9/7/2012 Lansing - Former state Senator Phil Arthurhultz is accused of trying to entice two girls near a Lansing middle school as well as two 15-year-old boys, according to a felony complaint.
Parents of Lansing School District students had complained of a man having inappropriate contact with their children, prompting school officials to contact police, according to a report by the Lansing State Journal. The district had issued an alert for employees of two middle schools to be on the lookout for the senator, according to the newspaper.
Arthurhultz, who represented Muskegon County from 1979-1994, was arraigned Tuesday on two counts of conspiracy to entice a female under 16 for immoral purposes, one count of bribing/intimidating/interferi ng with witnesses, one count of gross indecency between males and two counts of accosting children for immoral purposes.
The complaint against Arthurhultz, 63, states he tried on March 28 to entice for immoral purposes a 12-year-old girl and a 14-year-old old girl near Lansing's Otto Middle School, according to the newspaper.
He also is accused of accosting, enticing or soliciting a 15-year-old boy on a Lansing Street on March 25, and of accosting, enticing or soliciting another 15-year-old boy in Arthurhultz's home sometime between July and September of last year, the newspaper reported.
If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison.
Police reportedly are searching for other possible victims.
Arthurhultz rose to prominence as a Republican senator from Whitehall, serving as the majority floor leader. After leaving office in 1994, he moved to Lansing and was appointed to the Michigan Liquor Control Commission, of which he became chairman. He also was a Lansing-area radio talk show host.
He left the Liquor Control Commission in 1998 after the state attorney general launched an investigation into his spending practices while he was on the commission. He later repaid $12,000.
A preliminary hearing on the child sex charges is scheduled for April 21, 2013.
