My husband and I just moved here from California and we always talk about how we miss trader joe's. Our family has been shipping us food from there because we love it so much:) Hurry up!!!

Gabriela (beautiful name btw), Albuquerque is 3 hours to the north, that's the nearest TJ's to here.
When I'm in Albuquerque, I make it a point to stop there and stock up.

Guess it's the best we can do at this point...

Can't get a Costco. Can't get a Trader Joe's, but we can get all the Wal-Marts they find room to build.

What about El Paso?

They'd build in El Paso long before they'd build here. Just not enough people here, not worth it to them.
But Pro's Ranch IS coming on El Paseo, that may give the place a shot in the arm. I went to the EP store, lots of great stuff. Not the same as TJ's or Whole Paycheck, but definitely not Albertsons.

Hey, We got Toucan's Market.

Pretty damn fine store. Maybe not as good as Trader Joe's, but the quality is just about there.

Great meat. Nice vegetables. Hard to find items. Organics.

Well worth a visit.

You're right armando, nobody is interested in Trader Joe's or what plans, if any, the company has here.(please note sarcasm)

Not only would LC welcome a Trader Joe's. Ruidoso,
Alamo, and El Paso would come to it. I hope they change their two year plan and include us in it.

I would venture to say that El Paso has even less of a chance of seeing a Trader Joe's in their near future. Think of the target demographic, and then think of the sort of people who live in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, which is even smaller than Las Cruces.

They are just being polite when they say be patient. LC doesn't have the demographic or population to support a Trader Joe's.

If they said Trader Joes is opening, they yes...a story about it makes sense. Because I am one who wants a Trader Joes (and a World Market would be nice). But a story to tell us its not coming? Excuse me, but was there a big discussion about this in the papers for the last several years that I missed? Has the city councel been discussing it? Are people and other businesses begging for Trader Joes publicly? If the answer is yes, great, the article makes sense. But if the answer is no, which I believe to be true, then someone calling trader joes and making a 'story' of it, what a waste of space.

I wonder if it is just a simple geography issue, rather than demographic issue, that makes any grocery store, much less a specialty grocery store, decide whether to come to the area or not. Simply put, we may just be far enough away from distribution centers (I'm thinking Phoenix, Albuquerque, and Dallas) that the El Paso/Las Cruces market suffers. After all, there seems to be a lack of regional grocery stores in the region - Smith's, Safeway, Osco, etc. used to be in the area then left.

My initial thought is that we are just far enough away from distribution centers that many companies don't enter the market.

I was happy to see this story, and a previous one about Pro's coming to Cruces. As a former resident back in the 80s, now thinking of returning for retirement, Las Cruces could use some better grocery stores. Not everyone wants to buy groceries at Walmart. I was in Cruces last winter for a few months and went in the Albertsons up near Elk's Drive. It was terrible. The fish and meat department reeked, store was dirty, and product selections were just not that great. Maybe other Albertsons there are better but I didn't bother to find out. Las Cruces deserves better supermarkets.

I hope we never see a Trader Joe's. One more reason for the folks who move here and whine about how good it was "back where we came from" not to come. Need a Trader Joe's, fifty Starbucks, ten southern edge retro-Szechwan restaurants???? Go live in the big city.
