You're an idiot, but a fun one!!!! LOL I happen to be an American convert to Islam, and temporarily live in an Amish area of Ohio. My stepfather was Amish, and as I attempt to work out things from the past, I study the Amish some. You are right, there are such similarities between the Amish and Islam, Wallah ! It bothers me that these upstarts stole my religion. LOL

Much peace

LOL love the article!! what is even funnier is many of the practices they do are done by the muslims. We would rathe rsolve our own disputes and we arent sue happy...AND the women in our community don tfall for the tight short skirts and bikinis we cover ou rbodies because they are SPECIAL and not for the average joe to oggle at! and if a beard is unamerican tell that to the thousands of men that arent amish OR muslim that keep beards! oops i guess those country music stars aint american cause they wear beards!!

I, too, find the article amusing.

But please know, the Amish aren't the "quaint", "pious" people many would like to think they are.

As quoted by Ruth Irene Garrett, a woman who left the Amish culture:“It's like any other society. You have great families, very well-balanced, but you also have dysfunctional ones. Take the Amish off the pedestal. They're just like everybody else."

The Bearded guys are not really on a pedestal. If they really are why did they send a hitman after my sister, after she left the community, where she had done no harm to anybody. But do not try to tell them that you know about them sending a hitman after my sis. because, they will tell you with a big beard, a mellow voice, and a charm of a saint, that they are conscientious objectors. That is what they want the world to believe. If they are so mellow, why did they slash my tires when I went to shop at their store. I had to close my business because of an accident, and lost everything I had, and ended up on the street. My Dad refused to help me out with dime one, even after he treated me like a slave, since a very young age, beating daily, yelling, jerking around by ears, kicking etc. The preacher even approached me after my sister left, saying she is going to have to quit telling others about the Amish dark secrets. They will try to tell you that child slavement is only random families, however it is not. I walked in on my neighbor with 12 kids, using a cattle shocker, on his 7 year old kids but for not doing his chores fast enough. I witnessed the cops showing up after a woman called in her man for beating her again, and the man walks out so mellow with this humble voice and big beard, and the cop actually apologized for showing up and left. I watch my sister trying to raise her kids on her own with no outside support because they shun her, and I have to say, that when you see a Dad depriving their kids of education, because he prefers to make money off his family, then turn his back on his kid, when his kid is struggling, you are reminded of what cold hearted cruelty really is. I also watched that very same father refuse to hold his first grandchild,( a baby ), just because that baby was born from somebody that was not Amish anymore. Try to explain that one to their Amish Jesus (which would probably be their church's ordnungs letter).

My sister sometimes says, "Clothes hide so much."

I know what she means. I am frequently amazed at the response by normal America toward people who hide atrocities behind their religious appearances.

Faith is vital and essential but when people don't really have faith and simply hide their evils behind homegrown beards, the children suffer. The courts don't typically find these people and even if they are found they are prosecuted more lightly than non-Amish offenders.

This is discrimination and it is not healthy for the Amish communities. The general perception is that the Amish are the meek and quiet in the land. The general perception does not perceive what happens behind closed doors to women and children in their plain garb, so women have no voice. They are not allowed to divorce or call abuse hotlines.

So glad I'm out!

Reality, Johnny, Formerly Amish:
I so wanted to respond to your anguish but I felt my own values prohibited my saying anything. Yallah ! I can not keep silent. As I said before, my own Stepfather was raised Amish, and horribly beaten and abused. So, when he got children, he passed it on, as is so often the case, so if you have children, think hard and get help if you need to so that you do not make your own children miserable.

For me, this has all led to a long path of self discovery, along with raising a family of my own and being married for 39 years. In the end, my marriage failed, partially due to the issues I carried from the treatment I recieved from my very angry, abusive step father.

In reading about Mandelian Genetics, I learned that so much of my nature was bred into me, and the rest of it was programmed into me by my past, and over the years, it has been extremely difficult to come to a reasonable, charitable sense of self; to which we all have a right.

The above link has helped me so much, but you can not put your whole life into it. So much of our lives is up to each one of us.

For me, it led me to my current faith, but I must hasten to say that mine is a very American version, and I do not put up with nor endorse what sometimes happens abroad.

I wish you much peace in your journey of discovery. May God bless you, and Merry Christmas
