1 so why in the hell if someone offered you a hit of crack would someone accept,if you said yes and hit it you are a moron and i have no sympathy for you if you end up suckin weiners to support your habit. i see all kinds of overprotective naieve hillbilly parents not talking to their kids about drugs or thinking their kid could not get hooked, and basically supporting them once they are hooked. the real world is comming to rural america.and the hillbillys are not prepared. |

1 What many people who abuse prescription pain killers dont realize, and their families, too, is that there are some cumulative effects that can lead to overdose and to other damage. The stress on your organs, including your heart, to snorting pain pills, and the mixing of drugs, can lead you to a point where one day, even without a pill, your heart cant take it. Of course, how to communicate this is something someone of your sensitivity might be able to ascertain...not. The Buddha said, grow a care, or something like that. |

"people like this are already dead" is a lovely example of social darwinism thought. Under that philosophy we might just as well drug test and shoot the unauthorized positives. I understand that "I know" is making a distinction in the last sentence by describing persons as "real addict," but I dont that distinction holds up. I cant believe either of the young women in this case wanted to die.
Usually, I say I dont know these people, but in this case I will admit that I had casual contact with both families, the Shays and the Kissicks.(It is a small town and our circles intersected) I have also known some other people who had pill problems and died, not from an OD, but from cumulative damage to organs. None of these deaths were sought out, so the "I know" position is not correct in these cases. The problem with pill abuse is the big pharma corporate machine using a distribution system of their pain meds that generates money and that is all they care about. Pain is a common experience that needs treatment, but this system is broken in a lot of places. One place is the street where these pills are resold, but others can be found and one is the source...big pharma. Good education about the cumulative effect might also help and could address the issue of choice that both fat steve and I know are talking about. But I will again state, love is the answer. So I hope the two of you will forgive me when I say your social darwinism attitude is harsh and doesnt help solve the problem. The Buddha said, we are all in this together, or something like that. |

well, anyone drawn into the addictions can do and say things they would never normally do or say, obviously... but it's sad still that people lose there lives to it... but the above statement that they are pretty much dead but haven't fell over yet, in some ways may be true... I just believe that people took you the wrong way... I just want to ask... were you talking about, for example, that they are not themselves, or were you trying to say that they should just be given up on because they are lost causes? In that case, everyone has a different situation because it varies with the person doing it... some people can get caught up in drugs easily and some people actually have the will power to overlook it. Fortunately, I've been one of the very few who looks at pills as though they are a disease... unfortunately there are family and friends who are addicted and look at it differently... it's sad and they should be prayed for...

1 Education is great, learning is truly the answer. These people do not want to learn. They want a pill they are addicted. I have tried to reason with many of them and I have spent thousands of dollars of my own money trying to help. I can honestly say that I have never saw a truly addicted person cured of their addiction. They may not do a certain something, but they will be doing something else. I am not being critical of these people, but I do know that for the most part they do not want to be in their condition. Death wheather accidental or intentional in many ways is a blessing. |

1 Never once did I imply that they should be given up on. Bad thing is, they have given up on themselves. |

1 They have been told they are worthless and should just give up. This is part of the problems. some of these kids have been shuffled around all their lives trying to find some kind of meaning and they don't find it in capitalistic endeavors. Capitalism=Republicanism/Conse rvativism=Social Darwinism. Only the strong survive and this is what we have taught our children. These kids were told that having more and living life in the fast lane is the American Dream. When they get sucked in with the pills, the real capitalists take over and enslave them and we blame the pill takers and not the pill makers as myft suggests. These pills like oxycontin and meth actually change the brain chemistry, sometimes after the first try. This becomes not only psychological dependence but physical as well. These kids and families need serious spiritual and physical help, they don't need more indoctrination into the social darwinistic theory with comments like, "they want it, they deserve it or it's their fault". It is all our faults. |

1 So... When is enough, enough? How many chances do we give these drug addicts to ruin other lives before we put an end to theirs? Now, I am not in favor of testing for pills and just killing the positives like cattle. But I think the penalties need to be much harsher and much much longer. For the users anyway. I say give them a few chances, 2 to be precise, to amend and be a more valuable member of society. Of course this involves drug rehabilitation (mandatory) and light job training while there. To function in society they need some basic tools after all. But if they go through this, say twice, and fail or at least prove without a doubt they will not or cannot be rehabilitated, they need to be executed. Please, keep in mind I am presenting this without religious morals (or maybe morals in general) clouding our judgment. At some point we need to stand up as a whole community and put this out before it drags everything under. And before anyone throws out "You have to have lived or known someone on drugs to know what its like" well I have. Many people. Good friends and family. I have had friends for years knocking on my door at 4am to borrow money for an 80. I have had them offer their girlfriends or themselves for money. I have had great friends pick items up and pocket them from my house. My car was broken into and I found the cds and items stolen at another friends house. I have moved, changed my number, and had some of the best friends of my life arrested. All because of pills. I have had a brother go in and out of rehab for years. And everytime he is out, he gets a fix and is back to it. Stealing and dealing. Its past time we took a harder view on the pillhead culture out there. I know many of them are mothers, fathers, sisters, brothe rs,sons,daughters...etc etc....but for some, its just a lost cause. I am sure, since this is topix, I will be blasted on here for such a view but I have read others views (Graysons esp) and I know I am not alone out there. |

1 We should strive to help the helpless not condemn them lest it someday be us: When the Nazis came for the communists, I remained silent; I was not a communist. Then they locked up the social democrats, I remained silent; I was not a social democrat. Then they came for the trade unionists, I did not protest; I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, I did not speak out; I was not a Jew. When they came for me, there was no one left to speak out for me. |

Where did I say anything similar to that?
I said give them a few chances. Then kill them. If you can't get it right after say, 2 years of rehab and therapy, I doubt your really going to be a good, productive member of society. Since I am not a Christian, I thankfully can view things with a more logical approach. Without morals or a conscience troubling me over rights and wrongs. |

You can say you are not moral but you seem to have the same morality that allowed Hitler to exterminate those he felt worthless to society. Is that a different set of moral or no morals at all? Hitler gave them a few chances too, but the vast majority could not live up to his demonic standards of living. And the thing about living with no morals ONLY works when YOU are not the one being exterminated. When it suddenly comes to you or your family, such as drug addiction, I doubt you will hold the same amoral attitude.
