I never disciplined my teenagers. They disciplined themselves. For example, they knew that missing curfew without a acceptable excuse meant restriction to the house for the following weekend.
Therefore, if they missed curfew they themselves "restricted themselves to the house". That was there decision. Not mine. Not society. It was their option and their decision. Responsibility and accountability.

The article doesn't state whether the situation got out of control or not. In Wyoming, I'm sure they handle things quite differently than we do in California. It sounds like the discipline went overboard. Maybe they should just have the kids clean up the cafeteria for a week. Gee, but then the ACLU would say something about that... Mr. Miles, if you don't believe in discipline and your teenagers turned out well then you are a very lucky man.

Luck has absolutely nothing to do with it. Miles probably didn't need to discipline his teenagers because he set a good example to begin with. Good job, guy!

You should discpline yourself, Mr. English Major. "That was THERE decision" should be "That was THEIR decision". This misuse of the word THEIR really annoys me to no end and I see this happen quite often.

The three girls showed poor judgement and I'm glad they were forced to suffer the consequences - and really, 3 days suspension is not harsh!
Those who feel the board over-reacted are probably the same fools who keep driving into an intersection after the light has turned red! The rules were clearly stated just one day before the incident. Why have become a country were accountability is a bad word?
It's time adults stopped "forgiving" youths for bad decisions, because one day, these youths will be adults. And unless they learn consequence today, then they will simply be irresponsible adults - and don't we have enough of those already???

other than suspension, were there any other punishments? I'd have to say, an adult infraction of "firing missles"...seems a bit much for throwing french fries.

majoring in the micro, it seems that we do now.

Hey, the girls had fair warning and chose to challenge authority anyway. They deserved what they got. Why should deliberate, planned rebellion be treated lightly? Crime always starts small and never appears noteworthy until it's out of control. Singapore has the best idea yet ... bring on the caning room for our spoiled kids!

Ok Al, you go right ahead and believe that if you want to. A good parental example is all that is necessary to make sure your kids always do the right thing. Now if all the other parents whose kids hang around yours were all setting those same good examples...

Actions have consequences... period. They were warned and chose to challenge authority.

As for Mr. Miles, it appears he made his expectations clear to his children and laid out the consequences for disobedience and disregard for the rules. Kudos, Mr. Miles! That fact that your children appear to have grown (or are growing) into responsible adults also means you applied your principles consistently.

If all Bubbles can negatively comment on is Mr. Miles' spelling, than apparently you have finally left her speechless. More kudos!

These kids will soon grow into adults and there is nothing worse than spoiled adults with a false sense of entitlement, a total disregard for rules, and no respect for others.

What's next, if you sneeze and a booger comes flying out and hits someone, you could be cited for "hurling missiles".
Rules, Rules, Rules. Nobody can do anything without repercusion, when in the hell are people going to wake up. I remember my days at Aviation High School and some of the food fights we had in the cafeteria. Long live the Falcons.

Once on jury duty 2 issues came up, can a person enter a store (any store, open for shoppers) pick up an item, examine it then return it . Can the person be charged with burglary ? The judge said YES . What is a conceal weapon ? Anything that can cause injury . As to the french fries, its is a real stretch .(which brings up dodge ball, basket ball, baseball, football . missiles flying everywhere. Weeee

FF, I don't disagree with you at all. There are risks that come with any kind of parenting. I guess we were lucky after all. YMMV
What I want to know is were the fries limp or stiff?

I hardly consider three flying french fries a food fight. The article doesn't even say how far apart each of the little missile launchers were form each other. Were they sitting next to or across from the other or was there some distance? How far will a french fry fly? Was it a mutual battle amongst friends? Was race an issue? It would seem to me that while they were warned by a sworn Police Officer about possible consequences that a citation (ticket) for a municipal code violation is not only harsh but a huge stretch of the law. This should have been a school issue only, of which a three day suspension is arguably warranted.

Look out you little rug rats: The day is soon coming that all french fries will be banned under the assault french fry law. All french fries will be issued serial numbers which will be recorded by the lunch ladies upon purchase. There will be a grace period to legally turn in all potatoes and french fries to any School Administrator or Resource Officer assigned to your campus or have them registered. You must undergo a 3 day french fry safety course and wait 30 days to pick up your registered french fries. It will be a felony to own or possess a potato or anything that can be used to manufacture or cook a french fry, including deep vat fryers and micro-wave ovens. OH THE INSANITY OF IT ALL!!!!!

Whats the matter Linda? Can't find enough liberals to protect in Wyoming, that you have to take on a students "Rights" to throw food while in a school cafeteria?

I vote for giving those students a good spanking, but you are probably against that too.

I think some of you are missing the point. Kids need rules. If you let them get away with that one small thing, pretty soon it gets out of control. I'm sure there were some kids in that lunchroom who wouldn't appreciate getting hit with a french fry. Before you know it, there could be fighting, and THEN someone could really get hurt. There are reasons for rules and these kids need to learn to live with them.
