I worked at one of their locations for 2 days. After witnessing some of the ways they handled their clients I was basically appauled by it. (for example: when Area Temp conducts a drug test, they let the people leave the cups of urine sitting in the bathrooms without collecting it. The next person to use the restroom would report this.) I beleive witnessing all this garbage contributed to the reason why I was let go after the 2nd day of employment. I would suggest any one looking for a job, would have to be pretty desperate to let them find you one. They make their money by taking at least a third of what these hard working people should of earned. Im sure they definitely discriminate against race ,sex and age.

Isn't that what a disgruntled employee who got fired after two days would say? Perhaps if you would have done your job and got the urine immediately after the applicant was done you wouldn't have that opinion!

Area Temps is definately a "no brainer!" They do racially profile each and every individual. The blacks get the shit jobs, because they think that they can do no better. The whites are segregated into two categories: Trailer Type- get low paying minimum wage type positions; others - get better postions but still don't make any money.

They post ads every day on Cleveland.com and in the Plain Dealer News. SKILL LEVEL $700 weekly, but when you go in that job had been filled, by whom? Once you leave they still have the same signs up SKILL LEVEL 800 / WKLY (you might even be over qualified for that position, and then they say "It's filled" or that was just an ad posted to attract people in.

Bottom line, think of them as they stuff the street sweeper picks up; and then ask yourself if they are worth it. Don't apply to blind ads, they never have any jobs!

EEOC accuses Area Temps of discrimination
Posted by Teresa Dixon Murray September 29, 2007 07:38AM
A giant in the temporary-staffing industry, Area Temps of Cleveland, violated federal law by matching workers with companies' requests for people of a certain race, age, gender and national origin, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission charged in a lawsuit announced Friday.

The EEOC's class-action lawsuit follows a three-year investigation into Area Temps' practices.

Area Temps also illegally profiled applicants according to their race and other demographic information, the EEOC said. And the government agency charges in its suit that Area Temps illegally fired an employee who helped the EEOC with its investigation and another employee who opposed the company's discriminatory policies.

Area Temps founder and Chief Executive Ray Castelluccio declined to comment on the suit, referring questions to company attorney Tim Ditchey. Ditchey couldn't be reached for comment Friday evening.

"I find it very disturbing that racial profiling of this type is still happening, 40 years after the enactment of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act," EEOC regional attorney Jacqueline McNair said in a written statement. "Discriminatory practices such as this should serve as a reminder to all of us that there is much work to be done in the field of civil rights."

The EEOC accuses Area Temps of violating the federal law that prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, gender or national origin.

The company also violated the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967, the suit said.

Area Temps, founded in 1987, employed nearly 8,000 people in 2005, according to its Web site, making it one of the largest employers in Greater Cleveland.

In some cases, the company failed to assign people for temporary employment because of their race, gender, age or national origin, the suit said. In other cases, it complied with clients' discriminatory requests.

Besides its downtown Cleveland headquarters, Area Temps has offices in North Olmsted, Parma, Mayfield, Mentor, Garfield Heights, Lakewood and Macedonia, according to its Web site.

The EEOC had attempted to reach a voluntary settlement with Area Temps.

The illegal practices date to at least January 2004, the EEOC said.

The suit seeks to change Area Temps' employment practices. It also requests reinstatement or compensation, including back pay and interest, for Kevin Duffy, Ana Lopez and a class of people who applied for jobs at Area Temps or were affected by its practices. Duffy and Lopez were fired because they opposed Area Temps' discriminatory practices, the EEOC said, and Lopez participated in the agency's investigation.

The suit requests compensation for the past and future losses of anyone affected and for their emotional pain, suffering and inconvenience. Any damage amounts would be determined at the trial.

I'm not sure about some of your comments. they found me a job for $18 per hour. i'm a cnc programmer so that is why. those with no skills have a harder time finding work anywhere. the days of mindless labor are gone in America.

I see it again and again. Staffing employers allow or even encourage poor treatment of temporary workers. I don't believe that the practice is based as much on discrimination as just a feeling of complete frustration with the hopeless labor force that is available to them. Temp staffing companies need reliable workers to fill their open positions and serve their clients. Temps have to understand that they are a product for distribution in the same way that a brake-maker distributes brakes to auto supply stores. If the brake pads are all defective, the brake-making company will soon go out of business. Staffing companies are no different. If they supply a temporary employee to a client and that employee does a poor job, the client will fire the staffing company. If this happens enough times, the staffing company will go out of business.
Temporary staffing workers: start pulling your weight and work hard for the wages you earn, no matter how meager they are. Have some pride in the job that you perform. It is up to you to better your situation, not the staffing company for whom you work. That attitude is probably why you ended-up a temp in the first place.
I have never seen a staffing company discriminate on the basis of any criteria except who works hard and who doesn't. White, black, Hispanic, etc. If you do a great job, you will get preferred treatment.

You are so right, they never have any jobs, or so they say. I have a college degree, years of experience, and I work at computer jobs, or administrative assistance work. They called me for a $7.00 job using a cash register. I never used a cash register, and it was not on my resume or application. It was for an early Saturday only job. Everyone I know that has taken their test, filled out their application has never been offered a decent job.

Area Temps are full of BS. They never have the jobs that are posted. They have always been filled, canceled or on hold. What does Area Temps really do? Is this a cover up company?
