I would like to make certain that a veteran on Dona Ana county receives the recognition that he deserves and the family of WW II veteran S/Sgt. Tony T. Hernandez of Mesquite, NM know that he died in battle n service to is country. JR Turner is working on getting the Death Non-Battle designation changed at the war memorial. But I'm uncertain that his family knew that he died aboard a B-17 bomber named the Whale Tail II. Tony was a gunner and radio operator and married to Mary Hernandez of Mesquite. If anyone knows of a family member please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org. S/Sgt Hernandez was awarded the Purple Heart and Air Medal. I want to make certain that his family recieved them.
Nearly four years later and I'm still searching for family members, but I do know a bit more than I did four years ago. In 1940 I believe that Tony was living in Dawson, NM Colfax county with his parents, Juan and Mercedes and siblings Anastacio, Elvira, Josephine, Jesus and Manuel. His father and older brother had worked in the mines. Tony married and moved to Mesquite sometime after graduating high school. But since the family wasn't from Dona Ana county, that explains why the desgination of Death non-battle wasn't corrected. So if anyone knows of any of these relatives it would be helpful. Anastactio died in 1967 and is buried at the national cemetery in Sante Fe.
