Don't kill the dog... Slap the owner in prison for five plus years. Maybe then they will learn their lesson. This kind of stupidity happens far too often. Why? Because they get a lap on the wrist and the one who suffers is the one bitten.

There should also be a law that if owners train their dogs to become vicious, that it would be against the law.

Change story title to: "Responsibility nowhere to be found in child mauling."

Why don't they just euthanize the owner!?!?! That would be more useful!
Man, people like that make me VERY VERY mad! They take these big scary dogs so they can be "cool", and so they can show off in front of their buddies and then once the dog bites someone, they just say "Ooops" and kill the dog! And a couple of weeks later they just go get a new one!
I think there should be some law that when you take in a big dog, you are obligated to take him to obedience classes. I'll bet anything that the guy just took the dog, and then made it bark or scare his friends, just to show them how "cool" he is! And now people are surprised that the dog bit somebody!
If the dog was properly trained, that would never have happened!
Because of dumbass people like that there are so many homeless pitbulls, staffs, etc. They should impose some rules for adoptions of these dogs. That way only people who really want the dog and are responsible enough, will go through the trouble of adopting...

I agree 1000% with all that you have said. Let's push for new laws protecting the bite victim, and penalizing the owner!

I agree with having stricter laws in regards to willfully negligent pet owners, however, I think some forethought should come into place before automatically accussing pet owners of being willfully negligent. The type of breed does not mean that are automatically aggressive such as in this case. Every animal, like humans, have their own personality. Some people are just down right mean, just like animals. And in those situations, a good owner can have a dog that has a bad personality and snaps. Owners can't always predict what a dog will do. Then there are the people who actually train their dogs to be mean, THAT is willfully negligent. Or if an owner knows the dog has the propensity for having aggression issues, this would be negligent if the owner does nothing to correct the situation. I have a Rottie, a very docile dog. I have had people think he is mean just by his looks and the stereo types given the breed. However, after having been around him, several people have asked if I would sell him. I have also seen owners with pits, that have been very social with humans, dogs and CATS.. who'd know. IMHO, it's not necessarily the breed, but the personality of the dog. And it's the owners responsiblity to socialize their dog, and perhaps, even tho hard to do, euthenize a pet that has the makings for a dangerous situation.

Fred, " look yourself in the mirror and honestly see your mistakes before you wish other to rot in jail...shouldn't you be doing life in prison already...have you not caused enough pain to people? yes, the owners of the dog should be charged but you should be the last person in earth asking for that punishment.

True... but Rotties are not "big scary dogs." Every one of my Rotties have been the sweetest dogs ever. They are "big" but their PR is pure "scary." Last time I saw an article on dog attacks, the dog was a Golden Retriever mix, but because it wasn't one of the "black dogs of death" (AKA: German Shephards, Dobermans, Pitbulls, or Rottweilers)it got little coverage, even though that child died.

Rotties are stubborn, clingy, loveable dogs who need a strong hand to guide them and definitely need training because of bad press like this.

The owner should definitely be penalized heavily for animal abuse and tossed in the clink for a long stretch.

Just like vicious children, owners / parents are to be held responsible for their charges actions. Mexicans and blacks are the worst offenders, not to mention all the white trash.
