I hope others will come forward with positive and thoughtful ideas they may share, for adding new jobs, new kinds of business, how the local government leaders can help bring them to bare. Many minds are better then just a few, when it comes to finding answers to problems. There are enough folks who love the Lake, and hope that it can find a path to better times. If just one idea, finds others, who believe in it, it would be great.

Once again, I would like to propose the following use for the CASTLE. With help from the local government, via tax holiday, etc, and combining a Artisan Baking School with a for profit Local Bread Company, as a positive use for this site.

The school would make use of the rooms for its students, which would bring outside funds to the economy, from fee’s for classes, purchase of local goods, gas, entertainment, etc, and more from family and friends who would visit them. Along with the budding wine industry, local kids could gain training to stay and work in there home towns, in the food industry. Wine tasting rooms could offer the Artisan Breads and High Quality Pastries in their outlets.

Secondly, due to the on going high cost of shipping, a quality bread baking company, who’s customer base would be all the towns around the lake, grocery stores restaurants, even fast food outlets, would have a customer base large enough to be very profitable, having less cost for shipping their products to the market place. Labeling of products could advertise Lake County, and its communities, such as Upper Lake Whole Wheat, The Oak Old World Rye, etc.
Tourist would take these products home and others would see them. The graphics on the packaging would fall into - A picture is worth a 1000 words bracket.

This would add year round jobs, for production center help, delivery service, janitorial, housekeeping, teachers, management, administration, vehicle upkeep, etc.

The school would also attract both local and tourist to a on site retail sales unit for the goods the students produce. Sales of supplies to the school and bakery could gain more local business income. Advertising fees for resorts and other business could be gained from ads on packaging and delivery trucks. Local events could be promoted the same way.

Using some pork from D.C. and the State, to run a road up Borax Lake road that would cut into the mountain side or over it, engineers would know what would be best, to the point off Fruit Island and build a bridge over to where the golf course is at Buckingham, and improve the widen the Soda Bay road into Lakeport, would bring huge job growth, as well as lower the cost of transportation between the two major communities.

A feeder road would from Sulfur Bank Mine road, to met that road would also lower the cost to locals to visit those communities. It would free up the traffic alone Hwy 20, which then could be used as more of a scenic route, with well place look out areas, with restrooms, for tourist and locals to visit and enjoy the views.

The bridge could be designed to be low profile, and allow for a place that could open in low traffic times to allow large or sail boats to pass through. The lowering of the cost to travel around the lake would be such that a small toll could be charged to help the county maintain it, alone with future retail businesses that would open along the path of the roadway.

Clearlake Oaks Keys could be revitalized, as to bringing up sales and value to the homes their, if the property owners just got together and put in those improvements to make it a GATED COMMUNITY. A no brainer if you think about it.

In the midwest and southern states, CATFISH FARMS, have proven to be very successful. Lake County would be a perfect place to start one, weather, water, location wise. Its a renewable natural resourse, offers local feeder business's, such as fish fry festival's, competiton between towns for the best, fishing derby's, great advertising for the Lake as a whole with graphic and copy on packaging. It offers a new area of employment, adds to the tax rolls. Local government could work with a developer, offering a tax holiday for a start up.

Cottage industries, such as baked goods, homemade jams and jellies, craft items. Road side veggie and egg stands. While small, all would add income to families, with low start up investments. Customer base would be for locals and tourists.

County could purchase small passenger vans, and lease them out, with protected base territories, to independent contractors, who would pay for all expenses in operating community and town to town transportation for the county. Contractors would charge a fee for riders. County might gain some funding from other state and fed programs.

A tourist attraction, BEAR MOUNTAIN, feeding off the draw and enjoyment of folks and bears. Inventory would be gained from taking some bad bears from state and fed parks, building a underground housing unit, topped by a man made mountain (small), that was enclosed by a ring of water and wall, that allowed visitors to walk on wooden walk ways above the bears and have seating for those who would enjoy just watching them do there think. Display area could be design to house other like animals, such as raccoons, possums, foxes, etc. Would add jobs, taxes for County, use road kill as part of food supply. Snack bar profits, wine tasting room for local wineries, admission fee's, business for vets, gift shop for bear related inventory.

Gourmet WINE VINEGAR MANUFACTURE, using local raw, renewable materials. Packaging would promote the Lake, with copy and Graphics, add new type of jobs, add to the tax roll. Customer base would be wholesale grocery companies, tourist and local sales. Non polluting type of business. Could start small and grow.

Frank Carini suggests a up scale boat harbor with shops, pub, eateries, at the old Lakeport site. A great use for the public, tourist, and high end boat owners.

all you gotta do is somehow straighten or replace h 29 from napa to lake counties. i was born and raised in napa and the bigest problem most people have with going to lake county is that "twisty dangerous road" the southern gateway is very important for lake county development.but its a double edge sword.i moved from napa to lake countie because of improvments to the roads leading to napa, it used to be real hard to navigate from the south.in my opinion it ruined napa forever so be carefull what you hope for.

Wow Jim, have you had too much caffiene today? LOL. You have great ideas! How about a Lake Co. Day Tour Bus that takes tourist around the lake, wineries, restaurants, parks etc.

Love Granzella's, always stop in when drivng through, eat & bring gifts home for friends, we could have something equally as great.

Awhile back a few us were tossing around the idea of a weekly Flea Market. Could include a Farmers Market, baked goods from that bakery you were speaking of (liked that idea, we need a really good bakery in LC).

How about a Kayak Tour service of the lake?

Would be nice for families to have Miniature Golf
again.

For those who want to challenge themselves, a Basic Training fitness group outdoors. Could have beginning, intermediate, & advanced classes.

We need more social groups for tweens and teens. Include learning and fun.

I believe that a lot of folks in the county, like yourself, have great idea's too. They just need to cut loose with them. Every idea can be refined with more good ideas, skills, experience, etc.

Java's idea to bring back miniature golf is do able, as Julies’ is still there, and if they offered tournaments, and team play like they did with bowling, with kid, adult, school leagues. The old game room here would be great for a teen center, with dances, etc.

Not sure if the high schools have an auto shop anymore, but if they do, fund each school parts need to build hot rods or rat rods and allow parents to come in the evenings to help do so. When done, a winning schools team players, get an award for their school, and a dinner at a fine restaurant. The school then could sell the rods on Ebay and put the funds back into school programs. Would help bond parents and kids, bring a degree of pride to the schools, and lower the costs of operating the schools in general. The same could be done with boats. Its a win win thing, as these items would not have the labor cost in building them, thus, the starting bid would be based on what the schools had funds invested in them, which would be far below the market value of rods that were trying to recover there labor costs. They could even build the types of cars used at the race way, to be sold to those who would like to race them in Lakeport.
