a play on the words for "pig" and "peacock") was recently published that included many former senior figures in the Treasury and the Bank of Israel. In exchange for bloated salaries and millions of shekels in bonuses, they "manage" the tycoons' monopolies. To their discredit, they help tycoons wring all sorts of benefits out of the government, all sorts of privileges and monopolistic rights that squeeze the public, especially low-income citizens, out of billions by setting inflated prices. They receive giant salaries, even if they are the failing directors of businesses that earn profits only by exploiting the public.
