"To keep the town budget from going into arrears, town employees haven't worked a 40-hour workweek in two years"

well, maybe *officially* anyway...hehehe

You got what you deserve butt-wipes. I deliberately avoid this sphincter of a town because in my 34-years of driving the only ticket on my record is for speeding past San Andreas HS at lunchtime at 25 mph.

Maybe ole Tom Hutchinson will donate a month's worth of profits to help out the Town of Mesilla?
Hutchinson loves to parade what LaPosta has done, what he's done, blah, blah, blah.
Reality is this: Ole Right Winger Tom never steps up to the checkbook unless there's a direct tie back to his mirror.
There's several reasons he is one of the most disliked businesspeople in Mesilla.
Too bad for his wonderful wife, who is the direct tie to the founders of LaPosta...not this carpetbagger Tom.
So, step up to the plate, Tom. Let's see your check to help our community.

They are still being overpaid. Mesilla hires the most under-qualified people and the worst scammers in the state. Take a good look at the public works director and her lackey public works foreman.....talk about overpaid. And Fuentes??? What a joke. He's a heck of a good brown noser, but that's about it.

You need to spend money to make money, especially in a tough economy. Also, the last two years of the Cadena circus hasn't helped matters either.

Mesilla needs some top notch management and marketing people with no DUEEES to find and bring the limited discretionary dollars to their quaint, beautiful little town.

While I don't think the Cadena misadventures have any real effect on the economy of Mesilla, I completely agree with the essence of your post.
A town that derives most of it's operating funds from GRT revenue needs to do more to promote and permit the success of Mesilla businesses. While there certainly is some grt income from other sources, those businesses that are simpatico with TOURISM provide the lions share of tax revenue.
Tourism is as legitimate a business model for the town as agriculture, brings in a lot more money (taxes, wages, other income) than pecans and onions, and keeps taxes for residents LOW. Mesilla residents don't realize how tourism based revenue keeps their taxes down....it's a sweet deal for residents and property owners and they're largely ignorant of it.
A lot of the tourism efforts of the Town of Mesilla are amateurish and unimaginative. A lot more could be done and done easily.
