another prime example on why alcohol should be illegal....man-made taxable garbage..just like prescription drugs...god forbid somebody wants to smoke a little natural growing marijuana though...thats proven not to be addicting...unlike the 2 above mentioned man-made taxable 'drugs'

If anybody has ever been in a bar fight, this could easily happen to you. It easily could have been the other way around that night. The whole event was a terrible tragedy but the outrage at the judge and the man who served his time in prison (FYI - if you look at similar cases and similar sentences, you will notice that a lot of people only serve half their sentences) is misplaced. However, saying that, I understand that Hockey's family and friends are still grieving his loss but try to think about it from both sides. Honestly was this the first fight Matt Hockey found himself in? It surely was not.

Everyone keeps saying Hockey followed Dykas.....read the court documents, Dykas followed Hockey out of the bar. Dykas said Hockey approached him on the steps, yet the punch occured on the street corner. Dykas said he threw the punch because he felt threatened, yet the court documents state that Hockey's back was turned and that he never broke his fall. To me that sounds like someone who wasn't expecting a hit. You guys can say over and over again that Dykas didn't mean to kill him and I'm sure he didn't. But it doesn't change the fact this his actions lead to Hockey's death and there has to be consequences for that.

Why was there a trial? You used taxpayers money for it and in one fell swoop the judge made a mockery of it. I sincerely think that the judge needs his head examined. Who in their right mind would let a convicted felon sashay out of jail? Judge, you are someday going to have explain to Lord. I sure as hell wouldn't want to be you then.
Just wondering

So if the judge gave him 3 years community control/probation, doesn't that mean he has to stay in Ohio during this time? Where do his fiance and baby live? Michigan?

The court papers I found said: friends. Hockey and
A bar employee noticed that
Hockey was drunk and told him to leave. Hockey left. When Dykas left the
bar, Hockey was still outside, and the two men exchanged words again.
Dykas punched Hockey in the face, and Hockey fell to the ground.

Obviously, his back was not turned if he was hit in the face. Guess Hockey should have went home after he was kicked out of the bar instead of hanging around. Too bad only hindsight is 20/20.

Rosemary...You have resorted to name calling? how old are you? Such mature individuals we have in the great state of Ohio. Others threatening violence hoping for rape and assault in prison. Threats of violence on release, harassing letters to Derricks fiance. Accidents happen everyday and some are just on the wrong side. That's life. Would you be happy with everything if he finished his full sentence? I doubt it. Would you be calling for the judges head? Sounds like the prosecutor blew it if you are so unhappy with the outcome and his release. I got an idea lets be upset with the jury, thats it...lets blame them. They were the ones who handed down a 3yr term with ONLY 6 moths mandatory. And prison? seems like all day gym class that you cant leave. They provide no opportunities to further your life. Its a social networking site for cons full of individuals counting days til release. Nobody cares about rehabiltitation or trying to help these people. These are YOUR prison systems. Maybe you should pull together and change the judicial system? But that would take more effort than being a keyboard critic. Maybe if we're lucky Ohio will fall into Lake Erie.

Welcome home Derrick.

Accident???- there was willful intent to injur. Ever thought if any genuine remose had been shown at the 1st trial that mabye there may have been no jail time at all? You condemm someone for wishing harm on someone and then you wish an entire state to sink?

Nah - The Great Buckeye State will be here and Jim Tressel will still be kicking your football team's rear ends for years to come.

"Although Dykas and one
of the defense witnesses testified that Hockey approached Dykas with his
fists raised, that testimony is in direct conflict with other witness testimony
that Hockey did not have his hands raised. Moreover, Dykas could not
explain how he ended up next to Hockey on the sidewalk when he claimed to
be with his friends on Johnny Malloy’s steps, which supports the inference
that he approached Hockey, as opposed to Hockey’s turning around and
running up to Dykas." Thats copied directly from Dykas's appeal. Hockey was leaving, Dykas followed him. Dykas was looking for a fight.

Early release is insane! You are sentenced for a horrific crime and yet have the option to go back to the court and get released. It's madness! What ever happened to "you do the crime, you do the time"! My heart goes out to the Hockey family!

you people all make me sick. It is unfortunate hockey lost his life, bit it is also unfortunate dykas will live with a scarlet letter attached to him forever. Honestly, who hasn't been in a bar fight? Both parties were wrong here, Fighting is never the answer. That said, it happened. Do you think dykas knew one punch would kill him? Do you think he would have gotten into the fight had he known? What if it were the other way around ?? Both parties had intent to injure, it was a fight. And way to toss football in like it has anything to do with the situation. Sheer ignorance. I hope one day one of you idiots is caught on the wrong side of a shitty situation. Honestly, this is not much different than a car accident where one party passes away.

Dykas did his time, and I am sure there would not have been an early release if it were not justified
