This story is spinning the facts in a "blame the victim" direction. Belen is a quiet residential street. No high school students are around at 5:40 am on a Saturday. Does anyone really think the results would have been any different if the old lady had been in the crosswalk 20 feet away?
What was the driver doing out at that early hour? Was he a construction worker speeding because he was late to work? Was he still up from the night before, buzzed from a night of partying?

It was in front of our house. It was a young man who we've 'heard' was driving the speed limit on his way to work. It was terribly traumatic and deeply saddening tragedy. Absolutly horrible.... For BOTH parties. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved. :*(

The way I read it in the paper was that the pedestrian crossed north of the crosswalk, sounds like she was either going to or from the Rite Aid building. Terrible tragedy, no doubt...that said...not to point fingers, if this is the case then the pedestrian is at fault. I do agree - drivers in that area definitely need to slow down...but in this case the driver was released from scene, so the DUI theory is out the window. Its not really fair to jump to conclusions as to why someone is driving at 0530 on a Saturday morning. Maybe they were going to work, or on vacation. May that poor woman RIP and my heart goes out to the driver who has to live with this forever.
