It's a little bit of a yawn since it's only a civil union and not marriage - unless the SCOTUS forces all who have civil unions to change them to marriages - which could happen in June.

Yep, the "8 state solution" just became the "9 state solution".

But then assuming Illinois passes their marriage bill before then, we're back to an "8 state solution" again.

Who ever thought we'd have difficulty keeping track of all the different states working on marriage equality at once!

The next step in Colorado will be getting a referendum on the ballot to repeal their constitutional ban in 2014(barring the 8-9 state solution).

This is not just a yawn. While not marriage, the Colorado Civil Unions bill was crafted by our gay lawmakers and actually contains the word "spouse", which should hopefully cement it as a true everything-but-marriage kind of law. Even in future bills pertaining to marital benefits, without language specifically to include civil unions, the wording of this bill should ensure that any new marital benefits apply to those in a civil union as well.
This was a hard-fought-for bill. I know personally because I live down the street from the Colorado State Capital and have worked with various organizations over the years to help its passage. It almost passed last year, but in the most raucous turn of events, former house speaker McNulty sent the bill to a kill committee. After the last election, the Republicans lost their majority to a landslide victory for Democrats, and then as first order of business, elected the gay rep who sponsored the bill as the house speaker. McNulty actually had to hand over his office to him.

Now with civil unions in place, it might prove easier to get the marriage ban off the constitution.

This also proves the GOPasaurs as liars AGAIN because they all voted against civil unions.

Turns out it's not just about marriage after all. They don't want us to have ANY rights whatsoever.

Gee, just like we said all along. At least they can't put that lie out there anymore.

I would think the libbies would be against it since gay encounters/unions (whatever you want to call that obamanation) is not producing any new tax payers. Next the queers will be taking children away from legitimate parents.

If I understand correctly, one possible outcome from the Supreme Court this June is they can decide that if a state has enacted something identical (or almost identical) to marriage but just called it something else (civil union/domestic partnership) they have to call it marriage because it's the same thing.

Should that happen, Colorado's would have to be upped to marriage - along with others like California, New Jersey, etc.

We already raise children given up by defective straight parents.

Also, we are just as capable of "producing new tax payers" as any heterosexual married couple who use surrogacy or sperm donors for whatever reason.

Amazing, isn't it. How can anyone with a computer not know many gay people choose to reproduce using all of the wide variety of methods open to straight people, as well as adopt the unwanted and discarded children of straight folks?

With around 100,000 kids available for adoption who go without homes every year, the fear mongering that we will start taking their kids becomes even more irrational. But then prejudice doesn't rely on reason.

No worry, turns out there are MORE than enough irresponsible heteros who keep producing kids they don't want to raise.

Put it up for popular vote and see what happens. You know you don't have the majority of people on your side. So enjoy your win knowing most people are not with you.

Actually we DID put it up for a vote in Washington, Maine, & Maryland last year and we WON all three votes.

Hmmm, seems we DID have the majority.

And since Colorado has a constitutional amendment banning same-sex couples from marrying, we likely WILL be putting it up for a popular vote there as well in either 2014 or 2016; unless the SCOTUS overturns all bans before then.

The country is changing rapidly on this issue over the past decade and will only continue as the older anti-gay crowd dies off.

FYI- The MN House committee also passed the marriage bill out of committee; the full House & Senate will likely vote on it in April or May, once the budget is done.

The march to equality continues......

Talk about karma!

The Republican lesiglators bitching that the bill has no religious exemptions are the same ones who had the opportunity last year to pass a bill with extremely broad religious exemptions. They chose not to because it was more important to them to deny ANY recognition whatsoever for same-sex couples.

Yep, karma is a BEYATCH!!!!
