Proof positive that talking on cel phones in dangerous situations is not only distracting, it can be deadly. While my heart aches for her family...HOW could she have been so stupid?

This is one of those: There has got to be more to the story kind of things. What could she have been talking about that could have distracted her to the point of ignoring the danger around her? Suicide? Intoxication? Mental illiness? This defies any other logical explaination. What a tragic waste of human life.

I absolutely agree.. otherwise, why would someone cross railroad tracks without even paying attention or looking both ways. If you've got any practical common sense you know better than to blindly step in the potential path of an amtrak. Seriously... so very preventable.

Besides, what's with all these stupid kids playing around the train tracks lately?? Wasn't it just recently a college student got killed after jumping on top of one. I'm sorry to be so blunt.. but these tragedies are the result of utter ignorance.

Contrary to popular belief, talking on your cell phone is very distracting for many people. You can become so enthralled with the conversation, that you are oblivious to what is going on around you. I have seen people driving at aa normal speed...then they start slowing down to a crawl...you pass them (if you can) and low an behold there is a phone to their ear. I have spoken with many people who have confessed "not remembering getting from point A to point B while talking on their cell phone" and driving the car. You'd have to be deaf, dumb and blind not to realize that cell phone use is a major distraction.

The same kind of distractions that you see every time you get into a car and "try" to drive down the road, from Point A to Point B, without killing yourself. Drivers with cell phone in one hand, eating/putting on makeup with the other hand, cigarette hanging out of the mouth, driving with their knees, balancing their checkbook, reading the newspaper, drinking coffee, music blasting out other sounds around them, etc. Probably the case here. I think cell phones, Ipods, and other headsets, after a while, damage the nerve cells in your ears. Or due to force of habit from competing sounds, you become immune to what you should be paying attention to in your environment.(Of course, we all know we can't take two steps without calling someone over silly stuff that can wait until you get home). It does sound odd that she couldn't hear a train, but who knows?

I feel badly for the young woman. This is a terrible waste of potential and will be very hard on her family

Cell phones are a hazard if not used responsibly. I do not think it should be legal to drive when talking on a cell phone or in situations like this. People need to use more common sense with cell phones and not use them if they are in a situation where they need to be at full attention. My husband swears he can "do 2 things at once" e.g. talk on his cell phone and drive but how can you be at 100% attention if you are busy talking to someone and driving, walking close to RR tracks, whatever the situation is??
