Their View: In defense of a life without gadgets

Mr. Williams, great article that points out the absolute and dumb obessions by the "me" generations. I applaud your attempts to maintain control of your life and actually do some meaningful things that you like.
I have a simple, old fashioned cell phone which I use to make phone calls.........and that's it. I work as a volunteer rescuing and re-homing animals, which gives me great satisfaction and a sense of purpose. People who waste their lives and money texting, sexting, downloading this and that, are engaging in acts of futility and boredom.

Reading thru the story, made me realize that.
Youre not married,
You have no children
You are a person who can quit in the middle of something (maybe it was to hard for you)
You could never work for my company because we rely on Computers and Cell Phones
And he does have a computer. With that he can watch movies, text people, make phone calls. No-where did I read that he has NO computer.
If you are savy and frugal you can do all of that (traveling, saving money) and have a phone, ipad, TV.
I think its a bit over the top.

Your approach is too extreme in the "don't need" direction. No two people have needs that are the same. I believe that the answer lies between in "everything in moderation".
But you do have some good points.

How sad! If one has those technological devices & learns how to use them even more freedoms abound. Nothing says that having them will automatically make you crazy. For example: I am currently traveling in Alaska on a dream vacation. Each day I read the LC Sun-News on my iPad. Without it I would have never known about Mr. Williams' ridiculous position. So, am I better off for having read his goofy opinion? Additionally, w/o my iPad, how could I keep up with the remarkable efforts of frequent Topix contributors such as Michael Hays and PlacitasRoy who try diligently to "educate" those of us who are unable to think so clearly as they. I use my iPad to send Email messages along with digital pictures to my family & friends as we travel. Did I say "digital" pictures? My lovely wife has her own iPad! Our lives have definitely been enriched for having them. Contrary to Mr. Williams' position, I can't imagine life w/o my computers, iPads, cell phones, digital camera, etc. etc. I have, however, learned to manage w/o buggy whips, hand cranks, hand written letters, bills paid by mail, banking by going into a bank...the list goes on.

I still curse the day Alexander Graham Bell was born.
Watson, is that you?
Get off the phone, I'm trying to make a call.
The jury, however, is still out on Thomas Alva Edison.
