Memorial to slain gay student dedicated in Wyoming

LARAMIE, Wyo. a ' The nation has become more accepting of the gay and lesbian community in the 10 years since a gay University of Wyoming student was murdered, his mother said Saturday.

Slowly, year by year, outrageous crime by outrageous crime, court ruling by court ruling, the bigotry is decreasing. Unfortunately young Shepard was an innocent martyr on the road to change.

I wish his parents well in their efforts to "replace hate with understanding, compassion and acceptance." It is an admirable and worthwhile goal that will help the whole of society.

The crime was horrible but I disagree that Sheppard was a martyr because he was not murdered for being gay. He was beaten to death by a drug-crazed man on a week long drug binge, a man was violent due to drugs. The fact Sheppard was gay had nothing to do with it.

Sounds like you refuse to accept the truth. Again, Matthew Sheppard's murder was a terrible tragedy, but he was not killed because he was gay and is therefore not a martyr, as gays insist.

I read somewhere, the murderer said in an interview that he was always attracted to the criminal lifestyle and only felt bad for his victims mother.Now he's in prison for life.Like my mother used to say,"Anything to get out of working for a living,eh buddy?"

That's an interesting statement. He murdered without feelings of remorse, having no compassion for his victims, yet feels bad for the mothers of his victims. He certainly has a confused mind.
