The fatalities have now jumped to 4 and one may not make it. The news this morning gave a little more information regarding this horrific accident. I also know a fireman that responded to this accident, it was caused by two of the vehicles racing down hwy 70. This crash was caused by speeding, we can now put this argument to rest.

My thoughts and prayers go out to all the victims families and friends as well as all the medical personnel (fire, police, and medical) who were there. This will truly affect the lives of everyone involved.

How incredibly sad. I drove past the wreckage out of LC and could not believe my eyes. I was involved in a hit & run rollover accident in November where the person who hit me fled the scene. I dont know how I got out of it alive, and seeing this makes me realize even more how everything can change - for anyone - for everyone in the blink of an eye. Lord please find these souls at peace and hopefully others will join me in keepin the families in their thoughts & prayers.

Thank you for sharing this information!

For all of you freaks out there who speed and/or drive selfishly, go swallow a bullet. This is absolutely horrible! Racing down the highway? Wow... Was it really worth it? It is a tragedy that anybody died, but hopefully the deceased are the drivers who were racing. How tragic.

this must have been really bad. i've heard from several people that it was totally traumatizing. my heart goes out to the family and friends that this has affected. so sad.
Yes it was very bad. My 12 year old started crying as we passed by on the way home from the movies. It's very hard to explain that "these things happen" to a kid. I was very sure that everyone had died. My best thoughts to the families of those involved.

I have lived in Las Cruces for years and cannot remember a time when I saw anything more horrifying! The vehicles looked like huge pieces of mangled metal. There was no way to tell what they even were. Prayers to all of the families involved. Prayers to all of the emergency personnel that worked this horrific accident. GOD BLESS!

The Sun News weekend coverage is next to nothing.

I come home past the Mesa Grande Entrance Westbound every night about 3:45. There are close calls and accidents there just about every day. Everyday the kids come whipping up the ramp and then slow to a crawl when they run out of merge lane. Or they pass the slower merging car in front of them as they are both trying to merge. And of course they get off at Sonoma... Just stay on the frontage road.

I was involved in two accidents last year, both the fault of young males going at excessive rates of speed. One of the incidents was a hit-and-run, where I was stuck in traffic and he slid out of control and hit me, then drove away. We saw it coming, but could do nothing about it. In the other incident, two elderly people were killed. Both of these accidents were an example of extreme speed combined with extreme LACK of speed. That is a dangerous combination and far too common in this town. Young drivers need to slow down! You do not want the guilt of killing someone on your conscience, even if they were going too slow!

Just OBEYING the traffic laws would cut down on accidents, let alone slowing down. Apparently, people don't know what YIELD means, as I've almost collided several times by drivers who just rush past the YIELD sign. I'M THE ONE who has had to yield. I admit, us women can be bad drivers, but MEN are the ones who seem not to know what YIELD means.

I know the man that is in the hospital in the ICU and who may not made it out of this horrifying accident alive. NO speeding was not a factor in this accident and racing was not the cause of it. No need to jump to conclusions and bash the families of the people when they are going through such a hard time.

I refuse to argue this any further, people died here, and there is no indication at all that speeding was a factor. You people are trying to turn this into something that it is not, this is news article is not about speeding. This news article is about 2 people who's families have experienced one of the greatest losses one can possibly know.
I will not argue this any further with you imbeciles.
I apologize to those suffering for this news article by people trying to use it to force their agenda. I also apologize for mucking it up trying to help them understand.
You arent going to reach these morons who have been programmed to assume speed causes all accidents. THis is despite the fact that research indicates speed doesn;t cause accidents, DIVERSITY of speed does. SO you dipshits going less than the speed limit in the left lane, or those of you driving side by side so noone can pass, you cause cars to remain at close proximity lowering any margin of error.

I completely 100% agree with you. It's amazing that there are families right now grieving tremendously because of this accident last night and so many think that now is the time to get on their soap box and act like they know exactly what happened. Why can't we just respect the families for now and hope and pray that the person in the hospital gets through this and remain silent until the families have an opportunity to deal with this great tragedy. C'mon people so many have lost their loved ones ,have some compassion!

If you are as impacted by this tragedy as you keep claiming, then keep a civil tongue in your own head and stop the name calling. Take along look in the mirror and make sure that you're not the imbecile you keep calling everyone else.

May the good Lord bless and comfort the families of those that lost their lives last night.

Your excuse for following someone too close is not a valid one. If someone is driving the speed limit in either lane, you should not be following too close or trying to intimidate them to go faster to suit yourself. Back off to a safe distance and chill! You will get there fast enough.

The idea of a fast lane is ridiculous, the left lane of U.S. highway 70 is for passing, not passing because you feel like going 75 in a 65, but passing when someone is going 63 or slowing down in preparation to exit. Just because driving fast may not be a factor in this or all accidents does not mean it is not a factor in any accident. People in this town need to be more patient when driving, leave early if they are always in a hurry. Between the tailgating, speeding, cutting people off, and illegal lane changes, it is a wonder there aren't more accidents like this every day.

I pray that the families that were affected get through this and get all the support they need.

I'm amazed you people consider yourself smart enough to post a comment. I saw the carnage, somebody changed lanes in a blind spot, pushing three cars into oncoming traffic. At 65 mph, and assuming the truck was going the 55 mph posted speed limit there, thats a combined force of 120 mph. Then add mass to the whole thing and no matter the situation the bigger guy will always win. Semi-trucks weigh more than the combined weight of all three other vehicles combined. No wonder there were casualties. The human body can't sustain a crash into what was virtually a solid object at 120 mph. It doesn't matter what the safety features of the vehicles in consideration were, it was just a freak of nature. It sickens me when people who don't take the facts into account automatically assume that just because you are going the posted speed you will be safe. Now grow up, we aren't in high school anymore, and put your ego away. What you should do is write our horrendous rag known as the sun news and tell them how appalled that 4 people died and they don't even have the decency to write something with a tad of effort. Really? Two paragraphs? Anyone who saw the twisted wreckage could have put an entire page down. Don't report the news if you don't really know whats going on.

Now to the pricks that assume there was speed involved: differences in speed are more deadly than like speeds, so if you see a faster car in your mirror, yield. When you think, "Oh, I'll show them by going slow what I think!" you not only put yourself in danger but everyone around you. Driving isn't something to be taken personally. It's a method of transportation. When theres a runner on the sidewalk, you don't think they are endangering you just because you are in competition with the turtle for last place. You don't assume that by blocking them off they will stop running. You know the right thing to do is let them through because in the end, IT DOESN'T MATTER!
