I am no fan of Bishop Lennon but I have not heard of him sanctioning "child rape." Prove your statement, please.

No proof, he just wants to make an angry and unsubstantiated comm-box swipe at the Church in general.

I understand the anger though. The closings and mergings of parishes has been painful and unfortunately not always done in a pastoral way.

We had a different experience in our cluster. However, the choices were fairly clear cut. Still painful.

I am glad your experience was better than what others experienced. A lot depended on who was assigned as pastor. We went from one that collaborated with his parishioners to one who has a more "My way or the highway attitude." It hasn't been pretty.

Close them all. Turn the properties into something productive.

Daycare
Homeless shelter
Hair salon
Pet grooming
Shelters for battered women/children
Bed and breakfast
Vocational school

A ton of things can be done with a church. A few should be kept as museums where people can see the savage history of religion.
