Over the last year, I made a choice to wait until I got a good job with benefits to buy health insurance. It ended up costing me as I had an emergency appendectomy in March and was not covered with benefits until October. Now I am stuck with a $20k tab that I plan to pay. This guy probably received thousands of dollars worth of care but I bet he doesn't get calls from collections a couple times a month. The difference in us? I long ago made a choice to work for a relatively low income in public service while he chose to chase the riches by smuggling cocaine.

From what I saw while living in the area, the Headlight hired people that weren't motivated to get better jobs in Las Cruces or higher paying jobs with the drug cartels. And that was if they could pass the drug test to get hired.

As far as the literacy of their workers: illiterate high school graduates is a state wide issue in New Mexico - if the students graduate at all.

COACH.....You have every right to be angry, I would be too.

One question here....Does Palomas have anything like a hospital or a care facility at all ? Unless this man's elbow was completely shattered, and no help available elsewhere, then why did he have to be airlifted to El Paso ? And where were the Palomas police/officials when this happened ? No mention of them being around at all.

I'm not against helping our fellow man, so to speak, but lately bringing people from Palomas across to our side for treatment's getting a bit out of hand, especially over the last few weeks, and yes, I know it's been going on for a long time , but with things changing all over, economically speaking, we have to change too.

I doubt things will change anytime in the near future, we'll still lend a helping hand, but when are we going to draw the line here ? Sometimes I think we, in the U.S.A. are too kind, if that's possible. We're so careful not to offend, and we try so hard to do the right thing most of the time, not be too rough on people and their rights. We try to say the right thing so we won't be deemed as being a bad person or country, always trying to be fair, at least most of the time. Maybe that's why so many want to live here, the land of the free. But it's getting not to be that way anymore, nothing's free........it costing us something more and more.

What's that saying ? Nice guys finish last !!!

former Deming resident......You're so right when you said "if the students graduate at all"

About 10 yrs. ago, we hired someone to do some grading upon first moving here. This man had been living in Deming for quite awhile, was, and still is, very much involved in community affairs. One thing he said to us that I won't forget was about the young people in Deming. It's hard to keep them in school past the 8th grade, there's a big drop out rate. That was 10 yrs. ago and I'm wondering if the situation's any better. We don't have children in school here so not up to date as to whether things have improved in that aspect, sure hope so.

As of about 3.5 years ago,the situation was as you (and I) described.

And I heard various store managers in Deming complain privately that about three out of four applicants that they would have hired (no criminal background including DWI, a high school graduate or with a GED, or in high school full time for the low level McJobs) couldn't get past the drug test. The failed-the-drug-test issue isn't only Deming's problem, though = it's apparently common throughout New Mexico. I've heard such comments from business owners in Las Cruces and Socorro (NM), too. Yet these employers refuse to even give an interview to older workers who stay sober because they've grown up and want to gain any employability edge they can. Oh well, the employers get what they refuse to pay for.

BTW, my location as note by Topix has changed due to a change in my ISP hookup.
