I have one of the Actiontec routers/modems that they rent out to everyone. Other than the Actiontec and Westell has anyone ever got a Netgear or D-Link brand gateway to work on Highlands DSL? If So please let me know. Also for tweaking the gateways to work better with online gaming like shooters is there anyone that would know the settings to change? Thanks

Hey!
Andy brand router WILL work with highland DSL. I've had a few, and my latest is a higher end ActionTec.

Linksys, D-link, NetGear, they're all good to go.

As for online gaming, the only thing I can think of is to set up port forwarding, which could shave a little time off of your latency.

It would be specific for whatever game you play. Let's say COD4. Find out what Port it uses for LAN gaming. Then on your router, set up port forwarding so that any traffic coming to "xxxx" port goes to "your computer name". That will make the router immediately send that traffic to your PC rather than having to search for what PC to broadcast to. If you torrent, you know exactly what I'm talking about.
This will not matter if your PC is the only one on your LAN.

But to be honest, with the newest games out there, pay for the 1.5mb down, or don't even bother. Just my opinion.

I owned a Netgear and couldnt get it to connect. Any help? If you remember any setting that I should know cause highland WONT give me all the info and wont help me unless I rent their equipment. I will be so glad if Comcast comes I am going to drop Highland so fast. I've had nothing but years of bad service from them.

highland wont help you connect them because all they know about internet is it plugs into a phone line and you can surf on it. Trust me highland is no tech club when it comes to internet or networking....they just guess or let thier provider spirittelecom do the tech work for them

I know its horrible, even spirit telecom dont know and told me that they would have to call me back. I know one thing, first time any other provider comes in no matter who they are me along with thousands of others will follow chase.

I can't speak for this area but when I lived in Oliver Springs I had Comcast internet and cable and it was awesome. Fastest internet I've ever seen. I did have problems with getting a clear picture on cable but I called them and they sent someone right out. The problem was in the wire outside-a squirrel had been chewing on it. Once they replaced that I never had any more problems. That was a little over 2 years ago though so I can speak for their service in more recent times.

Highland is starting to get really bad with stuff like that. They even refuse to let people drop their regular phone service..yet there are people in the county currently who only have DSL and no phone..smells like a huge discrimination suit to me. By the way, all this info and monopoly that highland is pushing has been reported to an organization who probably sometime soon will blow this thing wide open on the open media :)

Ya know I wouldn't be so ticked off at highland if they didn't do everything they could to suck out wallets dry.
19.95 per month for internet then add on the phone bill and DSL bill thats just totally ridiculous.

does anyone else have trouble with your internet connection? I have the actiontec router from highland, and I have had problems with not being able to connect. They are always very helpful when I call, but would I not have this problem if I bought my own router?

Got to admit, HTC is surely taking advantage of having a monoply. Forcing folks to purchase a landline in order to get DSL should be illegal.
Maybe Outdoorsman is right, need someone to expose this crap.

Highland should help you with your connection no matter what router or modum you use because you pay for the sevice to connect to the internet through there company. It shouldn't matter it is the brand they rent or not. I have Bellsouth and they sell you the modum you don't have to rent it and you can use one from walmart if you want and they still help you set it up.

I just signed up for highland's fastest DSL. Its not been installed yet, really hope I don't regret it. And by the way, I did get a landline phone as a package, didn't have to but it was quite a bit cheaper with the phone than without. How crazy is that? Said it could take up to 3 weeks to get it installed.
