I see Rob Peterson finally signed his own name to the letter to the editor instead of claiming to be "J.R.Stewart, FOP President" like he has in the last few letters submitted to the news papers. Sounds like Officer Peterson needs to review the job postings as well and find a new career.

Mr. Peterson, just because I believe that the police department could and should do better does not mean I hate them. Are you always this simple minded?

I have the constitutional right to speak my opinion on anything, just because you don't like it, is irrelevant and not my concern.

As for your statement that I believe I am a physician, a really dumb thing to say since we both know that I'm not. But $80,000 worth of medical bills tells me that he apparently had some extensive injuries. I consider a broken arm to be serious, but apparently, you don't.

As for the profanity, "bitch", I have heard much worse, and it is my understanding that the woman in question did not even hear it because she was too far away.

Violating Mr. York's freedom of speech and expression is not one of the duties of police officers anywhere.

As for my being safe and secure, I take care of myself, Mr. Peterson, and it is not the result of police work.

Mr. Peterson's letter is evidence of the lcpd attitude towards the first amendment: its only okay when "they" engage in free speech, all others' statements are subject to their approval. Case in point: the municipal judges critize the cops in a confidential letter made public by the city administration, the cops in return refuse to file cases in the municipal court because the judges are the only ones apparently reviewing their (police) actions. When is the city administration going to stop letting the "tail wag the dog"?

Evelyn, I'm just curious: Do you actually work for a living, or is your main reason in life to be a know-it-all, right-wing hypocrite?
Get a job, hobby or a life, madam. We're all sick of you.

Mr. Peterson is neither law and order, nor for justice. The court, not just Donald Appleton and Evelyn Hancock, has already ruled that Mr. York's words were private ones, not a public nuisance. Peterson does not like the facts established in court, so he changes them; thus, he asserts that the Mr. York's remarks were not addressed to himself in his car but were "profanity" screamed "at a woman." Peterson does not like and refuses to accept the court's ruling, so he attacks the writers of a letter which criticizes the arresting officer's misconduct. Peterson also shows total ignorance of police work when he asserts that "the majority of police work today is dealing with morals, or a lack thereof." Really? Everyone else believes that police work is dealing with laws by enforcing them.(So a professional would appreciate the court's ruling as defining the limits of the law to be enforced.) Worse, he assumes that it is all about moral vigilantism, with officers entitled to rough up anyone because they do not like their private conduct. I may not like overhearing vulgar language--and I have heard policemen on duty use it (when I do, should I make a citizen's arrest?)--and I may think it wrong, but it is not illegal as a mere expletive. Mr. Peterson snidely comments on those safe and secure in their homes; well, of course: who can feel safe and secure on the streets with policemen acting like thugs?

Ask the eighty year old picacho hills woman with a bullet in her head how safe she is in her home. Glad the city is promoting a "safer" city with the assistance of LCPD.

Actually Evelyn, if you did know him you would know that he IS that simple minded. Anyone who speaks against LCPD will be attacked because that's what they do (good ol' "NMFAN" proves it)- no one in that building or at City Hall for that matter, is willing to see that the egos and good ol' boys over there will never allow an ethical and well-run police force in Las Cruces. They all take care of themselves and cover for the poorly managed administration because they are learning and getting it from the top! I'm not saying there aren't a very few good ones over there, but they are silenced by the rest of them. Citizen Advocate's question about the tail wagging the dog is right on point but it will never be fixed as long as the politicos at city hall keep themselves in the dark and don't see everything that's going on for what it really is - the LCPD and City Management refusing to do things the way the criminal justice system and laws intended them to - ethically!

What's the matter, you don't like constitutional rights? Apparently not! What this country is tired of is people like you!

I just love the short answers from NMFAN and buenogirl. They are entirely devoid of anything civil or rational. From NMFAN, only a personal attack; from buenogirl, one unexplained episode (suicide remains a possibility). Any person with sense and smarts could do better, but it would mean having to respect others and use facts and logic.

I am not sure, as Tracey is, about the proportion of good to bad officers, but I am sure that (1) the bad ones make it more difficult for the good ones, and (2) the bad ones cause trouble and cost the city money. A civilian review board could help bad officers become better and save taxpayers a lot of money.

Ummm...let's see. Picacho Hills. Last I heard that was in the County, not the City. so that's irrelevant. As for the rest of you, at least Officer Peterson and the rest of the officers are out there risking their lives to save your pathetic little lives (why I don't know!!). It's really easy for you all to sit back and criticize, but how many of you have actually gone on ride-alongs to see what these people have to endure day in and day out? I'm betting none. And holy cow...if I have to hear another on e of you liberal yahoos talk about civil rights I'm gonna puke. Most of the men and women who serve on our police force are prior military and have served to protect your petty little souls so you can sit back and criticize them. What a bunch of whiney little embicils you all are. Go back to watching soap operas and keep your mouths shut!!

If you, like many of us, ever have your civil rights violated, you WILL indeed puke! Las Cruces has a reputation for abusing the civil rights of both the guilty and the innocent. Have you ever sat in a trial and been made aware of the continued violation of civil rights? The Deputy DA runs the courts like there are no such things as civil rights! Just look into her appeals record to see how many violations have occurred. YOU need to know what you are talking about before you criticize others opinions!

OMG...another civil rights activist. What have you done for me lately is the rhetoric that constantly comes out of your mouths at the sacrifices of others. No wonder our country is so screwed up. You all routinely refer to the Constitution whenever you don't get your way and if it doesn't fit your situation, all you need to do is find an attorney who will twist the interpretation to fit. Our founding fathers are rolling in their graves because of the way it has been bastardized. The Constitution does not apply today because people have no honor or honesty and it was written in a time when men and women had both. As Evelyn clearly states above...it's MY constitutional right to criticize whoever and whatever I want...RIGHT?!!!!! You're in Austin anyway, so deal with your own problems. I'm sure rights are being violated deep in the heart of Texas too (riiiigggghhhhttt)

Well Stated! I am sure you are aware that the DA and deputy DA ARE ATTORNEYS! The twisting of the truth is exactly what the District Attorney's office does in an attempt to boost their tally of convictions. Sounds like you are content with the broken courts system. But still, I challenge you to look into how many times Deputy District Attorney, Susan Riedel has been chastised before the State Supreme Court. Furthermore, look at how many of her cases have be remanded or dismissed because she blatantly violated people's constitutional rights in a zealous attempt to "WIN" in court.

Hey, dummy, the cops had their immunity taken away by the appeals court in Denver because they violated Mr. York's constitutional rights. Why don't you get your head our of your backside, if you can find it, and learn something about the constitution before opening that large hole over your chin.

Stupid is as Stupid does, right?
